Everton January 2025 Transfer Thread

I think Iceland was a decent player for us, just not £45m player. If memory serves I think our opening bid was something like £25m, so to be negotiated up to nearly double, was peak Moshiri. We were kids that had been starved of food under Kenwright, who were given the keys to the sweet shop.

The Salah mention was just a comparison.

Fair enough.

My argument is that players like Sigurdsson or Richarlison are going to cost 40 million pound plus, and the fact that we wasted 20 million on Klaassen doesn’t change that.

Jack Harrison has a market value in excess of 15 million. Leicester came close to paying 20 million for him in January 2023. They had a bid accepted and a medical took place.

Salah is not a 36 million pound player. He’s a £120 million pound player that the RS got for 35. Similar to Branthwaite being a 60 million pound player that we got for about one million.

Bargains can be had, although they are few and far between. So I don’t think we got mugged off with Sigurdsson tbh. He was definitely worth two Klaassen’s, or a Klaassen, Bolasie and Schneiderlin all put together.

We aren’t going to be able to compete if Everton want to continue paying 10 - 20 million for crap players, whilst Bournemouth, Brighton and Wolves are dropping 40 million on forwards.

Of course, it’s not just about spending money, but you are operating as a small club if you become too scared to spend.
Sigurdsson was poor value for the money, it doesn't mean he was necessarily a bad player. 45 million for a 28 year old who flopped for Spurs is not good value.

We won't be able to compete if we start paying +40 million for mid table players on the downsides of their careers.

Ridle Baku (RB) with only 6 months left on his deal probs going to Leipzig for €2.5-5m. These are the sorts of deals a PSR-shackled side like ours needs to find.
This is where my main frustration is of the last few years. I get the limitations Thelwell has had with PSR, but there hasn't been any smart signings for small fees. The types of players the likes of Brighton and Bournemouth seem to routinely pick up. Mitoma cost Brighton £2.5m.
Our scouting network seems to be restricted to players who have failed at top half premier league sides or over-inflated fees for players from Europe who generally make no impact.

Agree there is a snobbery in our recruitment there is a world of players out there...

And this is where we never really know about the dynamics between DoF and managers. All of our previous incumbents make grand claims about players they wanted to bring in but managers/owners blocked them. Dyche seems hellbent on ‘Premier league experience’, so we have no idea if Thelwell is suggesting young, exciting players and the manager is just saying no. It’s all seems so disjointed.

Can't recall if the same summer but they also got Mane for same price we got Bolasie.

They were in the CL, it's easier to recruit motivated players. We were not, we felt we needed to overpay for experienced players to get us there, which is a poor strategy.

The issue with most of Moshiri signings was we just paid the big price to try and speed up the transfer to break into the top 4.

Stupid stupid spending for players who didn't really improve us that much.

No 10 should have been told nah see you in January once Swansea said £45m because they team was woeful and bound for relegation.

we should avoid trying to buy another team's talisman and captain really. That's asking for price hikes
