ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC"

The Red Echo at it again. This time it's Tributes to Cyrille Regis. There are two stories running at the moment, "Why all Everton fans will pay tribute to Cyrille Regis..." and "Why Cyrille Regis will always be remembered at Anfield.."

Here is a synopsis of the Everton story:-

Everton were bad racists

Here is a synopsis of the Liverpool story:-

Cyrille Regis scored at Anfield once.

Here is a quote from the Everton story, recounting a tale from Clyde Best (not sure what he's got to do with Cyrille Regis) "It was at Goodison Park and he wrote: “Eventually the repetitive drone of monkey chants got me angry. It got so bad and I said: ‘I’m tired of this c**p.’ So I picked the ball up from halfway and I’m on a solo run."

Here is the only mention of racism in the Liverpool story "Regis was a trailblazer for black footballers during less enlightened times, having shot to prominence..."

Here are the links

I'm not trying to sweep under the carpet the problems of racism during that era but I promise you it was not just Everton's problem in this city.

If I were cynical I'd say it was a big coincidence that this come out at the time that Holgates makes accusations.

Par the course for that arse-paper of a publication. Haven't bought it for years. The fact it's owned by Mirror Group and constantly attacks rival "newspaper" the Sun just strikes me as very cynical and a cheap attempt to steal "readership".

Of course reds lap all that sh1t up.

If you want an even more revealing insight, check out the official Echo page on Facebook. The amount of negatively-slanted articles about EFC and the tiresome deluge of RS comments that get hammered on them are beyond belief.

Remember the coverage of Shields case and the tireless championing for his release? Forget about the poor [Poor language removed] who got brained like, and persecuting the real culprit... FREE MICHAEL NOOOOW.

Also when they let Peter Hooton authour that disgraceful hatchet job on the anniversary of Heysel, shameless that.

It has zero positives to say about us and only serves as a daily bugle for you-know who.

And yes the club (and all support) should FOOK DE RED ECHO RAAR OFF.

There's a serious side to this story and it's that a grown adult has ruined his own child's life all in the name of self indulgence. Kids can be very cruel and that poor girl will take a lot of stick for having such a ludicrous name and taking lot of stick at a young age for a prolonged time can leave emotional scars. I'd not be surprised if she was to get it legally changed at the first opportunity. Both the farther and the mother should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves for putting their daughter in this position.

100% agree mate, and don't they have social services in Norway?

Yep, just when you think you’ve seen it all.

It truly is hard to imagine a less germane, more unreasonable, and utterly subjective account relating to football than this total pile of rubbish from Dave (I'm an Evertonian) Prentice. No matter his apparent allegiance (and marital connection to the club).

Firstly - the article references the racism towards Tristan Benjamin (Notts County) and Clyde Best (West Ham) - by the way I was in the ground when he scored that goal against Everton - and not Cyrille Regis. The article was both disrespectful to Everton fans (at a time when all football grounds hosted racist chanting) and just as disrespectful to the memory of Mr Regis. I am (rightly) proud of Everton's contribution tomorrow when we host Regis' famous Albion. Whilst your Liverpool FC readership is treated to his exploits and goals in games against Liverpool - a ground no less racist than any other in the 70s and early 80s - we Evertonians are fed a diet of opprobrium

Is there no end to your paper's pandering and simpering to the Red readership that - aside from celebrating the naming of a baby YNWA in Norway (yep, you couldn't make it up) you have to open old, negative Everton based wounds to (put the) boot (in).

It's high time you took a proper look at the quality of your output - because, until you do, that hollow promise to cover Everton properly will remain just that.
