ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC"

Could you show your working out on that 1 mate, cos I haven't noticed us being deducted any points when we get beat.

Liverpool have gained 6 points from beating us this season. So for example they lose the 2 games vrs us they would have 6 points less than they have now (they have 60 but would have 54)

If they were to lose them 2 games than that would mean that we would of won those 2 games hence an extra 6 points to us (we are on 51 and would be on 57)

Hence a 12 point swing and would put us above them.

But at the end of the day we didn't beat them so its irrelevant!
If we had lost our 2 games to West Brom they would be on 50 points and we would be on 45! They would be 5 points ahead of us.

What it does show though is the value of beating the teams around you. Especially if you win both games

I actually think if Klopp gets that group of players to finish in the top 4 it is some achievement.
You go through the side and bar 2 or 3 genuine quality players they are bottom in terms of quality of players in that group of 6 (unless we massively under rate the likes of Emre Can, Loveren, Mignolet etc).
I guess it goes to show how important it is to get positive results against teams around you

The term 6 pointer is actually mythical, at the end of the day there are only 3 (2 in case of a draw) up for grabs.

They used to say "it's like getting 6 points," but nobody does actually create a 6 point gap by winning a game against a team.

Imagine the first two games of the season were both derby games, and they won both. So after the first two games the league standings would be:

Liverpool P 2 W 2 L 0 Points 6
Everton P 2 W 0 L 2 Points 0

So after 2 games points difference 6, not 12. You don't get points deducted for losing, not in this game :dodgy::dodgy:

Not sure about that to be honest, the only bad tackles in the game were from our players, Barkley and Williams in particular. Obviously Mane was injured in an accidental coming together but we came out of that game with no credit.
Can put in a few bad ones, at least that i remember

That was a shock last night to me. I thought with all their talk of having their game faces on for 'lesser' opposition they might have the actual focus to do it.

I still think they will get that top 4 spot though. The key is the next two games against Stoke and WBA - two dead ball specialist outfits and, therefore, the stiffest of tests for "Big Red" on the run in.

They were always gonna slip up. Their player's massive egos mean they love the plaudits of beating the bigger teams, but think they can stroll the lesser teams. That, and their mutant fans are deathly quiet except in the biggest games.

Oh, and they were missing Mane too.

The point he made was that - if we had won the Derby matches 1-0 and 3-1 - we would then be 4th on 57 points and Liverpool would be =5th with United and Arsenal on 54 pts having played two more games than them. So yes a 12 point swing from 9 behind to 3 ahead. (Or indeed equal with them on 55 points with a win and a draw).

And if we won them we would have 6 pts and they would have none. So we would have 6 pts more and them 6 pts less, that Sir is a 12 point swing in anyone's language

I think the "12 point swing" stat does point one thing out though.
You take points off the teams around you and you can afford slip ups here and there.
Hopefully this is something we can work on next season.

I want to see a horror run for them full of John Walters, Charlie Adam, Benteke, Big Sam, Pulis memes as their season crashes and burns. The hilarity if Wenger finishes ahead of the hipster one.

Anyway.. in the light of the "IfwedwontheDerby" league table I thought I'd improve on the APLT somewhat and add two season's worth of league tables together to arrive at an "ultimate" PLT.. so, for the record here are the notional number of titles won since football was really invented back in 1961 with the Spurs Double winning team.

Mancs 18 (include 93-02 and 08-13 inclusive), RS 17 (67, 73-81 and 83-5, 89-91 their last "win") Leeds 5 (66, 69-72), Everton 4 (63, 64 and 86, 87) Arsenal 4 (last 2016), Chavs (2005-7) 4 Spurs (61-62) 2, Ipswich (1982) and Man City (2014) 1.

All rather pointless but shows the extent to which one team or another were dominant.

Spurs, City and United leading this "season"

Thank heavens we never had to endure the RS winning the league 9 years on the bounce - or the Mancs for 10 and 6.

I'm not so sure Dave, they'd need to spend 150m just to give them a squad big enough to cope with Europe and domestic fixtures without even strengthening much, throw in an extra 10-12 massive games that they have to turn up for and they will be dead on their feet by February. No winter break, a manager who doesn't like a big squad and who doesn't rotate except due to injuries. And who is too stubborn too change.

CL is being touted by them as some holy grail, in reality it will see them struggle badly.

Their also running out of saleable assets to sell to buy, any big spending spree will see them having to lose one of the key players.
I dont think they'll make it back to where they where in one season of CL football, it'll be incremental progress back. The CL next season (if they qualify) will hand them about £50-60M if they reach the round of 16 in performance payments. Their commercial deals are probably geared to triggering more payments if CL qualification occurs. I can see them boosted by the thick end of £100M from all that. If they repeat the trick next season with better players (an out and out striker; GK, LB, RB and dominant CB) they can probably be very competitive as long as they back heel domestic cups and avoid that fixture snarl up.

This is what cements that top 4 place for the beauts for me. Man U have still got to play Man City, Arsenal, Spurs away and Chelsea at home, one of their games in hand is the City game, also they've still got the Europa league.

Arsenal have got Man City, Man U, us and Spurs to play. They'll fold against Stoke and Palace away.

Man City on paper have the easier run in, so it's just a case of who finishes in those third and fourth places between them and the RS for me.
It'll be nip and tuck, but despite all their bleating about having to face lower down the league teams, they know they're miles better off in their run in than the others looking to secure 3rd or 4th.
