Europa Conference League

Good wages and a World class manager with a huge reputation attracts players. Prestigious European game nights also attract players.

But I'm not sure the best players are that enamoured about jumping on a plane for a Thursday night game against whoever came 3rd in the Albanian league in Europe's 3rd trophy.

Did you read the big where I said about us playing selected teams? In reply to teh poster I quoted who mentioned those selected teams?

Disregard shown to the League Cup and FA Cup by who though? Not me, I'd bite your hand off to win either of those!
As would I, but that’s not the point. The League Cup is likely going to be binned off as a result of this increased Champions League.

Not by the big teams either. Only 3 teams outside the fabled 'big 6' have won it in the last 35 years, and one of them was us 26 years ago. It's a clueless take.

If you think the domestic cup competitions are held in the same regard now as they were in the 90s then it’s you who’s clueless I’m afraid.

And if you think the 90s was 15 years ago, you can't count.

Great argument.

90s, 00s. Same truth. The FA Cup and League Cup are not as valuable in the eyes of clubs or supporters as they used to be.

“Micky Mouse cup”

But yeah, it’s a “clueless take” to say the competitions aren’t taken as seriously.

No I think it's an important distinction. You gave the timeframe, I just responded to it. I don't think the way the FA Cup is perceived has changed at all from 15 years ago. If anything it's maybe gone back up in prestige in that time. It has gone down from 30 years ago though, no arguments there. But despite that, it's still seen as a worthwhile trophy. It used to be 'the big one' to fans, almost more important than the league, but now it isn't. There are extremely obvious reasons for that. And yet it's continually won by the big boys, and it continues to get big crowds and big viewing figures. It's certainly not a competition that nobody cares about.

Just swerve it, for want of a better word, and let’s concentrate on having a really good go at getting in the top four next season as well as the two English cup competitions.
We went as strong as we would for the 2 English cups this season. Drew the top 2 teams in the league and got knocked out .
We have a better chance of winning this if we get in .

Which was something I never said. But carry on.

I think we also have to acknowledge where we are as a club too. Short of someone coming in and doing a Sheikh Monsour (which could still happen with us, but I'm not sure it will) we need to look at clubs like Sevilla, who won about 10 trophies in just over a decade recently. They are often missed as the hipsters choice of teams doing well, but they just got into the habit of winning trophies of all sorts.

I get the argument that CL is more strategically important than a cup win. But I also think we need to try to have a go at winning what European trophies we are in. Our record in Europe post the 80's is pitiful really.

So what was the “clueless” comment for then ?
Well I wasn't really addressing it specifically at you, hence me not replying to you. I was agreeing with the basic principle made by the poster I was replying to, that the cups still mean something. Clueless was just a throwaway comment really, about the general attitude shown by some posters when talking about the competition and their inflated sense of our standing in football. In your case I would say using the word 'disregard' for the cups was a poor choice based on what you've said since. There isn't a disregard for the FA or League Cup, and as you've intimated that you never believed that to be the case, i'm not really sure what the issue is.

Another Mickey Mouse cup. I can see this being treated in the same way as the Intertoto in which the teams that end up in it, field reserve sides then get sanctioned by UEFA only for the thing to be abolished.
