European Football 2024-25

Premier League full of mercenaries, yet the European Leagues littered with some exquisite British talent now.

McTominay, Gilmour, Bellingham, L Ferguson, L Henderson, Lookman, Bynoe Gittens, Kane, Gallagher, Loftus Cheek, Abraham

All doing well overseas. It's great to see; instead of rotting away in reserves
A lot of clubs seem to go straight to spending money on mercenary type players instead of giving young players a run.

Yepp.

High profile names. There's no guarantee some of those I'd listed would have been good in the PL.

The likes of Hickey went away, earned their way and proved to be useful.

Ferguson has been a star in Serie A for a few seasons now. Would they have received a chance in the PL.

Young players getting away from the distractions that may have a bad effect on their football career helps them concentrate on learning their game. The problem could be that younger players are getting too much of a cash reward well before they`re even close to being the finished article. If the likes of a Tom Davies had made the choice of going on the continent to develop instead of staying at Everton and seeing his career grind to a halt, then having the option to come back to England.

Don't forget Ben Godfrey!

Hope you don’t class all of them as exquisite mate 😂

Forgot about him, believe he's kept a clean sheet in every game he's played in for Atalanta in Serie A this season (22 minutes).

That said, he's also played at the Bernabeu, so guess the jokes on us.
The last year we were in Europe we played Atalanta in the group stage. They had done sweet FA in their history and their ground was so bad they had to play their european games at a ground 80 miles away.
Fast forward a few years and they have been european regulars, winning Europa League and playing CL in a pretty much new ground. Hope our new ground is the start of us going in an upward direction.

This is a great example. And there's no reason why we can't do something similar if we have competent, committed owners - which we now appear to have. After all, they won a European trophy with Roma...

Ownership dictates 90% of possibility in football. The days of a genius coach taking an ordinary provincial club to glory like Brian Clough took Forest are over forever. You need the right ownership. It's also why Man United are in a death spiral right now.

It would be nice if we could get ourselves together and fill the void they are leaving at the top. I can see them not improving on the field for a while and if they go ahead with a new stadium it could hamper them bringing in new players.

Well, United are in a spiral. Gary Neville is calling for cultural change, but Gary, what do you think "Sir Jim" was? You've had your cultural change. The Glazers continue to suck that club dry. Long may their fangs continue to grow.

Liverpool are looking good for the title, but they will likely be losing some major players in the summer with big names out of contract. This might be a one-off title if they can even win this one.

Arsenal look to have plateaued. Arteta will start to feel the heat soon.

Spurs have gone full Spurs. I don't think it will take too much competence to get past them.

Newcastle look stuck. Villa are struggling with the twin fronts of league and Europe. Neither of these are uncatchable with good, sensible, strategic thinking and recruitment.

Chelsea could do anything - win the league or implode under Boehly.

And then there is the elephant in the room. Or rather, the 130 elephants in the room. City might not even be a PL club next term - but as unlikely as that is, a more likely scenario is the Pep years are coming to an end. What then?

There is nothing predictable about the upper echelon of the top flight any more. This is something new. Nothing seems pre-ordained or inevitable because there are too many shifting sands. In other words, an ideal moment for a sleeping giant to reawaken...
