Euro 2024 Day by Day

Day 19 ends and we have our final 8 lined up, Netherlands booked their place in the quarters with a comfortable 3-0 win over Romania while Turkey beat the odds to knockout the impressive Austria 2-1

There is now another 2 day breather before the last 8 gets underway and here is the complete line up for the games

Friday 5th July
Spain vs Germany (5pm)
Portugal vs France (8pm)

Saturday 6th July
England vs Switzerland (5pm)
Netherlands vs Turkey (8pm)

Back to business tonight with the start of the quarter finals

First up at 5pm it’s the glamour tie between hosts Germany and Spain in Stuttgart. Spain are the team to beat this far with 4 wins from 4 while Germany will look to impress in front of their own fans

Then at 8pm it’s another big clash as France face Portugal in Hamburg. Both laboured to get here, with France narrowly beating Belgium and Portugal surviving pens against Slovenia

Indeed

Looking forward to see this Spain attack but in particular Lamine. We’ll be hearing his name even more for many years to come I’m sure but matches like this tend to be memorable in a player’s career - even for one so young. Nico in tandem, quite a synergy. Plus, Germany have great youth in Musiala & Wirtz that inspire with their play & ability to deliver irrespective of the pressure/occasion

I hope it lives up to the hype because I expect a performance to be enjoyed, even to a neutral

And the first night of the Quarters ends in drama with both games going the distance. Spain made it 5 wins from 5 with a last minute extra time winner to shatter the whole of Germany and put themselves two wins away from a third title. They will play France in the semis on Tuesday, who have just eliminated Portugal via penalties after their tie ended in a goalless draw over 120 minutes

Onto tomorrow then which will complete the semi final line up, first at 5pm live on the BBC it’s England against Switzerland in Düsseldorf. The Three Lions were very fortunate to make it through against Slovakia but will make a bit of national history as they play in the last 8 or better for a 4th consecutive tournament, passing Sven’s ‘Golden Generation’ of 2002-2006. Switzerland come into the tie having impressively dispatched holders Italy and will be gunning to add the 2020 runners up to their scalp sheet. History is on England’s side as they have won 19 of the 22 meetings between the two to Switzerland’s 3, the last of which came in qualifying for the 1982 World Cup. This will be the 5th time they’ve met at a tournament and 3rd at a Euros after a 1-1 draw which opened Euro 96 and a 3-0 England win at Euro 2004

The final game of the last 8 is at 8pm, live on ITV, between Netherlands and Turkey. The Dutch cruised past Romania in their L16 tie while the Turks needed an incredible last gasp save to hold on and beat Austria. The winners will head to Wednesday’s second semi final against England or Switzerland. The Dutch have a slight edge in the head to heads, 6 wins to Turkey’s 4 from 14 meetings and this will be their first clash at a major tournament

The Quarter Finals come to an end and we have our completed semi final line up. England put the nation through the wringer yet again, coming from behind again to see off Switzerland on penalties to reach a third semi final in 4 tournaments. Their opponents will be the Netherlands who, in the only tie completed in 90 mins, came from behind to end the Turkish dream

That tie will be played on Wednesday night with an 8pm kick off with the other semi final taking place between France and Spain on Tuesday also with an 8pm kick off

It’s the final week of the Euros and we are down to the final 4 teams in two blockbuster semi finals

The first semi final, at 8pm on BBC, sees Spain take on France in Munich. Spain have won all 5 of their games to get here, including their dramatic extra time win over hosts Germany while Les Bleus winning 2 of their 5 ties in normal time and needed penalties to get past Portugal in the Quarters

Spain have the slight edge in head to heads winning 16 to France’s 13 from 36 meetings (7 draws). This will be their 7th meeting in tournament football and their 5th at the Euros with France holding a 4-1-1 record overall

Come on Holland.

And we have our first finalist, Spain continue their winning run coming back from a goal down to beat France 2-1 making it 6 wins from 6 and book their place in Berlin on Sunday

Tomorrow is the second semi final, again at 8pm and airing on ITV as England face the Netherlands. The 3 Lions are playing their 4th semi final under Gareth Southgate but they have lived very dangerously to get this far, ten days ago they were 90 seconds from heading out in the last 16, they are now 90 mins or more away from a second successive Euros final. For the Dutch it’s been a mixed bag of a tournament, they were below par in losing to Austria which landed them on this side of the draw, were comfortable against Romania then had to come from behind to beat Turkey

The Netherlands narrowly edge the head to heads between the two with 7 wins to England’s 6 from 22 contests (9 draws) and thus will be their 5th meeting at a tournament with the Oranje holding a 2-1-1 advantage. Their last meeting was in the semis of the inaugural Nations League final 4 tournament with the hosts winning 3-1 after extra time, their most famous meeting though came with England’s 4-1 win on a balmy summer night at Wembley in Euro 96

And we have our final, Spain will play England in Sunday’s showpiece in Berlin after a stunning last gasp winner from sub Ollie Watkins saw the Three Lions come from 1-0 down to beat the Netherlands 2-1. There’ll be inquests for the Dutch as to why they didn’t seem to push on after the opener but for England it’s a second straight Euros final and a shot at redemption after the heartbreaking shootout defeat to Italy at Wembley in 2021

It’s Final time and it promises to be a memorable one depending which side you follow. For the only time in the tournament both ITV and BBC will be showing the game as England take on Spain at 8pm in Berlin

Spain have won all 6 games to get here, scoring 13 and conceding just 3 with only one of their knockout games going to extra time, the quarter final win over hosts Germany. England have laboured somewhat to get here, winning only half of their games within regulation time, scoring 8 and conceding 4 with 2 games going to extra time, one of which went to pens, the quarter final against Switzerland

Just 2 weeks ago England were 90 seconds from going out of the tournament but are now in just their 3rd tournament final, and second straight Euros final while Spain are into their 5th, the fourth in this competition and looking for their first win since 2012

The Three Lions hold the edge in head to heads with 14 wins to La Roja’s 10 from 27 meetings (3 draws) and this will be their 5th meeting at a finals, third at the Euros with England winning both, 3-1 in Naples during Euro 80 and the penalty shootout win at Wembley in 96. England also won their most recent meeting 3-2 in Seville in the first season of the Nations League in 2018

I think that Switzerland will definitely beat England BUT if they don't then the Netherlands will definitely beat England. Sorry, I went a bit @davek there.
