Actually there has been - during the Saxon invasion there appears to have been a massive number of deaths (especially of British males), which was almost certainly down to human action.

However if its just oppression that is being considered, then dont forget that for almost all of recorded British history the poorest members of society (which was of course most people) had to live under some quite astonishingly bad conditions that were usually deliberately imposed from above - this resulted in life . It really is not until after the end of WW2 that society started to treat most of its citizens with anything like humanity.

The evdence of 'anglo-saxon wipeout' isn't persuasive. The evidence tends to support a theory of integration between Celtic/Scando/Germanic populations.

Not in itself, no. But then, what is? As I've said before, Racism is a force which acts almost imperceptibly to oppress non-white people in Western society. It isn't just name calling or violent attacks. That's the visible stuff.

But if someone calls me a "white [Poor language removed]" I might be upset or shaken or whatever but it has no bearing on my position in society. I can laugh it off and get on with my life just like you can, Nik. It wouldn't be so easy for you to dismiss it as summat and nowt if you were black, though, because the fact is that black people are subconsciously (as well as consciously) discriminated against on a societal level in western culture. Why else, for example, do they earn less money than white people on average? Why are unemployment rates higher amongst black people than white. Maybe they're not as clever, or maybe it's because they're lazy. Or could it be something else....?

The majority of the black population came over to the UK in the 60s, basically to fill the jobs and skills gaps we had then. Not exactly sold into slavery. There is no doubt that society then was far more racist then, almost on a casual basis, which continued into the 70s, but these days, the situation is totally different, to such an extent that it sometimes feels that some people can be a bit "precious" about being offended.

To illustrate the point, way back when, the Romans enslaved the Anglo Saxons. Does not bother me, and I do not want an apology from the Italian government.

Also, it should be remembered, that although our involvement in the slave trade was abhorrent, we were the first country to abolish it about 200 years ago.
