That would depend on formation and injuries which have changed quite a bit latelyOut of curiosity where do people think Grealish would play?
On the left, right?
So I take it that means we sold Rico?

I like Grealish a ton but I don't really see a way he and James can play at the same time. Maybe it could be done but I don't think we have the players to build something around them that can do it.
Grealish is a very good player, but for me I don't want that type of personality at our club. I want our players to embody what the club stands for. Maybe I'm being judgy as I don't know the guy, but IMO he doesn't have the best public image and therefore not a good role model. I think our club stands for more.I like Grealish a ton but I don't really see a way he and James can play at the same time. I agree fixing that third midfield spot and getting someone in like Szoboszlai is something we need to do. But I don't think Grealish can do it in the PL. He isn't good enough without the ball. Or at least he wasn't when Villa tried to do it with him at the start of last season. And the reason they've gone and gotten Barkley is because they know from last season that Grealish has to stay out wide left.We aren't signing Grealish regardless but that type of player is needed for our midfield.
Grealish isn't a winger, but that role off the left does suit him. But, if Villa had better wide players, they could easily play him on the left of the midfield three - a bit like how Mount plays for Chelsea, and probably where him or Grealish should play for England.
Their role would be the ball carrier - get the ball in our half and carry it 30 yards forward.
We have very few players who do that naturally. Szoboszlai is that type of player we should be in for (know he's off to Leipzig). Athletic, skillful, strong and creative. Our midfield desperately needs that - arguably I'd say more than it needs a natural sitter as there are ways around that - one of them is having players to keep hold of the ball.
So, in that sense, you could definitely fit that Grealish kind of player in a team with James. Indeed, if we did go for Isco - not sure we will - then I think his role would be as the left player in the 4-3-3, and his job would be to move the ball upfield on the run.
James doesn't do that - never has. He's more of a player who finds pockets of space and picks a cross/pass/shot. Isco, at his best a few years ago, was certainly a ball carrier. Whether he is now is up for debate.

For me Grealish is at a level on that LW that you don't bother messing with it. If you're signing him the price and ability level means you build around him.
I mean I think you could play him as a true #10 with two guys behind him to free him up in the center, but that still precludes using James at the same time as he definitely can't play that RW spot and actually have to get up and down and hold width. But as a box to box type with a player next to him like Villa went for with him and McGinn I think at this point at least it leaves you too open in the middle, whether you've got a real threat on the left instead of El Ghazi or whatever or not.Hmm, I think it's a bit of both, though.
Villa don't exactly have a Richarlison playing on the left, giving Grealish another option. So I get your point about him being bogged down there but the better options a player like that has around him, the more it frees him up.
All academic, as he's not coming here.
