The problem isn't the defence , well it is plus the midfield , but actually the real problem is Benitez.

Yesterday you saw what a proper , modern coach can do with a group of players that man for man is inferior on just about every metric to our squad.

I do t think they are inferior player for player , their lb gets in our team , both their rb are better than Coleman , Duffy gets into our cb position atm, their cm both walk into our side , apart from Pickford , DCL and gray, I don’t see any of our players being guaranteed to play in their team every week

I'd add Digne ( better than Cucerella) , Doucoure ( would look great alongside Bissouma ).

Pure. Fantasy.

We'll finish 15th-12th this season. Vultures will get round our best players. We won't be able to attract "quality" to replace them.

Meanwhile we're in football manager mode letting under 23s play regularly.

12th is fine if were recycling the squad.

What best players are you worried about leaving? They can be replaced as were seeing with Digne...

...not easy but other teams do it.

Agreed, but I'd sell Mina and Keane and possibly loan out Branthwaite (imo)

100% with a more experienced cb also, this would be the one to slip straight in straight away. We can then focus on getting a statement cb signing or a potential superstar as you call it .

Question is though , can you trust Rafael to do this ?

Branthwaite should be playing, I know he was ill yesterday. He should be partnering Godfrey and the rest as you’ve stated.

Michael Keane and Mason Holgate need to be sold. Weak mentality, can’t sniff out the danger. Honestly the only good thing I can think of out of the two is Keane can play a good long ball. They’re beyond [Poor language removed]. Sell them and bring in someone even half decent to pair up with Mina or Branthwaite.

Mina injuries + 18month contract
Keane utter donkey
Holgate fallen off a cliff.

Godfrey + Branthwaite to start if Mina is out and try and sell the 3 above and and bring a top player in.

He took over a team that finished with 59 points and were inside the top half for the entirety of last season. That’s a ‘fact’.
They won 3 of the last thirteen under Carlo including 5-0 loss to city. List at home to Sheffield Utd, Newcastle Burnley and Fulham or something like that
Not much better than this seasons form really

….it is amazing how stubborn he is.
It worries me because he seems to be more concerned about being proven right than making adjustments to get results. It's a certain kind of arrogant delusion. It's another reason why I never see it working with him as manager. We might scrape safety this season if he isn't removed but it's a risk and where do we go next season? How can he remain in place?
