I don't subscribe to the notion that the league was necessarily more competitive in the 80s than thoughout the 60s. And I certainly don't think you can categorically say that European success proves the point futher. The fact is, British clubs didn't take Europe as seriously back in that period and were actively discouraged by both the FA and the Football league. Despite that, between 1968 and 1973 English clubs won a European cup, 2 cup winners' cups and 6 consecutive Inter city fairs/UEFA cups. Indicating a strength in depth, ie a lot of teams that will push you every Saturday (as it generally was back then). So it's possible that the great Leeds team didn't dominate as much as Liverpool in the 70s and 80s because it was harder to dominate

At the end of the day, I don't necessarily think you're wrong. I'm playing devil's advocate because I don't think it's so black and white.
Yes, it's all subjective, of course, but one fact remains: the best teams in each subsequent era are almost invariably superior to the best teams in previous eras, simply because nutrition, technology, and medicine moves on. Today's Liverpool side would defeat the great Liverpool side of the 1980s - easily. But if you allowed Dalglish, Souness, and Rush the same technological advances, nutritional improvements, and medicine (alright, maybe not Jürgen's Juice...), then I have no doubt that all three of those improve the current squad? Why? Great players would be great players in any era. Ability is ability. Given a level technoogical/medical playing field, then it's all about ability. And they had it. The same applies to the best of our 1970 players. My overarching point, however, is that our 1970s squad had just a handful fewer players of that ability than the 1980s side. And that is a significant factor in why they achieved - let's be honest - significantly less than Kendall's side did.

I watched them both, first hand, and I disagree with you. As I have said previously, there was little to choose between the late 60's and mid 80's side. It's mainly an age thing, for me I rated the late 60's team slightly above the mid 80's purely because of that bit of magic they had but I fully understand somebody 10 or15 years younger than me going for the mid 80's, just time and place in your life.

Having said all that, it is just not correct to say that the late 60's team had less competition. The league was far more competitive then with several teams capable of winning honours.

In my opinion having seen them both, several times, there was little to chose between late 60's Leeds and and mid 80's Liverpool but I would put the Leeds team slightly ahead.

I have to ask if you're old enough to have seen the 1970 team. I'm not, so I can't really comment objectively on this last point
