Let's try a bit of objectivity:
Events leading up to & including the Tribunal
Q1. Did Evra say something (unpleasant) to Suarez?
Quite possibly so but that would be a matter for the FA to decide - in itself it doesn't make the charge against Suarez any less appropriate - if there is a case for Evra to answer then that surely would have been carefully considered.
Q2. Did Suarez reply - if so was it reasonable?
There is clearly an indication that he knew what he was doing - it was certainly with the intent to unsettle & "sledge" Evra. It would also appear that this 'cute' defence (having admitted the words he said) of verbal niceties as he wasn't inviting Evra out for a post match beer was he? perpetuated by many is a convenient smokescreen to deflect from the seriousness of the offence & there is a possibility that the 8 match ban is (potentially) excessive in order to stop others (and especially the likes of those who might have got away with it in the past - Emre) from doing likewise.
Q3. Was Suarez guilty of any breach of common/criminal law?
Apparently not since he's been found guilty of using Racist Comments - it's NOT ok to abuse someone for the colour of their skin but clearly there ARE degrees of guilt (ranging from name calling to serious abuse & physical violence etc.) Clearly the presentation of one man's word (admitted by the perpetrator) was enough for an FA Tribunal but (beyond reasonable doubt) in a court of law almost certainly another matter.
Q4. Was Suarez guilty of a breach of FA Rules?
It's there in the rules regarding abusing another player so a case was there to be answered.
Q5. Was Suarez given an opportunity to give his side of the story - to his manager, legal representatives, at the FA hearing - & have they 'picked on him' as a non-Brit?
Obviously, there was a significant time gap between the event & the hearing. It's clear he's stood by his (seemingly) flawed argument that he wasn't "being racist" etc. This defence however has failed.
Q6. Does Suarez have the opportunity to appeal the decision?
Yes, the player has been given 14 days to appeal.
Events since the announcement of the 8 match ban
Q7. Have LFC gone about this in the appropriate manner?
Since there are serious financial implications in play - Liverpool might lose points, they have lost sight of the truth & have continued to abuse the process - through their statement on their OS, the message sent by the shirts worn by their players & the continued stance they are taking. One can appreciate the loss they are likely to feel as a reason for their position (and obviously their desire to defend one of their own). Nevertheless it is heavy handed, small minded & patently (at this stage of proceedings) wrong.
Q8. Have LFC fans gone about this in the appropriate manner?
Absolutely not - but would we expect any less - heightened by the campaign being conducted by the club, their media representatives (by and large) - Objectively I have to say absolutely not - but this is a bunch of fools being lead by the morally bankrupt! It's certainly ruined their Christmas which has made mine & fans of every other club but theirs. Then again they never are the guilty ones, are they? It's a conspiracy!!
Q9. Is the Terry case relevant?
Not really - but the findings might have set a precedent if Terry was to be dealt with by the FA alone. Hopefully we won't see him punished twice if he is found guilty by a court of law (but I suspect we will)
Q10. Can anyone have sympathy for the stance the players, clubs, fans have taken in the light of all of the above?
Only in so much as the case was a little bit dubious BUT only, I believe, based on the media campaign waged to discredit Evra, support Suarez etc. One can assume that all that has been eliminated & dealt with correctly.
