I still maintain it's because our defence is [Poor language removed]. England have never been a footballing side, we win games through intensity and pressure, always have done. I think if we had a clear number one choice keeper and a fit Ferdinand we would have done much better at this World Cup.

Wiki England under 21 squad.
GK
Scott Loach (age 22) England Watford
Frank Fielding (age 22) England Blackburn Rovers
Alex McCarthy (age 20) England Reading
DF
Michael Mancienne (age 22) England Chelsea
Micah Richards (age 22) England Manchester City
James Tomkins (age 20) England West Ham United
Kyle Naughton (age 21) England Tottenham Hotspur
Ryan Bertrand (age 20) England Chelsea
Chris Smalling (age 20) England Manchester United
Kyle Walker (age 20) England Tottenham Hotspur
MF
Fabrice Muamba (age 22) England Bolton Wanderers
Lee Cattermole (age 22) England Sunderland
Jack Rodwell (age 19) England Everton
Tom Cleverley (age 20) England Manchester United
Jack Wilshere (age 18) England Arsenal
Fabian Delph (age 20) England Aston Villa
Jack Cork (age 21) England Chelsea
Dan Gosling (age 20) Unattached

Andy Carroll (age 21) England Newcastle United
Daniel Sturridge (age 20) England Chelsea
Danny Welbeck (age 19) England Manchester United
Nathan Delfouneso (age 19) England Aston Villa

No Liverpool. Only Rodwell for us. Gosling was from Plymouth. What happened to the hot bed of Merseyside football? Could a Merseyside school of excellence be a tonic.

U21 squad's don't really mean anything, most of them end up [Poor language removed] anyway.

A few in Germany thought that, bet they don't now. Maybe the continued poor show at full international level is primed by lacklustre performance and an acceptance thereof at under 21. If youth is not the future, perhaps we should throw it all in and just follow the snooker.

Because the Spaniards only have three players on the winning side that don't play in Spain - David Silva (just signed for Citeh so he doesn't count), Reina (who didn't play a minute) and Fabregas (who only played as a reserve).

Yeah but it's a good question as he was responding to a post about the relationship between success and players abroad with a perfect exception (as you point out). not many German players play outside the Bundesleague either. Semi-finalists in the last 2 WC and runners-up in the last Euro. I think Spain and Germany can be cited as success stories without the need to export players. I think in the end it's just a question of quality + mentality. Germany have always had the second in abundance
So whenever they get together a good group of players ( as they frequently do), they win [Poor language removed], or come very close. Spain have always seemed to have a fair amount of the first but lacked the second untill recently

I was being sarcastic to prove my point.

England do not play enough full international games for players to get to know one another properly

This is one of the bigger problems IMHO...but then you get managers b*tching about too many internationals. The core of the Spanish side all play for the same club, but not Holland or Germany or Uruguay. So yeah, I debunked my own thoughts on the matter. Well done, me.

I honestly think that your media has a lot to do with it. Sure, all of those other countries listed above have their media hordes but the English media is on a totally different level.

Very hard for the players to concentrate and perform. Yeah, they're pros but again, so is your media machine.

I'd even venture to say that if England received NO coverage domestically, they'd get to the quarters every World Cup regardless of who they play.

the media sing from a different songsheet from everyone else. the majority of england fans you talk too are fairly realistic about the england teams chances while the media go over the top about how england should win it. england are always contenders but need a lot of things to come together and go their way.

english bookies have them about 7-1 when they should be about 20-1, but most locals back their own team and bet for fun.

anyway the over reaction is massive as was the hype.

Good point, from you both.

Fabio has continued his theme of making some very odd decisions.

*Green's exclusion seems like a knee-jerk reaction. Is Robinson really any better or any more likely to have an international future?
*What is the sense in including Gibbs in the party? The lad only has 11 Arsenal appearances to his name. Is there a lack of left backs to cover for Ashley Cole? What about Baines, Warnock and Kieran Richardson? What has Gibbs done to earn a fast-track promotion? It seems like Capello needs to back up the positive spin that the FA made him put out that the future is rosy.
*I would question the wisdom of including Wilshere too. Surely the likes of Parker, Huddlestone and Rodwell are ahead of him in the pecking order.
*Bobby Zamora is 29 and has had one decent season at the highest level, thanks largely to an excellent manager. He'll be 31 by the time the Euros come around. Really? What has Crouch done wrong?

Personally I would have made this an unofficial B interntational to look at the fringe players around the ages 24-26.

*Richards looked impressive at right back for England for a spell. Lets have another look at him as back up for Johnson. His versatility would be useful in tournament football. Ditto his clubmate Onouha. Admittedly they won't play much for City, but what other options do we have at right fullback? I'm not a big fan of Brown.
*Cahill and Jags are certainly worth a look. Shawcross possibly is too. Maybe even Smalling. We know what Terry can do.
*Scott Parker isn't in the ideal age bracket, but we're short of mature holding midfielders. He was awesome for West Ham and should have had more international recognition before now.
*Huddlestone and Rodwell are both capable of holding or playing further forward. With Hargreaves persistently injured, the only anchor we have is Barry. There's much more urgency to cover this role than to groom Wilshere to deputise for Gerrard.
*Bentley looked like Beckham's heir-apparent for a while. Whilst we're making up the numbers, let's give him another shot.
*If we're looking to test out new strikers then Gabby Agbonlahor has to be in with a shout. He's lightening quick, he's still only 23 and he does it consistently for Villa. Sturridge from Chelsea could be worth closer inspection too.

This would be my squad to play Hungary (excluding anyone who had featured in the World Cup):

Hart, Foster, Robinson, Richards, Onouha, Jagielka, Dawson, Cahill, Shawcross, Baines, Richardson, Parker, Huddlestone, Rodwell, Bentley, Young, A. Johnson, Walcott, Wilshere, Agbonlahor, C. Cole, Sturridge, Bent.

What a load of horse manure.
England vs Hungary.
England vs Macedonia.
England vs Luxembourg.
England vs Switzerland.

Yeah, prime fixtures with loads of pride riding on them there.
Lets see some competitive action taking on Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Lets see the opposition give a toss, let alone the England players. What can be found out of Prem players having a run out against part time mechanics and waiters from the former Easter Blocs? Time for a big change in thought, time for a bit of grit and national pride.

Capello, and the FA, ha, I spit in their sandwiches.
