Had money on a Root century and a Stokes 50 so very happy. Typical Test day with the momentum shifting by the session. Cracking stuff from the middle order but a pity we've lost 3 wickets in the last session just as we were getting in control.

12 months ago Australia would be batting in this game now. That is a very tidy recovery today.
This test could get tasty.

.....disappointing to lose Buttler so late in the day.

343-7 at the close of play. Good fightback by England, Root is a class act.

Fairly even day overall which bodes well for the rest of the series.

Very even day, Joe Root and Ballance did well.

Feel the Aussies will want to target Broad early on and then finish off the tail end quickly.

Would also look at bringing Morgan in and dropping Bell, been woeful recently.

Good to stable the day after such a terrible start.

Bat out for another 20/25 runs tomorrow and see where we are.

Going to be a very interesting test.

By getting so many runs on the board, I think England have edged the day by a nice margin. I think 300-7 would have been a level day.

As for Bell, who knows what the second innings will bring, but I said last week I would have been happy to see a specialist spinner who bats a bit come in for Bell at some point in the series and have Ali pushed back up the order.

Good decision to bat first, I wouldn't want to bat last on this pitch, Lyon can get the ball to turn a lot and an England collapse under pressure is always likely.

Cook did the right thing by standing up to the Aussie quicks and demanding his team step up. A lot of innings are going to start 40-3 this series because of the quality of bowling.

Joe Root is something special isn't he?
