It’s finally here, in less than 24 hours time the 17th European Championships kicks off at the home of Bayern Munich, the Allianz Arena, as hosts Germany take on the Tartan Army in Scotland. This here thread will preview and review each day’s action with details on which channel (UK) will be showing the games and the head to heads between each nation and other factoids

Day 1

So as mentioned, Germany and Scotland kick us off as the first game of ITV’s coverage (BBC highlights will be later if no one fancies 90 minutes of Sam Matterface’s commentary).

Since becoming a United country again, Germany have only played the Scots 7 times, winning 5, losing 1 and drawing the other. The only time they’ve met in the Euros finals was at Euro 92 with Germany winning 2-0. Scotland have only ever beat Germany 4 times, the last being 1-0 in a 1999 friendly in Bremen

Since the expansion to 8 teams in 1980, the host nation has had mixed fortunes in their opening game with just 5 winning, 3 being joint hosts (Netherlands and Belgium in 2000, Ukraine in 2012)

Strap in guys it’s going to be a fun 4 weeks
Boring so far.

Day 7 ends with a mix of late drama and underwhelming disappointment. Serbia stuck a dagger into Slovenian hearts with a 95th minute equaliser to keep their slim hopes alive, England flattered to deceive again and were fortunate to get away with a point against Denmark while the big heavyweight clash of the day ended with Spanish dominance but only an Italian own goal to show for it

On to Day 8 which begins at 2pm, on BBC, with the Group E game between Slovakia and Ukraine in Düsseldorf. Slovakia caused the upset of the tournament so far in beating Belgium in MD1 while Ukraine were humbled 3-0 by Romania. Ukraine slightly edge the head to heads winning 3 out of 8 meetings to the Slovak’s 2 and this will be their first meeting at a major tournament

From there we move to Group D, starting at 5pm, live on ITV, with the game between Poland and Austria in Berlin. Both sides come into this on the back of defeats on MD1 and knowing that defeat here will likely mean an exit. Form goes on the Poles’ side as they’ve won 5 of the 9 meetings between the two with their one previous tournament meeting coming in a 1-1 draw at Euro 2008 in Vienna

The last game of the day, the second in Group D, live on BBC, sees the Netherlands take on France in Leipzig. With a win apiece, both sides know a victory would go a long way to securing top spot and the better last 16 draw. France have won 16 of the 30 meetings previously with the Dutch winning 11 and this will be their 4th meeting at a Euros having previously faced in the quarter finals in 96 at Anfield (France won on pens), a Group D game in 2000 in Amsterdam (Netherlands won) and a Group C game in 2008 in Berne (Netherlands again won)

Day 8 is over and out with the 3 games producing a stirring fight back by Ukraine to keep their tournament alive, a comfortable victory for Austria which all but eliminates Poland and VAR stepping in to give us our first goalless draw of the tournament

Onto Day 9 then as we wrap up round 2 of the group stage, beginning at 2pm, live on BBC, with the Group F game between Georgia and the Czech Republic in Hamburg. Both sides were unlucky to take anything from their first game and will be looking at a positive result, not only to avoid elimination but to give ve themselves a slim chance of qualifying. This will be their first ever meeting on the international stage

From there we go to the second game in the group, at 5pm live on ITV, as Turkey take on 2016 winners Portugal in Dortmund. Both sides took home the win first time round so the pressure is on to secure the points to put one foot in the last 16. Portugal have an exceptional record against the Turks, winning 7 out of nine meetings including 3 previous clashes at the Euros, in 96 in Nottingham, in 2000 in an Amsterdam quarter final and in 2008 in Geneva

The final game of the day takes us back to Group E for the second game in that group, at 8pm live on ITV, as Belgium take on Romania in Cologne. The Belgians will be looking to bounce back after their shock opening game defeat while Romania are looking to build on their first win. The two sides have a fairly even head to head record with 5 wins apiece and 2 draws from 10 meetings and this will be their first at a major finals

Day 9 done and with it both the second round of group games and the final day of 2pm kick offs. Todays action saw the plucky Georgians pick up their first ever tournament point, Portugal book their place in the last 16, thanks in part to the craziest of own goals and Belgium get their tournament back on track with a victory over Romania

