Yeah I get your point. I'm not sure there's much more indicative of just how far we've fallen than debating whether or not signing a squad player from a [currrently] 19th placed and previously relegated team is a good idea or not. Jesus wept.
It’s where we are mate and just need to hope we can drag ourselves out of it .

If were looking mid-long term:

GK: Pickford / ??? / Tyrer
LB: Mykolenko / Nkounkou
CB: Branthwaite / ???
CB: Godfrey / ???
RB: Patterson / ???
DM: ??? / ???
CM: Doucoure / Onyango
LW: Gray / Gordon
SS: Richarlison / Dobbin
RW: ??? / ???
CF: Calvert-Lewin / ???

8 Needed
1 × GK
2 × CB
1 × RB
2 × DM
1 × RW
1 × CF

5 Out of contract in summer
Delph
Sigurdsson
Tosun
Kenny
Lonergan

3 Release in summer or next year
Coleman
Begovic
Townsend

9 Players to move on
Mina
Digne
Holgate
Keane
Gomes
Davies
Allan
Gbamin
Iwobi

Ideally this window we bring in CB DM RW

We need to also move on 4 or 5 players from that bottom list.

If we can move players out for fees then it could be a turning point.

I don't know much about him but I like the idea of the potential.

Everton in race to sign influential Derby midfielder Knight
Rafael Benitez's Everton are one of a host of Premier League clubs hoping to sign Derby County midfielder Jason Knight in January, according to Football League World.

The 20-year-old has 18 months left on his contract at Pride Park and despite being a key player for Wayne Rooney's side, may have to be sold to help the Rams' dire financial situation.

The Toffees are joined by Wolves, Crystal Palace, Leicester, Leeds, Burnley, and Newcastle in the race to sign the Republic of Ireland international, who's almost at 100 appearances for Derby, which is described as an "incredible achievement for the young attacker”.

Also we’ve had links to O’brien a midfielder from Huddersfield. O’hare a midfielder from Coventry. Johnson the young attacker from Forrest. John Buckley another young midfielder at Blackburn.

Definitely looks like we’re scouting the championship quite hard

Does rather put into perspective how bare the larder really is. We have some decisions to make this summer as well, with Pickford and Richarlison down to two years remaining and nearly every other meaningful contract coming up the following summer.

One way to look at this is that we have eighteen months to either entice the players we want to build around to extend, or burn the whole thing to the ground and start over. We haven't done ourselves any favors by running down Mina and Davies, for whom we might otherwise be able to recover at least something.

Sooner or later, we have to start selling players from a position of strength and using the proceeds efficiently if we want to be competitive. Otherwise, we won't be able to afford young prospects.

It's even worse than he says because Godfrey and Doucoure aren't actually good and Gordon and Branthwaite (I rate both before anyone starts) have proven nothing.

….I think Dobbin should be added to your out of contract category.

Simms may be in there in one of the forward roles.

Re Pickford and Richarlison's contracts:

We have Delph, Sigurdsson and Tosun all out of contract in the summer. They currently earn around £240k per week combined.

We can afford to extend Pickford and Richarlison by two years each, and I'd like to think that the club is already preparing the opening offers for negotiations to start in March.

If we can sell a big earner or two, like Mina, Gomes or Iwobi, then that's cash added to the balance sheet too but it's only wage space that's needed to extend existing contracts.
