ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC"

To be fair that was genius. the fact that it was against chile Was it?) meant they immediatly get psyced out by the fact he would do that and therefore some doubt enters the minds of the players about why Krul has came onto the pitch simply for pens.

And it worked.

It wasn't genius. You're only saying that because The Netherlands won. Krul saved a few penalties. Means the other goalie could just as easily have saved them. If Chile had ballooned the whole lot I might be inclined to think the psyche had worked.

A penalty shoot-out has too few variables to suggest a change of keeper really had any impact (though tbh, Krul's rather unsportsmanlike sledging probably had more of an effect than the substitution).

It is still psycological though. if you are from chile and arent clued up on the dutch players then them bringing a back up keeper with the sole purpose of saving penalties will make you a little bit nervous that the lad is quite good at it. Whether it worked or not on the night is irelavant, another country like germany might have been just blasting them top corner anyway where chile player have a little bit of doubt and second guess themselves on the notion the new keeper is unbeatable.

I get what you're saying, but imagine if Krul had a bout of the spaghetti wrists (which I believe was a criticism of the first choice keeper), then everyone would be right on LVGs back about why he chose to change the keeper at such a critical moment.

Smacked of arrogance over any other tactical decision (this could perhaps come down to me really rooting for Chile at the time also!)

Completely true. There was a risk involved but sometimes a manager has to take a risk to be successful. You arent remembered for getting something wrong 20 years from now but you certainly will be remembered for the time he swapped keepers to win a shootout.

Do you think he will be remembered for this in 20 years?

I'd forgotten until I saw it mentioned on this thread.

I know Arsenal and in particular, Wenger too well to know that unless something big happens to Liverpool like a Sterling injury, we will definitely not win at Anfield, simply is not going to happen. Consistently bottle the big away games under Wenger and it's set to continue. Don't even think about betting on an Arsenal win.

I was also rooting for Chile. I also found Van Gaal's Holland extremely boring to watch.

But tactically, LVG got some excellent results out of, on paper, a pretty poor bunch of Holland players compared to some of the teams in the past.

I disagree here mate. Can see you winning on Sunday. Weakest Liverpool team, mentally and technically, I've witnessed for a very long time. We didn't really get out of 2nd gear on Sunday and still smashed them.

No Sturridge. No Suarez. Gerrard is pants now. Skrtel and Lovren are a joke. Then they've got a Championship level GK in Brad Jones.

Liverpool 0 - 2 Arsenal
