ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC"

Not open for further replies.
i thought "we come not to play" was a pisstake because of their anti-football stance, but their actual motto is "we come to play"? what the hell does that even mean then?

i know they're a cult, but they're still following an actual sport like.

It is "we come not to play" - which is probably taken to mean "we mean business, we're not messing". Still "Rise Up" seemed quite apt for a team languishing in 7th place after last season and indeed "all of us are Red(sh...)" is also just about right.

Premier League data since 2005-06 - Penalties Scored, Red Card (and 2nd yellow) Some "witch hunt" eh?

(LFC first)
05-06: 4-1; 5-11
06-07: 6-0; 0-2
07-08: 3-3; 1-2
08-09: 5-1; 0-9
09-10: 3-1; ?-?
10-11: 6-6; ?-?
11-12: 1-3; 3-2
12-13 5-4; 2-2
13-14 10-3; 0-4

Assumed to be accurate data source (Wiki):

Total Penalty For: 43
Total Penalty Against: 22

Red Card For: 11
Red Card Against: 32

LFC Benefit from Penalty/Oppo Red Card: 75 Oppos Benefit from same: 33 (69.4% to LFC) - Note that circa 67% is 3 SD from the Mean (i.e. 50%) so statistically this is well outside the bounds of expectation. You could also conduct an interesting test on the percentage of European games where LFC have had the benefit of a home tie in the 2nd leg (before seedings gave the benefit to the team which had finished higher in the group stage) - this is also remarkably well outside the bounds of the expected results - well into the low 70%.

Twice as likely to score from a penalty as oppos. Oppos three times as likely to suffer a player dismissal.

As much as liverpool do command praise for being top of the league and title contenders surely some of the less arsehole fans can agree with this.

1. They are lucky that 5 teams that finished higher than them last season all changed managers and therefore weakened all of the teams above for them to break through. The first time this has ever happened in the premier league era and fair enough they have taken advantage. but end of the day = Luck.

2. They keep getting penalties. I do think they play ofr them sometime and some of them are dodgy but for the fact they keep getting them, 12 in total so far that is a stupid amount of penalties to get. The majority of the league have had 4 all season or less. they have 12, that is luck in itself.

3. suarez has came good for them. He has a talent lets be honest and is probably one of the main reasons they are up there. But every other year he has been banned and missed some sitters for them ,only this season he hasnt, lucky for them again.

4. Lucky that all of their major signings have all fitted into the team at the same time. This is major luck, not even the best teams get that sort of record, to have all their best players and signings all work as the one unit without hiccups. Credit to Rogers sure but still, that level of compatibility is lucky considering on paper the likes of sturridge does not play well with Suarez.

5. Results are going their way. Luck in itself, when chelsea are dropping points to palace, that is another bit of extreme luck for them. that is how they will win the leaguem, beating them two at home and them dropping needless (or getting outplayed at goodison) points to open up that 1 point gap they need on the final day.

Call me bitter all you want but is any of that not true?
There is a much simpler explanation. Rodgers is [Poor language removed] boss.

It isn't the fact that they get more penalties. A lot of them were bona fide spot kicks. It's just that other teams don't get penalties at the same rate. Their appeals are turned down - considered 'ball to hand', a 'coming together' or 'simulation'. In that way it is NOT a level playing field.

The plethora of penalties and the red card situation is proof enough that death threats work and the FA are terrified of them.

Spot on.

How many times this season do you think any of their plaiyers should have had a red card? Not disagreeing but you should probably quote specific examples rather than throwing out random accusations

They have now made it the norm to go to ground as soon as an opposing player touches you.

So much for the British physical game, they have become south American style diving, hand waving whimpering cheats in less than 2 seasons.

It's disgusting to watch

Whilst I'll accept he's hit on a great formula, I honestly think it's far too early to come to that conclusion. Tactically he was out of his depth last year and this year he's hit on a kick and rush formula that will fall on its arse the moment Luis Suarez is injured. Or Gerrard for that matter.

I'd save the joy until you have a more longitudinal analysis period. You're essentially grabbing the lowest hanging fruit tactically and it's currently working, but you could easily slump and lose game after game if sides figure you out or you get one injury.

hi there.
challenge accepted.
these here are all of Rodger's signings since his appointment.

Some decent players here right?
Who of them are first team regulars: Sturridge, Coutinho, Mignolet
Which of them feature on rotation: Allen, Toure, Cissokho, Sakho
Which of them sometimes feature: Aspas, Moses
The others are either on loan or don't feature etc etc etc
So having spent 95,7 million pounds for 3 starters?
We simply can not attribute their success to their player recruitment strategy, if theres any strategy at all.
Ironically this almost enhances Rodgers' reputation as a coach- because he hasn't strengthened the team externally so much as improved the rubbish that Hodgson/Dalglish brought in.
But ya. They spend an inordinate amount of money on terrible players.

Ahh but most of those are squad players at best. How many loaned out? How many sold in the last 2 years?

My point is on any given day sturridge, counthino, both play perfectly with suarez despite on paper, suarez droppping back into counthino's space, wanting to finish chances in sturridges space. However fair enough they all click and look where they are because of it.

Liverpool have spent 2 years reducing the wage bill hence all the poor players they have signed. They are all cheap in the modern market and low wages.

the only and i mean ONLY reason why they are offering suarez so much money is because by selling him he could command that wage elsewhere. So therefore offering to pay him that when they get into the champs league is their way of keeping hold of their best player.

Here's a thought, whats worse? Liverpool winning the title, or liverpool winning the title because of Suarez?
