But he's played every game he's been available for bar the Utd match.

Holgate was probably our best performer at the back last season, and is clearly Carlo's first pick.

We needed another CB so we had four options (plus Branthwaite). Remember we went the first 7 games being one injury away from Digne having to play CB full-time.

Buying Godfrey also gives us a succession plan. If Mina doesn't up his game then next year he'll probably be sold, as he'll have two years left on his deal.

Having Godfrey with a year under his belt in that situation is a good progression plan.

Look at Leicester with Soyuncu.

The lad hardly played at all in his first full season with them.

He got a year's experience with the team, playing the odd match. Granted he got a bit of an injury but he'd been playing full on in the Bundesliga before his move.

Leicester sold Maguire and the replacement was there and ready made.

Not everything has to be a rush job. Just like shoehorning Godfrey or Holgate into holding midfield isn't necessarily the answer either.

I'd like to see us try a back three with both Godfrey and Holgate in there, but it would require work on the training pitch and for us to stick with it.

Get what you are saying but Leicester can afford to do that as they finished 5th and have a decent defence.

We finished 12th and are leaking goals - for £25 million I wanted someone to come in and partner our best CB - not be sat on the bench when Braithwaite could have done that and that £25 million got us a starting CM to replace Gomes/Siggurdsson or another forward to replace Kean/Tosun (or even a new GK better than the current clown we have).

If he isn't playing its a poor deal all things considered when the starting 11 still has 2-3 gaping holes.

Leicester bought Soyuncu in 2018 when they finished below us?

They didn't finish 5th the season they sold Maguire. They finished below us IIRC. And the season they'd bought Soyuncu they'd finished around mid-table.

But the thing is, Godfrey won't be sat on the bench all season.

At the time he was signed - at the time he made his debut against the RS, too - we had two fit CBs (Mina and Keane). Plus, Gomes had started well and people were actively calling for Gylfi to get a chance in midfield too.

As we have seen and both banged on about at the other ends of the pitch, injuries and suspensions happen, as could COVID quarantines. We need options and we do have those at least at the back.

I'm really not sure how you can say he's "not playing" when he's sat out one game he's been fit for while he's been here.

Leicester had a settled defence with Maguire & Evans though hence they signed the Turkish lad as a decent enough back up - our CB situation was and still is that we have one decent CB (Keane or Holgate at different points over the last 18 months) and needed a commanding top drawer CB to come in and partner one long term.

To suggest we have done that is false as Godfrey as you say is more a prospect signing yet we already have 2 'prospects' in that position in Holgate & Braithwaite so why bring in another? Surely either bring in a top drawer CB or leave it/bring in a cheap loan to cover the injuries at the time and spend that dough on addressing one of the CM/forward/GK/RB positions that are thin on the ground/needing an injection of quality.

Its just a baffling signing to me if Holgate and Keane will be first choice going forward.

Mate, he'll play 25 games this season, barring injury.

There's nowt to worry about with it.

If he'd have played the other day and we lost 3-1, people would be asking why he played instead of Holgate.

I'm sure the club signed him with a plan. Part of that was having four options so that one injury did not mean having Branthwaite - a player with 3 PL apps - as our only other option.

I got the need for another CB but not when it means we have 3 competent CB's on the bench whilst we have Tosun as back up at CF, Iwobi at LW, no one at RW, Siggurdsson at CM & Kenny at RB.

Baffling to me unless we were bringing in a Koulibaly/Van Dijk monster type CB which we never.

Many clubs looking at Upemcano who's up and coming or already established -- we certainly should be

I mean, we needed both. They should not have been mutually exclusive to each other and that's where we can both agree.

But, that doesn't mean there should be a need for Godfrey to come straight in over a player who was our best defender last season, either.

Maybe he should have played the other day, to allow Holgate to ease back into things. Maybe he should play in midfield, to sure it up, though I don't see Carlo doing that rightly or wrongly. He will get games, though, 100%.

End of the day, he's a player who was part of a pretty crap defence last season. He's got talent and potential, that's clear. We've signed him on a long-term deal and he'll be a part of what we build moving forward.

Four games into his Everton career. He's played two, missed one from injury and was on the bench for the other.

Problem is mate gone are the days you could lump someone in the ressies for a few games to get up to speed.

Only way a player gets match fitness nowadays is by getting minutes on the pitch.

I still think Godfrey deserves a chance at CB - we as a club can not be spending £25 million on a 3rd/4th choice CB when we cant even qualify for europe these days.

Until he has one bad game then you'll be at the front of the queue demanding we get rid and bring someone new in.

Holgate was fantastic last season there was talk of city coming in for him and him getting an England call up. He comes back from injury, is thrown straight into the side against united and because he doesn't have a worldie he's not good enough according to you.
