ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC"

Well yes, but that is the problem with FFP as agreed currently. What Platini should have done is set a cap on wages and transfer spend across the board and set at a low enough level, which definately would increase competition, reduce losses and improve facilities.

A cap on wages legal challenge would probably succeed under EU law.

The Premier League rule restricting wage increases from TV money is perfectly legal as it doesn't impact individual players.

...the Tony Barrett article (another massive Reds fan by the way) indicates the owners have not supported the manager financially. This is clearly not the case. Ok, other clubs have more financial clout but the Reds have been given monies, it's not the fault of the owners that it has largely been misspent.

Well yes, they have been supported massively as we know. It raises 3 interesting things for me namely;
1) They are almost blind to the realities of how much they have spent (they make every excuse under the sun to defend it, net spend, wages, Falcao etc).
2) There is not every possibility that they will start to annoy the American owners. I can't see the Americans appreciating discontent much, and there is growing annoyance towards FSG (as I predicted earlier in this thread).
3) There is every possibility that less money will be spent going forward as FSG lose interest. The previous 5 years have seen them "speculating" and this was meant to be the accumulation phase. With belts tightening, what exactly is going to be happening going forward?

The situation at Liverpool is now accelerating into a major crisis. On the one hand you have an ownership who have put in the money they feel they ought to start reaping success (and returns). On the other you have a team which is still miles away from being in the top 4 and looks set to lose several key players again this summer (Gerrard, Stirling, Skirtl with Sturridge still out injured).

Sandwiched in between those two you have kopites who don't know which way to vent their anger and frustration. They want more money spent (which will not happen) and want the team to perform better (which again won't happen).

They have never had to worry about money too much before, but the tap will be getting turned off. This summer is a vision for what the future holds under FSG. I can see the fans massively turning on the club, and it's leaders looking rudderless.

The more sensible (or less deluded) amongst them are already closing ranks sensing the wave of anger which is waiting to be unleashed. They are trying to defend the Sterling affair is the media's fault and he's a good guy. They are defending Rodgers saying he has a plan. Defending FSG as the saviours who will invest heavily this summer. Calling for unity and people to not get too angry.

They are in major crisis, and 3 or 4 different things are coalescing perfectly which will send the fans overboard.

.....some good points, I hope you are right about a crisis.

Had a chat with some Kopites on Friday

Sound enough lads, but some aspects of the conversation interested me for the wrong reasons

- Ibe is good enough that no worries if Sterling leaves
- Rodgers will get another year
- Balotelli is a World Class player and it just hasn't worked out this season

We all agreed that it's best for Sterling if he stays though. If he goes to a Man City or Chelsea, he'll be sitting on a bench and making up a quota. If he stays at Liverpool, he'll be the big man on campus and will start every week.

I really like Stirling. If he has turned down £100k a week it clearly is about winning torphies and he is smart enough to know - he won't do that with the RS.

Rather than the media being filled with more puff pieces on Gerrard and his last week as Liverpool captain, it will be all about Sterling and his desire to leave.

Wonder if Gerrard will be relieved by that or not.

....suspect Gerrard might be thinking the timing is exactly right to jump ship and let the vitriol rise allowing his return as the saviour in 18 months time. We'll see if this turns out to be the case.

It wouldnt though, if it was brought in at the club level (ie the club could only spend X amount on its first team squad rather than X amount per player) and if it was implemented Europe-wide.

...there is a perception that Ibe is better but I didn't hear that view expressed until Sterling turned down the contract offer. Ibe might turn out to be very good, only time will tell but they do have a lad called Ojo in the ranks who could be a player.

My red mates think Balotelli is useless so I'm not entirely sure what the thoughts of the majority are.

They may have been having me on in regards to the Balotelli issue

At least, I hope they were

I fear for them otherwise

Couldn't he be backup to Oscar at Chelsea? Although Sterling plays on the wing think his preferred position is a #10. Add in backing up Hazard or Willian with the number of games Chelsea have, think he could get a decent amount of game time.
