'When Sunderland visited Liverpool last season Gus Poyet created consternation on Merseyside by suggesting that, without Luis Suárez, Brendan Rodgers’ side would be mid-table rather than title contenders.
As he prepared to take his team back to Anfield on Saturday Poyet returned to the subject and an opinion which has appeared increasingly sensible since the Uruguay striker’s departure for Barcelona. “People were very upset with me last year when I said that,” said Poyet. “A few hate me. But I was not going against Liverpool and Steven Gerrard, who is one of the icons of English football, it’s just that I knew how good Luis is. He’s so good he makes a difference. It’s the same with Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo or Sergio Agüero.”
Come on Sunderland. Put the RS in their rightful mid table place.
"We can't always rely on him. It can't be up to him every single game to be the catalyst." Rodgers said.
