I think their a nap to go on a big run in europe this season, they will be crying it in from the start '10 years since Istanbul' and all that nonsense, im going to put £10 on them to soften the blow

It wouldn't even soften the blow.

And afterwards you would feel like Judas did about his thirty pieces of silver....:pint2:

...yep, and I think Utd have come unstuck in easy looking groups. For some reason, though, the reds invariably play well in Europe. Different team, different players but a know how. They have the draw they want but lets just concentrate on ourselves.
How many players on that team were even there the last time they were in CL?

I see those lovable rogues think their name is on the trophy already. The motivational bed spreads will be out again in force. They've learnt nothing from last year (thankfully)

If they aren't pipped in the groups by Basel (Real are obvious group winners) they'll be out at the last 16 anyway.
Well, yes, on paper - absolutely - but you forget the dubious penalties, sloppy defending plus of course the obviously helpful draw.

Ludo home first, Basel home in 2nd leg of that tie, Real Madrid out the way with 2 games to go - home leg first giving them a potential leg-up, finish with Basel home and Ludo away.. so basically they even won the lottery for the match arrangements.

F ME they've even had the last 2 games switched (obviously Ludo and the weather or whatever excuse they've given them to have a home game last)...

2nd legs at home (naturally) - I did some research on the number of home 2nd legs they have been given (as opposed to earned by the vagaries of the draw) - it was somewhere well north of 65% which means they are 3 SD from the mean - a remarkable statistic given the very high number of games they have played in Europe over the years.

Last 16: No doubt, assuming they do finish 2nd to Real Madrid - they'll get a nice soft draw (Benfica perhaps or Shaktar say) - maybe Arsenal in the quarters and there you go - sail into the semi-finals, fluke their way past Chelsea...

...I think its 5 years since they were last in, might only be Gerrard. Just heard on the radio that their winner when they beat R Madrid in the Bernabau was scored by Yossi Benayoun.

I remember that, was one of the worst Madrid sides in living memory. Think the midfield that night was Gago and Granero of QPR fame. It was that team that kicked off their mega splurge in the market. Won't be so easy this time around.
