England Under 21 Euro 2015 Thread

England will be one of the favourites for the tournament they were just up against a better favourite last night. Next two games will be the period to review them. I think it goes Portugal > Germany > England > Denmark

You're probably right, Denmark and England are a toss-up tbh.

Watch them go out in the group stage now, both of them.

Compared to Ger, Por and Den, the Eng squad doesn't seem to have any players considered amongst Europe's best young talents (possibly Kane). Reckon they lack that bit of extra class to edge the important games. Could be wrong though. At least they look a well-coached team that plays decent football.

Excellent article

...
How painfully unrealistic; Premier League journalists, torn away from lovingly transcribing the latest Jose Mourinho press-conference, are parachuted into these age group tournaments and invited to make big, bold judgements on a form of the game they typically cover in the narrowest sense. As a consequence, their response is to despair at anything less than English perfection and, in this instance, to view the U21 squad in the most binary terms.

That shouldn’t be given an audience. With the greatest will in the world, without following this side’s progress over the past year and without really being aware of the standard of the competition in the Czech Republic, there is no basis for judgement. Coaching, at every level, facilitates a journey between points and hopefully a progression from one standard to another. The way this tournament – and others before – are reported on equates to someone standing at a fixed point on a race track and writing an evaluation based on how an individual car looks as it passes.

They see the car once a lap, but know nothing of what happened on the rest of the course.

That’s why context is important. English football’s recovery and development requires the identification of its deficiencies, of course, but it also requires that the impact certain individuals have and the improvements they oversee are given the proper coverage. As a case in point, Gareth Southgate is owed a more favourable reception. He has cultivated a very positive atmosphere amongst his players and the improvement at this level since he took over, back in August 2013, is undeniable.

That should be the story. England lost on Thursday night and it was disappointing, but it should be presented as a speed bump rather than a collision with a concrete wall. Age-group football isn’t solely about wining or losing, it’s a real-world simulation for players and managers and it’s an environment in which the usual habits of the media should be replaced by something more circumspect.

The Mirror headline at the top of the page is a very pertinent example of how blinkered their assessment can be. The five-game sequence referenced spans three different tournaments and is no indicator whatsoever of Southgate’s job-performance. It ignores all the preparatory work of the past year, all the good that has been done and, ultimately, all the benefits that his style of management has provoked. It’s hopelessly lazy and it’s the kind of one-eyed, acrimony-inducing perspective that will ensure that green roots of recovery will always be trampled before they flower.

If you don’t bother to look for improvement, you will ultimately never see it.

Heard England played alright on route to losing

Can't really have a go at them if that's the case

They actually did play really well. The Portuguese keeper made some good saves of Redmond and Linegarde. The Portuguese team were well organised though and technically superior, but nowt new there. Having said that it was a good game and on another day, they get a point against the best looking team in the tournament.

Special mention for Butland,if I were a Stoke fan I wouldn’t be gutted if one of the big boys gave them bags of cash for Begovic and Butland took the no 1 jersey,as he is a very good young goalie.

The Serbian team are definitely worth a watch as dark horses.

Agree, they knocked the holders Spain who are good team (including Deulofeu) out in the playoffs.
