Electronic music thread

Dunno but Burial has completely lost the magic he used to have imo. Last few solo releases of his are just straight up awful and sound like a guy who has completely run out of ideas and doesn’t have the knowledge of music theory or production to evole his sound.

That said I’m more confident of him making something decent again if he’s working with Four Tet or Thom Yorke.

love his new EP and it definitely is an evolution of this sound, its pretty much beatless.

Not a fan at all tbh, sounds like he just went through a bunch of BBC soundscape sample cds and couldn't be arsed but then lots of ambient sounds like that to me unless its actually musically rich in content which current day Burial certainly isn't. To me it sounds like a guy who completely ran out of ideas and thought if I just take the beats out maybe it will sound fresh.

Enough with the comical overuse of vinyl crackle to fill out tracks

I am being a bit harsh I admit but its such a spectacular drop in quality compared to his early stuff imo.

edit: just realised he has released something In January, ive not heard that yet.

It's the new EP from Jan I was talking about

I listen to a fair bit of ambient/drone/whatever and there is loads more to it then that, particularly with field recordings which he now seems to use. Manipulating field recordings and tape loops have been getting 'big' again since the lockdowns and you can tell that is what he has been doing recently

I’ve been a bit out of the loop the last couple of years, but I'd agree his later stuff isn't a patch on his first two albums. Some of his EPs have been very meh, though.

Saying that, I really like the 2019 remix of Luke Slater's Love.

Yeh I do still like his new stuff but it’s certainly nowhere near the levels of Untrue etc.

With artists such as Burial I think a lot of their music was a product of their struggle. Now I am assuming Burial had a less than ideal upbringing here, but let's be honest, South London is by in large an absolute hole.

Once these musicians break out of their struggle I feel maybe their music suffers a bit. Perhaps their music loses a bit of 'soul'. Again this is just a theory and speculation really.

Not sure if you've read this mate but a lengthy interview with him where he talks about where he's come from, got into music etc. https://www.thewire.co.uk/in-writing/interviews/burial_unedited-transcript

I'm still annoyed his identity got leaked in the first place.

I'm not sure why people need to compare the two really.

His first 2 albums were 'nightbus', loneliness etc.

Since then it's more hauntology/hyper-realism/cyberpunk/ memories of clubs and nights that may not exist anymore.

Interestng, I've not seen that before. I'll give it a read.

That's what I mean, his earlier work in my opinion reflects darker times.

But people fell in love with that style. I don't think it's unusual or unreasonable to suggest his music has changed for the worse. I don't necessarily disagree.

On that subject, Four Tet heavily changed his style after his first few albums. His music was always relatively relaxed, but the majority of his later releases have been more club orientated. I was a fan of his earlier stuff but I much prefer his later releases, but I know a lot don't.
