Everton January 2022 Transfer Thread

Right so we're speaking strictly those players here then, your 19-21/22 year olds?

Mykolenko has played in the Champions League, won more trophies by 22 than Everton have in 26 years and he's a regular international player. What boat does he fall into?

Well I’ve never seen him play so I can’t tell you about his attitude but I guess time will tell. If he turns up and skulks about with a face on him like Lookman and Kean did then no, I wouldn’t put him in the young and hungry category just because of his age.

See my next post where I listed the starting XI from the other day.

Not sure your Leeds comment stands up either. We did them earlier in the season and really should have won. Did them last season away from home. And at home Ancelotti tried to go toe-to-toe with them and then got punished for that, albeit we were inches away from having two goals (still makes me sad that mega James one got disallowed but such is life).

What made Leeds hungry? It was Bielsa coming in and stamping his authority on it. Most of their squad were there when he arrived. So again, it's the manager that's the main thing here.

Did you watch the Leeds squad pre-Bielsa because I certainly didn't. Our players are regularly beaten to second balls, regularly pull out of challenges, that is nothing to do with the manager.

But is he "young and hungry"? He is, isn't he. In fact he's 'quick, young and hungry', which is exactly the phrase that Saint Domingo used.

Godfrey will be a good test case. Was he hungry just to make it back into the PL, or to get to a bigger club, then that’s it he just rests on his laurels?

Or does he have the desire to improve his game now that he’s under pressure, to show that he should be a starting centreback at this club, that he should be playing for England, and in fact he should be leading this defence and captaining this team to lift trophies.

Or is he happy playing left back and putting the odd big hit in to excite the crowd because mastering centre back might be a bit too much hard work a bit too uncomfortable?

We have absolutely no idea if either of these lads have that. Which is what I mean by I just think it's pointless jargon that fans spout out when they want to say what's wrong at Everton.

I fully agree that every player we sign should want to do that. But I think the vast majority of pro footballers do. Sometimes, especially with younger players, well a lot of the time, they stagnate and that's when good coaching and guidance comes in. I think it's fair to acknowledge that at Everton that hasn't been the case, by and large with a few exceptions with certain players, for the past few years.
I know nothing about Mykolenko

I've watched Patterson and think he's good. If you play in the old firm you are expected to win every week. Its a good place for anyone to learn.

Yes I did. I'm from the area and have grown up with Leeds fans my entire life, all my mates are Leeds fans or Liverpool fans. I watched them a fair bit.

They were bang average Championship players. Cooper is known by their fanbase as "league one Liam".

And has he been coached right?

I think he was coached well to an extent last year - i.e. how to play as a defensive full-back, how to be compact in defence - but then his positioning let him down a fair bit too.

This season he's totally regressed.

Coaching is a huge, huge part of any players' development.

I think both are going to be good signings, but not because they're 'young and hungry', mate. That's all. It means nothing. And if players aren't coached correctly then they can be as hungry to succeed as they like, there'll be a cap on where they can get.

Well let's ignore the quality side of things as that's irrelevant to this convo.

We are regularly outran and outfought you cannot deny that and I'm sure the stats back it up.

Best player on the park for us at the weekend? Anthony Gordon. Ignoring the two goals he was anyway because he chased everything, hassled everyone, got stuck in, that is desire and that is hunger to win. Does Michael Keane have hunger to win? Does he bollocks just strolls about.

Actually we aren't being. Christ I'm gonna quote Benitez but as he loves to say we're top of the running stats. But it's where we run and how we run.

Using the Leeds example, they are the fittest side going. Albeit, it's now gone a bit to far with the Bielsa model and that's what happens with him given he wants a small squad, the headcase.

But the first thing Bielsa did was go in and get Leeds extremely fit. Fitter than any other team.

Benitez got Everton fit in the summer, that's fair to say, too. But he has us camping in a shape and not pressing so teams can just knock it about us. When a player does then have that desire to close down, the others don't go with him. So what's the root issue? Coaching, tactics etc or a lack of desire?

I'm not disagreeing with you on Gordon and Keane. But when we signed Keane, we signed a player who was 'up and coming' and looking to make the next step in his career, didn't we.

Lookman absolutely 100% was not hungry. See also Moise Kean.
Aye possibly so. He's probably a player who needed a really good man manager/coach to get it out of him.

He was bombed out by Koeman for having a bad game v Boro in his 4th appearance for the club, then Allardyce insisted he went to Derby and then Silva had the coaching but none of the man management. Ironically I bet Ancelotti would have done wonders with Lookman. He's that type of manager and that type of player.

So again, what's the issue here? The player, or Everton's atrocious lack of forward planning or coaching or patience?

I know at this point it's firmly established that our squad incredibly lackluster, but I still find it shocking that it's so woefully deficient. We seriously need at least three more players beyond the two defensive backs. A definitive defensive Midfielder is crucial as Allan is ultimately a box to box Midfielder with diminished mobility, another CB that isnt a calamity and provide some guidance and leadership on the pitch in regards to the youth, a winger or advanced playmaker is required as well. The rottenness of the squad just demonstrates how inept the ownership has been

Well Gordon has been given a chance when he was frozen out last season.
It’s only in the past 6 weeks or so that Benitez has preferred him to Iwobi, imagine playing Iwobi ahead of Gordon. Benitez has only given Gordon his chance because he had little choice the fact that he was so obviously superior to Iwobi has kept him in. He was also forced into using Simms and Dobbin against Chelsea, but, as soon as he is available again, his game changer substitute on Sunday was, wait for it, Solamon Rondon.
