Bill Shankly used to be a one‑man public relations industry on behalf of Liverpool FC, before the term had been properly recognised. The present crass campaign lacks his magic touch.

Always amuses and amazes me when Shankly is credited with being some kind of sage/PR genius.

He was a snide who ran a prison camp for his players but took shovel fulls of shit from his lord and masters in the Liverpool boardroom.

His words of wisdom amount to a woeful and distasteful statement about football and life and death, and a comment about 'the socialism that I believe in...etc' - and his version of socialism was to treat people like rubbish unless they did things for him and he was at the top of the heap being feted for being the big I am.

He died a blue like, but that's about the only decent thing you can say about him.

True, but that lot lapped it all up which is perhaps what Wilson was on about. You could say the same sort of thing about Benitez as well (though of course Rafael benefitted from the internet cult).
