Not just a Sterling time bomb - ironically he's the one with the longest to run.
In the summer they have Toure, Gerrard, Johnson, Flanagan and Manquillo all able to leave on a free. Other than that they have Skrtl, Jones, Enrique, Henderson and Lambert with just one more year.
Then there's the fact that the likes of Borini, Allen and Sahko are on long term deals with no likely buyers.
They know that if the buckle to Sterling's demands they will have to enhance everybody else's contract and they simply haven't got the funds to do that. Even with the new deal.
They've been a selling club for well over a decade, I dont know why they don't just accept it.
I think this is a very poignant post. While their campaign against Hicks and Gillette had some very progressive aspects to it, it was very broad and encompassed lots of different groups.
When you look at their performance, what H & G didn't really get what the need to win "the hearts and minds" (this is something Kenwright is very good at). They weren't that bad owners, they gave Liverpool lots of money. At the same time they were very dismissive of the club and didn't go to games etc. I can understand anger at that.
The contradiction for Liverpool fans is, are they angry because of a lack of respect to the club/lack of interest, or a lack of money. The current lot talk the talk, but will not fund them as they want to be.
In the end I think being "nice guys" will only get them so far. Sooner or later they will have to put up or shut up. I don't see these yanks giving them anymore money. If you look sat what happened to Villa (who were at a similar level to what Liverpool are currently) and then see what happened when Lerner stopped throwing money at it you can see the problems they face. Their recruitment strategy has been awful for years. As people have pointed out 300 million spent. As the tap starts to get turned off this will exacerbate the problem.
Of course this is offset all the while they can sell a big asset every so often. It's partly why they are looking to sell Stirling behind closed doors to the highest bidder, as they did with Suarez. The problem is, none of the top cubs want Stirling, if they did he'd have already gone. The only way I could see them taking him, is as Real Madrid take say a Hernandez on a cheap deal as backup. They will not pay top dollar for him.
What is most ironic is hearing Liverpool fans whining about the media trying to sell their top players for 40 million. The exact opposite is true, Liverpool sources are using the media to desperately try to offload decent players for top money in order to subsidise spending.
The Stirling situation is becoming quite pivotal for them though. And with the build up of players they have the likes of "Hendo" are going to want top money too.