Onto Day 10 and the final round of games begin with Group A, both games will kick off at 8pm. On BBC One it’s do or die for Scotland as they go in search of a first tournament win in 28 years against Hungary in Stuttgart, with goal difference against them only a big win will give them a shot of making the last 16, a Hungary win would give them an outside chance of going through pending other results. Scotland’s head to head against the Magyars is mixed with 3 wins and 4 defeats from 9 meetings and this will be their first at a major finals

Over on BBC Two, Scottish eyes and ears will be on events in Frankfurt as hosts Germany face Switzerland. A home victory by a handsome margin coupled with a Scottish win would do but the Swiss know if they avoid defeat they will be through regardless what happens elsewhere and could top the group with a win themselves. Form is on the hosts side having beaten the Swiss 35 times from 52 meetings and they too meet at a major finals for the first time

Day 10 ends with dramatic endings in both games, the big story is Scotland suffering another group stage exit as Hungary struck in the 100th minute to, for now, have one of the best 3rd place spots. There was drama in the other game as well as hosts Germany scored a 92nd minute equaliser to steal top spot back from Switzerland. The Swiss will now kick off the last 16 next Saturday against the runners up in Group B with Germany facing the runners up in Group C the same day

On to Day 11 which sees the conclusion of Group B, both games kick off at 8pm and will be shown by the BBC. On BBC One it’s the game between Italy and Croatia in Leipzig, the holders are in pole position to qualify and need only to avoid defeat to do so while Croatia need the win to pip Italy to second, a draw puts them out virtually pending other results. Croatia surprisingly have the better record, only losing once to Italy, in their first meeting in 1942 and beating them 3 times including their only other tournament meeting in Kashima during the 2002 World Cup

Over on BBC Two, Spain face Albania in Düsseldorf needing only a draw to confirm top spot and a tie with a best 3rd place team from either of Groups A, D, E or F. A stunning win for Albania would send them through in 2nd if the other game ends in a draw. Form is against them however as they have lost all 8 meetings with Spain with this being their first clash in a major tournament

Day 11 ends like Day 10 did with more late drama as holders Italy scored a 98th minute equaliser to steal second spot from Croatia and set themselves up for a last 16 tie with Switzerland on Saturday. Croatia will now have to wait on results elsewhere to see if they can make it through as one of the best 3rds. Spain take top spot after ending the plucky run of Albania with a 1-0 win and will face a 3rd placed team on Sunday

Onto Day 12 which is the first of two nights of 4 games as Groups C and D conclude. First up at 5pm is Group D’s finale live across the BBC, on BBC One is the game between France and Poland in Dortmund. France need to win to go through as any slip up and a point or better for Austria could send them into the 3rd place spots. France have a better record in meetings with 9 wins from 17 games but in tournaments they have one win apiece, Poland winning in Alicante during the 1982 World Cup and France winning their last meeting at the last World Cup in Qatar 18 months ago

Over in Berlin on BBC Two is the second game between Netherlands and Austria. Both sides go in search of victory to send them through, indeed an Austrian win, if France fail to win, would win them the group. The Netherlands have the better of the H2H between the two with 9 wins from 19 games and have won both tournament meetings between the two, in 1978 in Cordoba at the World Cup and 3 years ago at the last Euros in Amsterdam

At 8pm it’s the Group C finale, both games airing across ITV, on ITV 1 it’s England’s final group game against Slovenia in Cologne. After two disappointing performances the Three Lions will be determined to end the stage on a higher note, they only need a point to progress with a win will absolutely guarantee top spot and a tie in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday, if they falter again they could face either another L16 game against Germany or worse either Portugal or the Group E winner. Slovenia need a win no matter what happens in the other game. Form is on England’s side with 5 wins from 6 meetings, including famously their last tournament meeting, also a final game, at the 2010 World Cup in Port Elizabeth

The other game in the Group, live on ITV 4, sees Denmark face Serbia in a win or bust game for both teams, Denmark can win the group with a win and an England draw or defeat but can as easily go out if they lose and Slovenia take a point from England. A draw in both games would give Slovenia an outside chance of a 3rd place spot if their game outscores the Danes. Denmark have a superior H2H winning all 3 meetings with Serbia and this will be their first at a finals

Day 12 over with and a day that started with promise ended on a damp squib. In Group D Austria surprisingly finished top of the group after beating the Netherlands, a result that knocked the Dutch down to third after France took second spot despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Poland who bow out of the competition, Austria now face the runner up in Group F next Tuesday, France play the Group E runners up on Monday.

