England v Australia - THE ASHES

load of people banging on about it being a different ashes if siddle played it all.

absolute tosh. forgot he was a middle order batsman. what would they have got? 61 all out if he was playing?

Wanted to see England score just one run to make the convicts bat again. Have to pad up and come back out in order to "knock one off"

i think i only watched about 3 overs of this match.

ah well, glad the series is over and we have to wait another two years.

that was the most abysmal series i've ever seen - the genuine lack in quality was astounding, when that two match series vs NZ was so so good. ah well england won, totally different aussie team in the next one, over half the team will be different.

Some Aussies wanted Siddle playing all series, many others wanted to see Cummins picked for this match. They need to stop the 'what if' stuff.

They should have played Siddle earlier though - bad error on the Aussie's part. England gave up a bit too easily in this test after all Cook's bluster about being desperate to win 4-1. Deserved the series win however. Really enjoyed it even if some of the batting was abysmal.

Michael Clarke: Retiring Australia captain criticises Ashes pitches
Australia captain Michael Clarke bowed out of international cricket by criticising the pitches during his side's Ashes series defeat in England.

Australia were beaten 3-2 by England, despite winning the final Test by an innings and 46 runs at The Oval.

The 34-year-old said he wants to see groundsmen have the "courage" to go with what they think is a good wicket.

"I want to see good and fair cricket for both batters and bowlers," said Clarke, who lost on four Ashes tours.

"You're given a role, a responsibility, and a job and you want to be able to do your best at that.

"I've got a feeling, from the conversations I've had with a lot of the groundsmen in this country, they're a little bit disappointed they haven't been able to do as they've wanted to do."

The five-Test series was played at Cardiff, Lord's, Edgbaston, Trent Bridge and The Oval respectively.

"I think we've seen in the first two Test matches a lot of talk from the media and the commentators about how flat the wickets were, yet those two Test matches were over in four days. One team won and one team lost. The next three are over in two and a half, three days.

"If the groundsman feels he knows how to produce a good wicket that will be a great battle of Test match cricket then I'd like to see them back themselves and go with that and not be persuaded by what's said in the media or what the commentators say."

There was a photo on Joe Root's Facebook today of him and Warner in the changing sheds posing for the camera each with a fist towards it and holding a beer in the other.. Fantastic spirit after the game despite the drama between the two of them on the field and in the pub. Love that they've settled it.

And then you read this tosh from Clarke. Sour grapes from a poor captain in poor touch being forced to retire early because his team mates dislike the arrogant, self centered beaut.

He'll be remembered for what he was and what he didn't achieve, and will always be a step below the Pontings, Waughs and Borders of this world.

i got his point - i prefer absolute roads where 517/1 plays 500 odd and the game peters out to a draw.

all 5 matches had a result - the pitches weren't the problem, it was the players. who can honestly say there was some cracking bowling on display? there's a reason why those two johnson bouncers stand out so much, nothing much else was good. they just hang it out outside of off stump and let the batsmen make the mistake.

they chopped and changed so much. these are the same people moaning that the team was too old that wanted siddle instead of starc or hazelwood i guess? their batting was the issue anyway.

It is a tough series to analyse in terms of England winning it because of this and despite that. My list of despites seems longer than the becauses! Two average teams who took it turn to be good and awful.
