Brendan Rodgers has warned Raheem Sterling’s advisors that Liverpool will not be held to ransom over a new contract and fears an excessive salary could jeopardise the player’s future.

The Liverpool manager claimed Sterling has been offered “an incredible deal” for a 20-year-old, one that rewards his development into the team’s finest player this season, and gave the clearest illustration so far that the protracted contract saga stems from a failure to agree terms with the forward’s agent, Aidy Ward. Ward is currently in the process of leaving Impact Sports Management to start his own company but, while that has complicated finalising a deal, Rodgers stressed Liverpool will not bow to the demands of any player.

Sterling is under contract at Anfield until 2017 and has yet to sign a new deal despite negotiations opening in October. Club captain Steven Gerrard last week urged Liverpool to agree terms with both Sterling and Jordan Henderson “before it is too late”, with the vice-captain’s current deal due to expire in 2016. And Rodgers commented: “Steven is relaying a message that the club obviously wants as well. Both players are very, very important for the future and the club recognise that and I only hope as the manager that it will be resolved very soon.

“What the club has offered (Sterling) is an incredible deal for a young player. I have spoken to Raheem a number of times. He is very happy here and you see that in his game. What he has been granted at this football club is an opportunity. We see that with lots of young players they are getting the opportunity to play here and they get rewarded for that.

“But we are certainly not a club that is going to give out way way above what a player is worth at a certain time of his career. It is not a case of giving any player, and I am talking generally here rather than just Raheem, what they want. We want to reward our best talents, they are a big part of our future and we are confident that will all be hand and resolved soon.”
Popped into RAWK to see how this was going down but not a mention that I could see

@Eggs, agree with you that Lucas playing in the team has been a big part of their recent improvement in form, think they are going to really miss him if this injury is true.

http://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/feb/09/lucas-leiva-liverpool-thigh-injury
Lucas Leiva is to undergo a scan on a thigh injury on Monday amid concerns at Liverpool that the influential midfielder could be sidelined for at least one month. The Brazilian was replaced by Joe Allen in the 16th minute of Saturday’s Merseyside derby at Everton after suffering another thigh problem.

Lucas had missed the FA Cup replay win at Bolton Wanderers last Wednesday with a similar injury and was risked at Goodison Park despite not being 100% fit and being unable to train. He could now miss a demanding period of Liverpool’s season should scans confirm the club’s fears on the extent of the injury.

Saturday’s strain is in a similar area to the injury that forced Lucas to miss the FA Cup tie but believed to be a fresh problem. He would miss Premier League games against Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton and Manchester City if ruled out for four weeks plus the Europa League meeting with Besiktas.

Lucas has played a crucial role in Liverpool’s impressive improvement since November and in the 3-4-2-1 system employed by manager Brendan Rodgers. Liverpool last lost a league game that the midfielder started on 20 September, away at West Ham United.

....cheers LL, that could be a big blow for them. Lucas has gone from zero to hero since they started playing him in that deeper position, be interesting how they plug the gap. If they drop Slippy Steve back it will surely make them more vulnerable so it might be a case of Going with Joe Allen.

.....signs of discontent. The reds talking hard ball but the player holds all the aces, wouldn't be surprised if the player gets what he wants otherwise he could eventually go for nothing. What a time to be a top player in demand.

Guess with Kolo Toure coming back from the AFCON they could use him as the third CB and move Can forward into the DM position. Even Rodgers doesn't seem a fan anymore of Gerrard in the "quarterback" role he lauded him for last year.

He's got them by the balls and the more Rodgers tells the world he's a superstar the more his agents see ££££'s, quite funny really. The one player who Rodgers may actually have a claim on how he's had a hand in his development could be driven away from the club because of Rodgers own ego getting the better of him when he runs his mouth off!

....it's ok saying it's a fantastic deal for a 20 year old but he can justifiably say age isn't a factor, "I'm the best player at the club and should be the highest paid". He must look at big purchases like Lallana, Sakho and Lovren and feel he should be on more than them.

Wonder if Mourinho will bid for him, they do need more English players. He might do it for devilment alone ;)

...there'll be no shortage of suitors. His contract isn't up until 2017 so I suppose the pressure isn't truly on, it's whether the player wants to sit on his relatively small contract for a couple more seasons, short term pain for long term gain. The Henderson one is interesting, surely he's been in talks for a while if his contract is up next year. He mustn't be happy with what's on offer. Could be ego at play, get the impression he sees himself as the new Mr Liverpool after Slippy moves so he probably wants £100k.

Dr Waffle said (about Rip Van Raheem)
"But we are certainly not a club who are going to give out way, way above what a player is worth at a certain time in a career.

"It is not a case of giving any player what they want."

Agree on Henderson, think it part of the reason he gives the hard man act in games like Chelsea and at the weekend. Not sure where he would go though if he chose to move on - can't see him getting into City/Chelsea/Utd/Arsenal squads and even Spurs seem pretty happy with their midfielders now.

If I was Leiva I'd be exploring my options though, Rodgers doesn't really seem to trust him much. Even when he has been performing well he appears to have a real fight to get back into the squad after any time out and given his injury history that can mean he spends a lot of time out the squad. Him moving in the summer whilst he has 2 years left on contract and Rodger's getting some money for someone he is happier with might suit all concerned.

This Lucas injury is two pronged I feel

1 . Obviously this is going to cost them the title this season

But worse for us ...

2 . Just how good is he going to become his time he's injured ? Last time he was out he suddenly became world class overnight.

Scary stuff
