Everton January 2025 Transfer Thread

Here's the thing for me, this transfer window was weirdly enough one we had a distinct advantage over other clubs, most clubs across Europe and this league 'spent up' what they had made available by their users during the summer. As did we (nothing basically 😂), however we kinda had e been taken over by owners you would hd e hoped would put serious investment into the playing squad. Doing so now although a more restricted pool of players and with some being slightly over costed due to scarcity you are competing against a small handful of clubs - most with restricted budgets.

Yeah can wait until the summer with a lot more players available, but with every single club now reset in terms of spending capacity.

Yes you may pay more now to get say for example a Diarra out of Strasbourg now etc, but come summer it doesn't matter his price may drop a few million if you're now competing with 7-8 clubs instead of 0-1 for him. It's a false economy.
I thought we were restricted by PSR more than anything else - im not sure it is just 'don't buy in Jan due to value for money'.

He signed for them this season and is open to moving to look for more game time.

I get you REALLY want McAtee but there hasn’t been a single link to him yet (would be great if so). Maybe taking a slightly more open minded view of a realistic target that we have actually been linked with might help to dampen the almost inevitable disappointment of mcatee not joining us by Monday?

He would improve our midfield massively, he would push doucoure out of the 10 and would give the defence the out ball they desperately need in the absence of a dcl style striker which again we probably will not sign by end of the window

Fair enough mate, I just don't really rate KDH that highly and I'm massively wary of anyone whose had that big move on good money and then at 27 moves back down the pyramid - seen it backfire way too often and ending up stung by player just shoot to take a long contract and lack any ambition after - I don't know if this speaks to KDH he may be driven like Barry, just I think it's a huge risk on past evidence here.

Yeah I'm all on on Mcatee, but I'm self aware enough to realise it's me hoping we do a deal that's a possibility rather any true belief we will do.

Gordon is absolutely miles better than McNeil, and he allows Newcastle to press high and counter quickly. McNeil hits a decent corner and can strike a ball sweetly, but is a Championship player in most other regards.

(Albeit one that this team needs given the paucity of attacking ability)
I agree that Gordon is far better at pressing higher and very useful on the break due to his pace. However, I personally don't particularly rate him in terms of actual ability and talent. He isn't any where near a Rooney or even a Barkley in that regard.

He remains a poor finisher. Most of his goals are similar to Raheem Sterling at Man City when he would tuck in and tap in from his flank. Other players in worse teams would love to massage their stats in this way.

If his fitness and pace were taken away I doubt he wouldn't even be playing in the Premier League.

However, I give him great credit as he's on the face of it, a very average footballer but through discipline and hard work he has developed and got the most out of himself. He's the type of player I expect to burn out and regress quickly once he is unable to rely on his fantastic conditioning and pace.

I'm not claiming McNeil is Messi but I think his delivery from set pieces, shooting outside of the penalty area and arguably his finishing, are all better than Gordon. McNeil is arguably a better passer than Gordon as well who really relies on his pace to influence a game.

Another comparison since 2021/22:

Gordon
121 games
25 goals
17 assists

Bowen
127 games
39 goals
25 assists

And that's Bowen playing in a pragmatic David Moyes side as well.

Gordon's value is basically his age and how long he remains free of injuries to not slow down his impressive pace.

Surprises me there is no other winger lined up we have known we needed one for months and with Mcneil out and Harrison off form, even more pressing. Knocked back Nuamah but no alternative seemingly, very odd. Clearly priorities changed by injuries but we still lack pace. Best solution would be a mobile forward who can play accross the front line.
Harrison is not out of form that's him normally , what you see is what you get unfortunately

Bowen is clearly a better player than Gordon, but at the same point it's kinda weird arguing that Gordon relies hugely on pace and without it he's not that good, because, he actually has that pace.

It's like arguing Owen wasn't that good without his pace when he had it, only be ones relevant once the pace is gone.

Best player I've seen live was Kanchelskis who relied on pace massively, still at one point one of the best players in on the world imo.

Thelwell joined Everton February 2022

We signed Maupay in the summer of 2022

Your defence of his record is a little baffling.

I’ve said myself I think he’s done a reasonable job in the circumstances but he’s hardly faultless is he??

You, me, nobody in here truly know which players were 100% his. To say otherwise is speculation and disingenuous (despite what Bobble says). There’s zero chance anyone comes through the door without him having a certain degree of sign off, I promise you that.

I believe the bobble. IBWT ;)

Aside from Beto and Maupay there are no permanent signings that havent been worth the money signed by Thelwell.

Arguably the profit he would be able to generate and hit rate should be very high compared to his peers
