Euro2020 Knock Out Rounds

The gaffer did it again last night, but the dirty Portuguese have cost him a chance to progress his team further. I dont see how a team shorn of KDB and Hazard conjur up the win over a decent Italian team. Lukaku should get some success against the Italian CBs but if both his two creative players are out then his hands are tied.

Martinez looks like a tasty international manager, should England go for him once Martinez is done with Belgium?

If you believe scoring screamers and not conceding from 20+ shots is a sustainable way of winning knockout games than sure
Compare the Belgian side under Wilmots to their current team now, and you can see the improvements. It speaks volumes imo.

I don't think they're that much better

Hmmmm

They played in a very conservative way yesterday, for sure, but Portugal also set up to defend.

Tbh, had Rom been a bit more clinical with his decision making in the second half/the pitch not as awful in Seville, then they'd probably have won comfortably.

Belgium were dismal under Wilmots. I think Martinez has improved them. Don't think it makes him a great manager, but he's definitely got more out of the squad than Wilmots would have managed.

Has he though? They were in a cupcake group so that's not something that would have been a problem for Marc. I just think his two biggest wins are games where they've scored stunning goals and been miserably outshot otherwise. I've said this several times now but this team has winning a major trophy level talent so short of at least a final he's been a failure as Belgium manager.

Why? Genuinely asking, I think I like Spain but not totally decided if I want to bet it or not.

Well depends which Spain turn up, but Croatia are one of those teams which can generally just grind out results I think - hell, it got them to a World Cup final.

An early goal will open things up but it's going to be a proper midfield battle I'd imagine, in terms of players who all want the ball.

Just fancy Croatia to frustrate Spain. Think it's two easily matched teams - I'm not a betting man but tbh I think I'd be leaving this one alone!

Basing it on their WC run too. I don't think Wilmots manages that.

Oh yeah, they need to get into the final in this one for his tenure to be anywhere close to be a success so far, assuming he stays on for 2022.

I think the Italians were expecting Austria to play like they did in the first half and would need to be patient and eventually, they’ll get the first goal in the second half. Instead Austria played some good stuff going forward, been the better side this half, and that’s probably caught Italy out a bit. Still think Italy will come through in extra time though. Few of the Austrians looked knackered at the end
Mancini throwing all the subs out early won the match. Austria who probably has a good but thin squad didn't have this luxury. From the 80th min on they were skipping right by the Austrians.

IMO its probably good stragety to do this when its tied or you are losing, w/ 5 subs you can pretty much throw 1/2 a new squad out there. Its such an advantage if you have decent depth playing footie in the summer months.

I think he'll do the same against Belgium.
