Everton January 2025 Transfer Thread

I don't trust Thelwell on his own, his record shows that he is unable to find gems in the market. The deals he has done seem to fit a hustler rather than a seasoned merchant. He needs some wins on his side. None of the players he has brought in have made Everton better or even appreciated. But I trust Moyes in conjunction with the current team.

Are you on crack?

I agree that Gordon is far better at pressing higher and very useful on the break due to his pace. However, I personally don't particularly rate him in terms of actual ability and talent. He isn't any where near a Rooney or even a Barkley in that regard.

He remains a poor finisher. Most of his goals are similar to Raheem Sterling at Man City when he would tuck in and tap in from his flank. Other players in worse teams would love to massage their stats in this way.

If his fitness and pace were taken away I doubt he wouldn't even be playing in the Premier League.

However, I give him great credit as he's on the face of it, a very average footballer but through discipline and hard work he has developed and got the most out of himself. He's the type of player I expect to burn out and regress quickly once he is unable to rely on his fantastic conditioning and pace.

I'm not claiming McNeil is Messi but I think his delivery from set pieces, shooting outside of the penalty area and arguably his finishing, are all better than Gordon. McNeil is arguably a better passer than Gordon as well who really relies on his pace to influence a game.

Another comparison since 2021/22:

Gordon
121 games
25 goals
17 assists

Bowen
127 games
39 goals
25 assists

And that's Bowen playing in a pragmatic David Moyes side as well.

Gordon's value is basically his age and how long he remains free of injuries to not slow down his impressive pace.

….its not ‘massaging stats’ to get on the end of crosses from the other flank, its desire, technique and hard work. Lampard made a career of it from central areas, I love seeing wide players with that commitment. Sterling was fantastic at doing it.

From watching Gordon in his Academy days he scored plenty from 20 yards, I used to refer to them as ‘curly wurly’s’ because he’d come in from the left flank and curl them into the top corner. Some of his finishing at Newcastle has been very decent, scored a fine goal with his left foot across the keeper in the past few games.

Speed is clearly an attribute, dodgy hamstring might ultimately impact him but there’s more there than you credit him for. In terms of market value, I expect his market value is at a different level to McNeil.

Here's the thing for me, this transfer window was weirdly enough one we had a distinct advantage over other clubs, most clubs across Europe and this league 'spent up' what they had made available by their users during the summer. As did we (nothing basically 😂), however we kinda had e been taken over by owners you would hd e hoped would put serious investment into the playing squad. Doing so now although a more restricted pool of players and with some being slightly over costed due to scarcity you are competing against a small handful of clubs - most with restricted budgets.

Yeah can wait until the summer with a lot more players available, but with every single club now reset in terms of spending capacity.

Yes you may pay more now to get say for example a Diarra out of Strasbourg now etc, but come summer it doesn't matter his price may drop a few million if you're now competing with 7-8 clubs instead of 0-1 for him. It's a false economy.

I think this is very fair. In general it's a good move to be counter cyclical. If nobody is buying, it's often a good time to buy. There are clubs who need to sell.

I can get the argument that it's a hard market, there's a lot more panic around etc, but I also think for astute teams there's probably a big opportunity that isn't properly utilised in football much.

Even if you think about it, there's a lot of opportunities for tea s to maximize PSR in January by selling too.

They'd sell him for about a 4-5m profit in fact without a second thought, as you could bring in any 22yo with ok physical ability who'd score as many in that league.

They are clearly just trying it.

What I hope we don't do, is get fixated on it. You put an offer on kf what he's worth, and give them a deadline, say 10am and move on. There have to be some other players on the list in the "punt" space, for clubs who won't try and hold us over a barrel.

Let's put it this way, I suspect Rangers would regret not having say 8-10m more than we would not having the player.
