Equal pay

Tipp blue

If I agreed with you, we’d both be wrong.
The FAI football association of Ireland have announced that women will get paid the same as men for representing Ireland.. the record attendance at an Irish women's international game is 8000 and I've seldom seen the women's game televised. While the men's team is rubbish they still bring in 35-40 thousand spectators and is always on the telly. Should income from football be one pot and everyone is paid equally or should those who bring in more money earn more?

In fairness a lot of them do give their apperence fees to charities. Could this be expected of the women who aren't paid anything near what men get for their clubs.

Yes.

And a lot of doing it isn't really good enough, its should be a prerequisite that the money is given to charity.

Either that or scrap payments altogether but the more money given to charity the better.

They don't deserve equal pay, the standard of football is light years from the mens game and the numbers they pull in are poor

This is about international footy though, nobody is saying women should get the same as a prem player.

Which I agree they shouldn't, based on the demand for the product.

I think it is good that organizations who can commit funds to women's sports do. I think they have a future but it takes commitment financially. In the US people make fun of the WNBA but the actual NBA was not so much better off 20 years into its existency.

Speaking of the US this is a completely different conversation here, which I don't want to get in to, but it does show what that financial commitment can produce.

WNBA is muck.. the only way to improve it to something that people would want to watch is to lower the baskets by at least 6 inches probably more to allow some more of them to dunk,

It's really not about being able to stand up to the men's teams. There are people who watch sports for the high level skill exclusively but that's largely not the case. It's why college sports exist over here and the lower leagues do in Europe.

As far as I'm aware, all the men's players get paid the same for representing their country. So it's not merit based payments like club football where the better players earn more.
So if it just a flat appearance fee for representing your country at football regardless of ability, I see no reason why women should get less for doing the same job

Great gesture.

It should be happening all over, been an issue with the US teams, the Women far exceed expectations and have actually won stuff for decades compared to the men's team and still don't have equal pay.

What % percentage of pay do the English team get compared to their club wages, i can't see the FA paying full wages.

I won't hold my breathe, FIFA will ignore this and let the nation FA's decide if there should be equal pay.

I didn't really like women's football, but the last World cup in France was a excellent advert for Women's football, absolute cracking tournament.

The US Soccer thing with the Women's team is a complicated issue that basically boils down to having to have different systems because the bonuses for the Men's World Cup are many multiples greater than that for the Women's. The Women accepted the different system but now say they have to work harder to make the same amount. And they're probably not wrong but US Soccer on its own can't fix the issue unless FIFA is going to hand out similar amounts. FIFA can't do that because they aren't getting the ad money at the same level.

Just split the federations into separate entities, and let each side keep what they earn.. It’s not the same game. If it was the men and women would be playing against each other already. The revenue generated by the teams is vastly different, and the men’s game is just more popular.

That said, if in the US we get a World Cup year where the women out earn the men, then by all means they should be compensated as such.

I’m not of the belief that the women’s game would become as popular as the men’s if it was only marketed better. The best women’s teams are essentially the level of a good high school boys club side. Same rules, but in reality it’s just a different game.
