It’s finally here, in less than 24 hours time the 17th European Championships kicks off at the home of Bayern Munich, the Allianz Arena, as hosts Germany take on the Tartan Army in Scotland. This here thread will preview and review each day’s action with details on which channel (UK) will be showing the games and the head to heads between each nation and other factoids

Day 1

So as mentioned, Germany and Scotland kick us off as the first game of ITV’s coverage (BBC highlights will be later if no one fancies 90 minutes of Sam Matterface’s commentary).

Since becoming a United country again, Germany have only played the Scots 7 times, winning 5, losing 1 and drawing the other. The only time they’ve met in the Euros finals was at Euro 92 with Germany winning 2-0. Scotland have only ever beat Germany 4 times, the last being 1-0 in a 1999 friendly in Bremen

Since the expansion to 8 teams in 1980, the host nation has had mixed fortunes in their opening game with just 5 winning, 3 being joint hosts (Netherlands and Belgium in 2000, Ukraine in 2012)

Strap in guys it’s going to be a fun 4 weeks

Aaaand we’re off, Germany begin their own party in emphatic style with a 5-1 demolition of Scotland, for whom Ryan Porteous won’t the most popular fella of right now after his suicidal lunge led to Germany’s third and the team playing the second half with 10 men. Scotland are now already facing the possibility of elimination in their next game

On to tomorrow then as things really get underway with the start of 3 matches a day over the course of the next week. First up at 2pm it’s ITV’s second game of the tournament, the second game from Group A as Hungary face Switzerland in Koln. The Magyars hold the better record in fixtures between the 2, winning 30 out of the 46 matches played with the only tournament game between the two taking place all the way back at the 1938 World Cup, Hungary winning that game 2-0 in Lille

2nd game of the day stays with ITV with the Group B opener between Spain and Croatia in the German capital of Berlin. Spain have the better h2h winning 6 of 10 meetings, the latter 2 being the final of the Nations League in Rotterdam just over a year ago and the last 16 clash between the two in Copenhagen at the last Euros 3 years ago

The final game of the day sees the BBC make their bow for this year’s tournament by screening the second Group B game between holders Italy and Albania in Dortmund. Unsurprisingly Italy have won all four meetings between the two, two in friendlies and the other two coming in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup

Hiya stevie.

Day 2 comes to an end with results going pretty much as they should. Switzerland beat Hungary comfortably in the opener, Spain delivered a devastating first half display to beat Croatia for the third time in 2 years at a tournament while Italy made a successful start to their defence of the trophy but only after a record breaking start from Albania

So on to Day 3 which opens oddly with the first game in Group D as Poland take on the Netherlands in Hamburg at 2pm on BBC One. The Oranje have the better record in fixtures winning 9 out of 19 meetings with the Poles’ last victory coming in 1979 during qualifying for Euro 80. This will be their first meeting in a finals tournament

Second game of the day kicks off Group C at 5pm as Slovenia take on Denmark in Stuttgart live on ITV. Slovenia will be looking for their first competitive win against the Danes, having lost 5 out of 6 meetings and like the previous fixture this too is a first time clash at a tournament

The final game of the day sees England enter the fray against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen at 8pm live on the BBC. The 3 Lions aren’t in the best of form, having only won once in four fixtures this calendar year and they step into the unknown as it’s the first competitive meeting between the two nations with Serbia as a separate entity though England did beat the combined Serbia and Montenegro in a 2003 friendly and the former Yugoslavia (of which Serbia came from) 5 times in 14 fixtures up until 1989

The first weekend of the tournament comes to an end and first impressions is it’s been a fun start to the tournament, with 23 goals across the 7 games. The 2 of the 3 games today went to type though nothing spectacular from England or the Netherlands while Denmark and Slovenia played out the tournament’s first draw

On to Day 4 then with the start of Group E and the second game in Group D. First up at 2pm on the BBC is the Group E opener between Romania and Ukraine in Munich. It’s Ukraine’s return to tournament football after missing out in Qatar and since the war with Russia and they have a mixed record against their opponents with both recording 3 wins a piece from the 6 meetings, the game will be their first competitive meeting

Second up at 5pm on ITV is the second game from Group E as Belgium take on Slovakia in Frankfurt. For the remaining players of Belgium’s ‘Golden Generation’ this will be their likely final chance of winning anything and they’ll be determined to get off to a great start against a team they’ve only faced 3 previous times, winning one and drawing two. This, like the other game in the group, will be their first competitive meeting

The final game of the day, at 8pm on ITV, is the second game from Group D as France enter the fray against Austria in Düsseldorf. The 2 time champions are looking to claim a third crown, having missed out on retaining their World Cup 2 years ago and they have a solid record against Austria, winning 13 out of 25 meetings with only two previous tournament clashes, both at World Cups in 1934 and 1982 with 1 win apiece

Day 4 done and we have our first shock of the tournament with Slovakia beating Belgium in the day’s middle game, France got off to a winning start albeit with a bit of help from an Austrian defender while Ukraine’s return to tournament football ended in a 3-0 hiding by Romania

