Theo Walcott
Shaun Wright-Phillips
Kieron Dyer
Aaron Lennon
These young speedsters looked really exciting on the ball, scored and assisted some very nice goals. Walcott particularly was ultra-lauded. Got a hat-trick vs Croatia, I believe.
Sterling's hype reminds me of the hype which surrounded those lads.
It's not their fault the media and blinkered fans think they're world-class before they've had time to really develop. Probably stunted their game more than anything. Not sure Brendan Rogers is the right man to manage a potential talent like Sterling, either. Rather someone who focusses on nuances of the game rather than a blood-n-rush philosophy. Problem with the latter for speedsters is once you lose your pace, your manager hasn't given you any prep for how to adapt your game. It was Michael Owen's downfall too, tho' he had an excellent career still, to be fair.
For the counter-example, see Ryan Giggs. Lost his pace, as speedsters do (unless you're a bald dutchman), but adapted his game successfully as he had a manager who was hyper-aware.
