I don't think it was. He scored more goals, but that was because he was playing up front. He's wasted when used as little more than a target man/battering ram.

His best runs of form have come in midfield. I loved watching Everton play with him and Gibson working together in early 2012.

I don't think he's ever had a good season, always in fits and bursts with him.

He was in the form of his life before that Greek pensioner took him out in the derby years ago, for me anyway.

Ronaldo made them well over 80 million back. It's really not fanciful to suggest Bale could shift half as much merchandise. 600k or so shirts to a team with hundreds of millions of followers, not sure how I'm 'dreaming'.

It didn't make them back over £80m, that figure was the revenue generated from shirts with Ronaldo's name on them, not their share of the net profit (which is split between the player, them & their kit manufacturer) & there's no way all of those sales were incremental anyway.

Don't forget Perez had to argue a case as to why his galactico policy was 'money well spent'. That's not to say that they've not see a decent return from Ronaldo in that regard, as they have. But to assume Bale would automatically generate a massive incremental rise in merchandising sales that justified his fee is fanciful imo.

I thought he was brilliant further forward for the first half of last season, and deservedly got plenty of plaudits. It wasn't just the goals, his all round play was excellent too.

I think for a team like us he can be more effective in that role due to our dearth of goal scoring strikers. Moyes would be an idiot to throw him up there with the likes of Rooney and Van Persie at his disposal though.

He was on fire going into that game. I was never too sure of him before then.

He'll always be a handful up front, but it still felt like a waste to me, even when he was scoring. You could get 8-12 goals and a few assists out of Peter Crouch - it isn't as easy to find a player who offers what Fellaini does in midfield.

I want to see him given the freedom roam, ideally with Gibson sitting and Barkley carrying on behind the striker.

Does anyone else feel as though Everton would have a better chance of making
a serious profit on Fellaini after a year
of him playing in midfield?

One of the reasons I'm loathe to see him go to United is that it's Moyes' fault he's now perceived as 10 goal-a-season target man.

Totally agree. The relatively very few teams in world football that could afford Fellaini dont play a brand of football that would utilise a big target man, so that's why we are kind of stuck.

The Everton defender Leighton Baines has asked his manager Roberto Martinez and the club's chairman Bill Kenwright to agree a deal to sell him to Manchester United, The Independent understands.
The left-back has been the subject of three bids from United over the summer, for £9m, £12m and as part of a joint bid worth up to £30m, including Marouane Fellaini, all of which have been rejected by Everton. It is anticipated that United will bid for a fourth time to sign Baines before the transfer window closes on Monday at 11pm.
Baines met with Martinez on the first day of pre-season to tell the new Everton manager that he wanted the club to negotiate a deal with United.
Since then Baines, 28, has not missed a training session when fit and has played in both Premier League games so far this season. He is in the squad for tonight's Capital One Cup second round tie against League One side Stevenage. Since that original meeting with Martinez, which followed United's first bid for the player, Baines has reiterated his desire that Everton try to agree a deal.
The England international has met with Martinez, on a number of occasions, and Kenwright. His position has not changed: he would like the opportunity to play for United, not least to play in the Champions League.
Baines' former manager David Moyes has prioritised the signing of the left-back since taking over at Old Trafford. His current left-back Patrice Evra has one year remaining on his deal. Baines has been at Everton since 2007 and has two years left on his existing deal.
