Everton January 2025 Transfer Thread

….one thing to factor into ‘keeping your best youngsters’ is that it’s nigh on impossible these days to keep hold of them if they want to leave, even with bumper contracts.

Wouldn't be naive or dogmatic about it mate, there will always be players moving on and id accept that. I think you make it as difficult as you possibly can to extract them though and be paid a premium for it.

While you are progressing and moving up the league i think you get to a more natural point of not loosing them, for example, Villa and Spurs now recruit better young players then they sell - granted there will be a Grealish or Kane sold at the right time, but thats done when they have given some years of service to the club, progressed it and still command a huge fee. Our approach up to now is sell someone like Gordon about 12 months from making his first team debut, extracted easily and arguably worth double - certainly more then what we received for him now.

Think TFG approach to recruitment is going to be interesting.

I found the terms they used in the overarching goals of strategic investment in recruitment in the men's team thoughtful. We are an oddly positioned club in the market in terms of attracting players that need to be combatted and we simply cant make the same mistakes we did in the past.

Strategic investment what does it mean?

Something to be avoided in my opinion - targeting established players at higher finishing clubs, who are attracted to come here just for a high paying salary - Minas, Gomes's, Schneiderlin's, the list goes on and on. Those players tore the guts out of this club on and off the filed on big contracts phoning in there careers here in the main getting contracts way beyond their worth. Our heads cant be turned by high profile names coming from Barca or whoever.

Secondly investment doesn't have to be in, in comings, what about investing in our own young players, in the course of the last 30 years we have sold players of the quality of Rooney, Ball, Jeffers, Stones, Barkley, Lookman, Robinson and Gordon. We still have Branithwaite - strategic investment for me also includes investing in the best of our youth. Id be targeting giving Branthwaite a bumper new long term deal. We need to get away from the mindset that our young players will be sold two years after breaking into the first tea, and being a transfer kitty.

Thirdly there needs to be a long term approach to recruitment, we cant be in a position we have been in most seasons were the squad is unbalanced, two seasons ago we didn't have a striker, last season we didn't have a right winger, this season we don't have a covering left back, there needs to be a five year plan to recruitment and positions - not just scrambling around planning for the year, doing deals we can do rather then players wed optimally want and hoping it all sticks and people settle quickly.

Lastly we have to invest in the academy, we have to produce more players then we need, we have to recruit and compete for the best at smaller clubs and bring here younger and cheaper, we have to over do this. We have to think of the academy as player production pipeline and revenue generator - in the same scope that City and Chelsea do.
I'd agree with all that.

I don't want to see us selling our stars either but that is something else that will happen if the price is right, if we have to do it then go all Daniel Levy on it.

We became a bit of a joke in the market, offering a cosy semi- retirement home on inflated wages for players that became burdens for 3,4,5 years with no sell on value. Thelwell did a little better in that respect but it was absolutely stark the squads of mediocre players we had, that we simply couldn't shift because of their wages.

I've said it before but I don't mind at all if the bigger clubs come calling for our players, it means we have quality in the side. €50m for Onana was decent in the circumstances but we might have got even more if we hadn't needed the cash desperately, and he is no elite player.

We have to become near to self sufficiency with transfer spending which TFG can then boost through turnover growth.

The other thing is we have to focus on U-23 players and expanding scouting networks on a global footing, particularly in South America and Asia, as well as continental Europe. There isnt sufficient value in the domestic market for clubs burdened with PSR restrictions. We have to be signing players for £10-20m and even less not when they are twice and three times that value.

Hopefully we will be able to bring in players that can have much more of an immediate impact as well. NDiaye has been ok in that regard, but it's been a long, long time since we signed anyone that went straight into the side and made a real difference in an offensive position.

Its an interesting point on becoming a joke in the market mate. Probably by players looking for big contracts, semi retirement etc - but also clubs like Spurs, Newcastle, Villa, in recent seasons coming in and as you say offering prob base just about fair deals knowing our necessity as opposed to us strategically selling for our improvement. Another question for the TFG if we want to compete with say Newcastle, Spurs and Villa - should we be selling our best players to them.

There is a job of work for the TFG to repair our reputational damage and profile in the market.

I am hoping that we leverage TFG’s existing network in France and Italy to bring in value signings…

I could see Enzo Le Fee coming on loan & Adrien Truffert signed on a discounted fee due to his drop in form this season due to a change of formation (hes a left back being used as a wing back).

Would be very happy with those two and funds used on a winger.

I'm just hoping the club doesn't employ a let's extend a few contracts because it's cheaper than buying new players approach. I don't think we'll see the back of all those we want to see the back of sadly.

Depends on how much the club have to spend in the summer & what work can be done in Jan.

As things stand we'll be down to 14 players including Dixon & Armstrong.

We'll need 9 new signings of which 1 will have to be a backup keeper as Virginia has made noises that he wants to be a starter.

So, 8 new players.

I wonder if Gana, Young and Doucoure will be kept on for the numbers on lower 1 year extensions.

That would leave 5 players needed for a 23 man squad.

Thats a decent number to aim for over 2 windows and points to us aiming for quality if we can also add some loans.

The following season we may have younger players coming through to replace the guys on 1 year extensions and new loans.

Didnt we before mate?

We got tonked if my memory is right.

Was it Chelsea away last year.
My memory isn't as good as yours but even if you are right I don't call one game against one of the better teams giving it a real go.

Lining up ....

Pickford

O'Brien/ Tarkowski/ Branthwaite

Patterson or Dixon / Gueye / Mangala / Ndayie/ McNeil

DCL or Beto / Broja

gives us much better attacking options.
