Euro2020 Knock Out Rounds

The time for blaming managers is over. If England's players take responsibility, they have every chance to win this tournament. I say this as somebody living in Germany. Joachim Löw, who won a World Cup, made a Euro final, a World Cup semi-final, and two more Euro semi-finals in his stint, is regularly criticised here - but that does not preclude a lot of flak coming the players way. Toni Kroos, Thomas Müller, Kai Havertz - it does not matter who you are or what you have achieved, you are expected to take responsibility on the pitch whether your manager has forgotten to take his meds or is going through a delayed mid-life crisis or not.

My feeling, as a neutral, is that England have a better-balanced side than Germany have right now, but that Germany have outstanding midfield players with huge in-game intelligence. The German defence is a sieve. The German attack is led by people of dubious ability at his level. While Serge Gnabry has excelled at Bayern off the shoulder of Robert Lewandowski, he has struggled in this tournament for Germany. Timo Werner is broken. Leroy Sane will always make the wrong decision, has an entitled attitude, and is out of his depth at this level.

This Germany is eminently beatable. But you still got to show the character and personality - and intelligence - to do that. We hear a lot about the Man City players - but, on both sides, Foden, Sterling, and Gundogan have failed to show when the stakes were high in the CL. Gundogan will probably lose his place to Goretzka. That will give Germany more muscle in the middle. But they'll give you plenty of chances. It's up to the likes of Sterling and Kane to stand up when it matters. If they do, I think you'll win. This is not the traditional German steamroller. It's a chaotic, fragile thing capable of brilliance and comedy. Some of these Germany players are the kind who miss penalties. You have nothing to be afraid of except, perhaps, your own players' ability to stand up when it truly matters. The Germans will definitely do that. They're just not good enough in defence, particularly, to be serious contenders. And that won't be down to the manager (even if he does pick the wrong team and put Goretzka on the bench). It'll be because this generation of players were not good enough...yet.

They’ve drawn with Sweden and Poland and Croatia could’ve put them out yesterday had things gone slightly differently.

We also beat them in the nations league. They are not miles ahead of us.
they've also smashed 5 in both their last 2 games - when the heat has been on they have delivered. I was very impressed the way they just over ran croatia in extra time - will have been tough to deal with conceding 2 goals so late.

In the 2018 WC Southgate literally delivered England’s joint-best finish at a tournament since 1966.

England have had much better managers on paper in previous tournaments and delivered a hell of a lot less.
So let's see.

3 wins 2 draws and 2 losses.

The wins against Tunisia (in extratime), Panama and Sweden.

Stats from the draw against Croatia (a country with a population of 4 million people) in the semifinal

Attempts: 11-22
Attempts on goal: 2-7
Possesion: 44-56%

The main difference between the 2014 fiasco and the 2018 success was the luck in the Fifa World cup draw december 1st 2017 in Moscow.

I think Germany's superior midfield will be the key unfortunately. It's Rice and Phillips vs Kroos and Gundogan/Goretzka, as well as Mueller and Havertz dropping into the pockets. I also think this will be a big test for our defence. Although it hasn't conceded much the Germans will be throwing the kitchen sink at it.

Depends what you mean. England will win a fair share of games between the two but skillswise Spain are miles ahead. In the vast majority of games Spain will completely dominate the possesion and number of goal attempts much as in the nations league game that England won.

Yes, and while I think the German defence is really brittle, I have never been convinced by John Stones defensively. I expect Germany to have most of the ball, but England have the players to catch them on the break. How Kimmich plays could be decisive. If he is influential, Germany will create. If he has one of his less effective nights, they'll struggle.

Mind you, if somebody had said 48 hours ago that not a single side from the Group of Death would remain in the competition by Wednesday morning, they'd have been carted off by the men in white coats.

I know they got knocked out last night but Croatia I always thought punched above their weight, only 4 million people and always seem to have an least decent team
They've been great. Had they a better player than the number 7, Brekalo, who came on and was disastrous, they might have won yesterday too. Perisic was a huge loss.

Yeah I was thinking them too. Very good record considering their population. 1996 was their first ever tournament too I think

England's biggest danger if they win tonight is underestimating quarter finalists and semi finalist.
I have not seen a team that England are not capable of beating , likewise there will not be a team left that on there day could not beat England.
It's all about who wants it the most , which team has the fire in there bellies .
Unfortunately England tend to fall short when it comes to guts and determination.

Here's a thought: is winning the Euros ugly even winning the Euros at all? For example, remember when Greece won it playing like Pulis' Stoke? Sure, it means something to the fans of whichever nation wins it but does it go down as a timeless victory?

Of course, it's England that's got me thinking about this. I saw the news that Mount, Grealish and Foden could (I'm not sure how reliable David Ornstein is) all be benched and I thought to myself that Southgate is hell bent on shithouseing himself to victory. I'm probably sounding like a massive purist here but if England win the Euros in a shithouse manner, I feel like it wouldn't mean as much to me.
