Everton. I hate you. Again.

Impossible to keep a clean sheet. Anyone who thinks this season will be anything but a relegation battle is deluded. Every team in this division has the ability and players to score against us and that’s worrying.

You mean like last season’s guaranteed relegation battle where we finished 8th? Wobble that head of yours mate and take the short trip from the bed to the toilet.

I think everyone’s just sick to their teeth about 1 win in 46 away to the top 6, and then a game like yesterday where Everton actually have a go and play pretty well and Arsenal looks very vulnerable and that win is there for the taking... and then the football gods conspire against them to make sure they still can’t get a result.

That was way better than getting drummed 5-0 but if it’s not one thing it’s another.

Arsenal 1996
Chelsea 1994
Liverpool 1999
Man City 2010
Man Utd 2013 (1992)
Spurs 2008

Especially embarassing when almost every other team will have had their day at one of these grounds recently. The likes of Swansea have won at Anfield, Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge, West Brom at Old Trafford. Never Everton though. Never.

Rank recruitment since Moyes has left us with a bottom half squad that Silva needs to rip up.

This, this, this.

And wow just look at the cash wasted in getting there. I read £300m on this forum...

The single value mostly missing in all players in that window is character. Whether you look at the top table clubs or successful survivors you'll see a spine of tough, season- long players.

Ranieri's Chelsea lacked this, but was close. Mourinho added a couple and the backbone of cech, Terry, cole, bridge, lampard, drogba, makalele et al and this backbone endured for nearly a decade.

Moyes built similarly, albeit within awful financial constraints, but the character and quality was built and endured.

Man Utd had it schmeichal, the nevilles, Bruce, Stam, irwin, Keane, cantona, giggs, Becks, scholes, etc around which top talent could come in and function well in shorter spells.

% of British & Irish players in those squads and arsenals earlier dominant years, ( which they failed to replicate once the back 4 and bergkamp moved on) is telling and its good Everton have an OK balance.

I think Lookman, Walcott, pickford, Coleman, and maybe holgate, Keane and davies can re-create that but not without the right leaders setting the tone for the snide and snarl missing right now.

big dunc, Cahill, weir, jags, Neville, lescott and gravesen etc. We need a bit of that.

the likes of Watford, Leicester, Bournemouth and Burnley are the best of the rest right now. Theirsquad profiles are similar to our last best spell (moyes and Martinez 1st year ).

I'd like to see a drastic cut to expensive overseas, signings and see the current lot toughen up a bit. But the warming signs are there. We could be villa... If FF can't produce the young profiles of players needed that's where we're headed.

You can't buy character, maybe a centre to forward here and there... great. But not character

Only watched the first half and end of the second, because I was scoffing a big lasagne that my mum had made when it went pear shaped. From that and the highlights of the goals, I thought it wasn't terrible. If only we had a clinical goal scorer (but that's stating the obvious) and their second goal had been called offside - also typical Everton , then things might be different.

I can see improvements every game. I think we'll click eventually. I even think the defence is starting to understand what's going on and how to work together. The problem with Silva's football system is that it takes time and considerable effort to be successful. I always said that I would judge after 10 matches, so he still has and is looking like he is earning my full support. Get some wins and we'll hopefully be up and away.

Other than that though, bah humbug.

There's money to made if you bet on Everton to lose away at the big 6.

What happened the lasagne?

Lasagna consumed. BIt was just bad parsing of sentence so fortunately the lasagne was scoffed without issues. Everton on the other hand, who knows what went on whilst I was in the other room eating - probably nothing good if they conceded 2 goals.

that is absolute horrific, for a team who has spent a good 10 years of that in/around the top 7

Most of those W's refer to Man City I imagine when they were awful as well.

It truly is the most depressing thing about Everton in the Premier league era. I don't think many of us have expected to win trophies regularly given our paltry outlay pre-Moshiri, but to routinely get smacked every year at away grounds that we just never win at is truly awful.

Think of some of the garbage teams that have won at some of these grounds too.

The 9 wins we've had are below with the teams final league position in brackets so it actually gives a false picture as 6 of the 9 wins came against teams that may be considered the top 6 now but finished outside the top 6 the seasons Everton beat them.

04-Dec-2013 Man United (7th)
20-Dec-2010 Man City (3rd)
24-Mar-2010 Man City (5th)
13-Dec-2008 Man City (10th)
29-Nov-2008 Tottenham (8th)
24-Feb-2008 Man City (9th)

Lots of those ‘Ws’ are when Spurs and City weren’t great. If you look past the Martinez win at Old Trafford there’s no other win there outside of Spurs or City and even those are now many seasons ago.

That is grim viewing.

Moyes was truly awful though in away games during his tenure,so negative and saw a point as almost as good as a win.

That’s probably the most annoying thing. I could take Everton being rubbish if we had some highs and lows in a season but at the moment there’s no highs. We don’t win away at the top 6, we don’t win derbies, we barely win away at all now. Every season is just an endurance. Even when we change managers they all end up playing exactly the same way, an utterly turgid 4231 or 433. Other teams go from bus parking managers to 3 at the back managers to rapid counter attack teams to 2 up top. We play exactly the same formation nearly every game. We’re just so utterly boring.
