I do get that mate. I think the difficulty is though, it's very hard to get any sense of reality when you base things on their neurosis and idea of improvement. They don't deal in reality, they deal in perception and they perceive themselves to be doing great.
Currently they are 8th in the league (they may finish 7th or 6th) pretty much exactly the same as what they did under Rodgers last year. That is exactly the same. Big clubs sack their managers for finishing above that, but the blunt reality is, for most of their fans they no longer view themselves as a big club. Not deep down anyway. Could you imagine United celebrating Van Gaal, or Moyes finishing 8th?
As for the Europa League, this will soon become their latest "black is white" "2 + 2 = 5" moment and loyalty test. The truth is, it is a completely irrelevant trophy. It is the Zenith insurance cup of Europe where the crap of Europe, alongside the losers of the main competition get to compete. Chelsea sacked their manager after winning the thing for goodness sake. Sides will purposefully get knocked out of it rather than having to play games in it.
We'll do well to get that level of acknowledgement out of them though as it's how low they've fallen. They are a smaller club than Chelsea now in how they view this, but like the ignorant 8 year old throwing a tantrum it will be fingers in ears yelling "it has important, it is important" sobbing away deep down knowing that nobody cares about them anymore.
They just can't get the heads round the fact that nobody cares about the Europa League and in all honesty most Evertonians couldn't care less about this derby. It has become a cup final for them, to get alongside their 8th placed trophy filling the void that 26 years without winning the PL has done. To give some context to that, United have won more than double titles in that time than Liverpool managed in the first 70 years of their existence.
For all the blues out there, I would say enjoy the match today. We know it's a glorified testimonial tonight to get players some match fitness before the big match at Wembley on Saturday. For the rats that are lurking, don't worry yourselves too much. Cheer on your cup final and enjoy your mickey mouse cup semi final. Don't despair that you're not in a cup semi final that matters, ask your Norwegian fans to lend you a half and half United/Liverpool scarf and you can cheer for them in the semi's like you did in the 85 cup final. Saturday will not be a complete waste for you, and hopefully if you sing hard enough United might come through and win it for you! (And then sack their manager for finishing above you).