From the excitement of those games came the tedium of the evening games as the dullest group of the tournament ended predictably with two 0-0 draws. England win the group but again questions will be asked after another tepid performance, they could possibly play the Netherlands on Sunday depending on results tomorrow. Denmark scrape by in 2nd despite drawing all 3 games and now face the hosts on Saturday while Slovenia could face either Portugal on Monday or the Group E winner on Tuesday

On to Day 13 which sees the group stages conclude for this year’s tournament. First up at 5pm on the BBC, is the Group E finale, the tightest group in the competition will all 4 sides level on 3 points. Slovakia face Romania on BBC Two in Frankfurt with Romania defacto group leaders meaning they only have to match what Belgium do to win the group, the Slovaks start in 3rd knowing a win could give them top spot. Romania have the better record in fixtures with 5 wins from 11 and this will be their first tournament meeting

Over on BBC One, most eyes will be on events in Stuttgart as Belgium face Ukraine. The Belgians were favourites for the group at the start but face the real possibility of elimination if they lose and one of Slovakia or Romania win. Ukraine start at the bottom knowing any result could send them through or packing for home. This will be their first ever meeting on the international stage

From there the group stage concludes at 8pm across ITV with the final games in Group F. On ITV One it’s Portugal vs Georgia in Gelsenkirchen. Portugal are already through to the last 16 and will be looking to be the only side to finish with 3 from 3, they won’t have it easy though against the debutants who have showed real heart and fight in their two games and a shock result coupled with a Czech defeat would send them through. They have only met on one previous occasion, Portugal winning a 2008 friendly

On ITV 4 it’s Turkey against the Czech Republic in Hamburg. Turkey start the game in second knowing they only need to avoid defeat to progress while the Czechs have to win to finish at least third. The two sides have an even H2H record with 5 wins apiece but Turkey have won both previous meetings at Euros, 3-2 in 2008 in Geneva and 2-0 in 2016 in Lens

Day 13 ends and with it the group stages for this year’s tournament, after 36 games we have our 16 finalists. The final spots were filled after tonight’s final 4 games, Romania surprised everyone by finishing top of Group E with a 1-1 draw with Slovakia, who qualify in third, Belgium limp home in second after a dour performance saw them draw 0-0 with Ukraine who exit the tournament. The bigger surprise came in Group F as Georgia, on their tournament debut, stunned 2016 winners Portugal 2-0 to progress through, Turkey took home 2nd after a 94th minute Cenk Tosun winner saw them beat the Czech Republic 2-1. Georgia’s win means that Hungary from Group A and Croatia from Group B are the third placed teams to exit the competition

There is now a 2 day breather for the competition (and this thread) before the knockouts begin on Saturday evening. This is how the line up looks for the last 16

Saturday 29th June
Switzerland vs Italy (5pm)
Germany vs Denmark (8pm)

Sunday 30th June
England vs Slovakia (5pm)
Spain vs Georgia (8pm)

Monday 1st July
France vs Belgium (5pm)
Portugal vs Slovenia (8pm)

Tuesday 2nd July
Romania vs Netherlands (5pm)
Austria vs Turkey (8pm)

After a 2 day breather, it’s time for day 16 and start of the knockouts where it’s all or nothing for each of the 16 teams, which, if some of the group games are to go by, will lead to some drama

First up at 5pm, live on BBC 1, it’s holders Italy against Switzerland in Berlin. Both sides finished second in their respective groups, with the Swiss earning one point more. The Italians have a pretty dominant record over their opponents in head to head meetings, winning 29 out of 60 clashes to Switzerland’s 7 and they have met in tournaments on 4 previous occasions, twice in the 1954 World Cup with the Swiss winning both, the 1962 World Cup with Italy winning and at the last Euros with Italy also winning en route to the trophy

Then at 8pm, on ITV, it’s hosts Germany against Denmark in Dortmund. Germany made it through the group stage unbeaten thanks to a late equaliser against the Swiss in their final game while the Danes scraped through the dour Group C by virtue of a cleaner disciplinary record in Qualifying oddly so will be seen as underdogs in a hostile environment. The Germans hold the stronger record in past matches, winning 15 out of 28 games to the Danes’ 8. In tournaments they are even stevens at 2 wins apiece, Germany winning Euros clashes in 1988 and 2012 while the Danes won in the 1986 World Cup and, famously, the Euros final in 1992