On to Day 5 with just the two games on offer as the first round of group games concludes with Group F. First up at 5pm on the BBC is the tournament debut for Georgia as they take on Turkey in Dortmund. Georgia have only ever beaten the Turks once, 17 years ago in a friendly with their opponents winning 3 of the other 4 meetings

The second game of the day, at 8pm also on the BBC, sees 2016 winner’s Portugal take on the Czech Republic in Leipzig. Portugal, for whom Cristiano Ronaldo will likely be playing his final tournament, have the better record, winning 4 of the five meetings between the two nations since the break up of Czechoslovakia. This will be the 4th time they’ve met at the Euros, Czech won the first at Villa Park at Euro 96 with Portugal winning the latter two in Geneva at Euro 2008 and in Warsaw 4 years later

Day 5 in the books and the first round of groups is complete, Georgia were incredibly unlucky in their debut, falling victim to the old ‘keeper comes up last minute only for opponents to break towards an empty net’ trope as they lost 3-1 to Turkey while Portugal left it late to beat the Czechs after being 1-0 down

Onto Day 6 and the start of round 2 of the group games. First up at 2pm, live on ITV, is the Group B game between Croatia and Albania in Hamburg. Both sides were beaten on matchday 1 so pressure is on as the loser will likely be eliminated from the tournament. Incredibly this will be the two countries first ever meeting on the international stage

From there we go back to Group A starting at 5pm, live on the BBC, as hosts Germany take on Hungary in Stuttgart. Germany will be big favourites to make it 2 from 2 after their thrashing of Scotland while pressure is on the Magyars after losing to Switzerland. Germany just have the edge in head to head meetings with 13 wins to Hungary’s 12 with 12 draws while Hungary have the better tournament H2H with 2 wins to Germany’s 1 having beaten them at the 1912 Olympics and famously the 1954 World Cup, Germany’s came as revenge in the final of that tournament while they drew at the last Euros 3 years ago

The final game, the second from Group A, at 8pm live on the BBC, sees the Tartan Army rock up to Cologne for Scotland’s game against Switzerland. The Scots are still licking wounds from the hammering in Munich and will be desperate to get their campaign back on track against a Swiss side who will book a place in the last 16 with a win. Scotland have the better record between the two with 8 wins from 16 games and they have only one previous meeting on a tournament stage, at Villa Park at Euro 96 when Scotland were denied a quarter final place despite winning, because of the Netherlands scoring a consolation at Wembley against England. That game was Scotland’s last win at a major tournament

Thank you for doing this mate much appreciated it.

Day 6 comes to a close and we have our first last 16 participant in the form of hosts Germany after their 2-0 win over Hungary while Switzerland all but booked their place with a point v Scotland barring an unbelievable goal swing. Croatia and Albania gave themselves slim hope with a draw with each other but one or both will likely be out by next week

Onto Day 7 then starting off at 2pm, live on ITV, with the Group C clash between Slovenia and Serbia in Munich. Serbia made life difficult for England on matchday 1 succumbing to a solitary goal so come into this knowing a failure to win could potentially eliminate them against a Slovenia side who battled to a draw with Denmark. Head to head between the two is even stevens with one win apiece from four meetings and this will be their first clash in a finals

2nd game of the day, at 5pm on the BBC, is the second game in Group C in Frankfurt between England and Denmark. Both sides flattered to deceive in their opener but the Three Lions know a repeat result from MD1 would take them through and leave the Danes with a do or die showdown v Serbia next week. England have a strong record against Denmark with 13 wins from 22 meetings losing just 4 times. They have met on 3 previous occasions at tournaments, twice at Euros, a 0-0 draw in Malmo at Euro 92 and famously the semi final 3 years ago which England won 2-1 after extra time. The other meeting came in Niigata in the last 16 of the 2002 World Cup with England also winning that 3-0

The Final game of the day, at 8pm on ITV, is the biggest game of the tournament so far, a repeat of the 2012 final in Group B as Spain, winners that day, meet holders Italy in Gelsenkirchen. Both sides won on MD1 so victory for either won’t immediately qualify them for the last 16 but it will still make for a mouth watering clash. That 2012 win was one of 14 Spain wins against the Azzurri, giving them the edge in H2H with Italy holding 10 wins and there being 12 draws. They have met 12 times at tournaments, most recently the semi final of last year’s Nations League finals

Thursday is the first truly big day with the heavyweight Latin clash topping off the Balkans derby and Denmark rolling back the years to 1983 and Allan Simonsen at Wembley.

On a serious note, tomorrow will give us a good idea of England's path to the final ignominy. A defeat would leave then looking at a possible second place in the group and a second round clash with Germany. Spain, if they beat Italy, would likely follow in the last 8 if England could overcome the hosts. Hardly the path to go...

An England win and it looks like they'll play a third-placed side in the last 16, with the second placed side in the Spain/Italy group waiting in the quarters. That probably looks the canny way to go...
