I had a taxi back from the airport last weekend. Taxi driver was a red, I asked him his expectations for the season, prompting with happy to make sure you consolidate top 4 and get to after Christmas in the Champions League or would you prioritise a trophy? (which to be fair a lot of mates of mine who are reds have said they'd happily take this season). His response was astounding.
"I expect us to win it to be honest mate, the way we finished the season last year, can't see why we won't this year. As for the Champions League, get the right draw, can't see why we won't win that as well." I mentioned the loss of Suarez and he dismissed it out of hand with "Liverpool have always lost players in the past and it's never stopped us before, I can't see it making any difference." Went on to say his mates had similar expectations and he couldn't believe how long their odds for the title were.
Now I appreciate that all clubs have some delusional fans, but for me that was above and beyond, not to hope, but to expect to do the premiership and champions league double. The mind boggles.
I honestly don't think it's bias, or blue tinted specs on my part when I say I think of this season's title race as Man City vs. Chelsea (with the latter heavy favourites, could be a over by April season), Arsenal could go either way with a half-hearted challenge (and then comfortably taking 3rd) or a fight for Champions League places with us, Liverpool, Man U and Tottenham where 3rd and 4th are up for grabs.