Day 16 ends and we will guarantee ourselves a new champion after holders Italy were dumped out in a surprise by Switzerland 2-0 while Germany weathered a storm (literally) and a fortunate VAR decision in their favour to see off Denmark by the same scoreline

Onto Day 17 then and the next 2 last 16 ties. First up at 5pm, on ITV, is England up against Slovakia in Gelsenkirchen. The Three Lions have flattered to deceive this far but, on their third successive last 16 appearance since the expansion, they will be hoping for a result similar to 3 years ago when they beat Germany rather than 8 years ago when they were embarrassed by Iceland. Slovakia got here largely thanks to their MD1 upset of Belgium and will be relishing taking another scalp. Form is on England’s side as they have won 5 out of 6 meetings though that one anomaly came the last time they met in a finals, a 0-0 draw 8 years ago in St Etienne

From there we stay on ITV at 8pm for the second tie of the day between Spain and tournament headline makers Georgia. Spain are the only 100% side left having won all 3 group games and will be looking to continue that form here. Georgia stunned everyone when, after two plucky performances, they stunned 2016 winners Portugal 2-0 to qualify for this round in their maiden tournament. Form would suggest a Spanish win, especially after they beat Georgia twice in qualifying by an aggregate score of 10-2 however Georgia’s only victory over Spain came 8 years ago ahead of Euro 2016 and, as shown thus far, they won’t lay down as easily

Day 17 ends and we have our first 2 quarter finals decided after another dramatic day. England were 90 seconds away from being Slovakia’s second scalp of the tournament until Jude Bellingham’s stunning overhead kick, Harry Kane then struck what proved to be the winner 42 seconds into extra time to spare blushes and set up a Saturday evening tie with Switzerland

Spain then booked their place and a tie with hosts Germany by surviving an almighty scare to end Georgia’s valiant debut with a comfortable 4-1 win in the end

On to Day 18 and the penultimate day of the last 16 round. First up at 5pm live on ITV it’s France against Belgium in Düsseldorf. The French cost themselves top spot, and an ‘easier’ tie at this stage after their final game draw with Poland while Belgium will be looking for a better performance after their lacklustre draw with Ukraine saw them snake through in second in their group. Belgium slightly edge the H2H between the two with 30 wins to France’s 26 (19 draws) but it’s been 9 years since their last win. They have met on 5 previous occasions at tournaments with France winning 4 including their only Euros clash in 1984

Following that it’s over to the BBC at 8pm for Portugal vs Slovenia in Frankfurt. The 2016 winners came through as group winners despite their stunning last matchday defeat to Georgia while Slovenia missed out by a fraction on finishing second in England’s group. This will be just the second time they’ve faced off, and the first at a tournament, will Slovenia winning that 2-0 in a friendly back in March

Day 18 ends with the first penalty shootout of the finals as Portugal scraped by Slovenia in the end despite a missed Ronaldo pen in Extra Time and a dreadful display of shooting by the Slovenians in the decider. Earlier France edged past Belgium thanks to a late own goal leaving the Belgian Golden Generation bereft of another trophy attempt. The two victors will now face each other in Hamburg on Friday night for a place in the semi finals

Onto Day 19 as the Last 16 comes to an end and we find out who heads to Berlin for the final quarter final game on Saturday. First up at 5pm on BBC One, it’s Romania against the Netherlands in Munich. Romania shocked everyone by finishing top of their group while the Dutch had to settle for 3rd in theirs after losing their final game to Austria. The Oranje have a stellar record against Romania winning 9 from 13 games with Romania’s only victory coming in a 2007 friendly. They have met once previously at the Euros, in Berne during Euro 2008 with Netherlands winning 2-0

The final game, on ITV at 8pm, sees Austria face Turkey in Leipzig. Austria, as previously mentioned, came from nowhere to steal top sport from France on the final group games by beating the Dutch while Turkey finished second to Portugal in theirs on goal difference. Austria have the slightly better head to head record between the two with nine wins to Turkey’s seven and one draw. This will be their first meeting at a major finals
