Copa America Centenario Final: Argentina vs. Chile start time, TV schedule and live stream via Royal Blue Mersey

usa-today-9352550.0.jpg

Everton’s Ramiro Funes Mori could lift the trophy

The Copa America Cetenario comes to a conclusion tonight. It has been a bizarre competition which was held entirely in the United States in front of half-full stadiums and only a portion of the teams really putting their best foot forward.

The US took forth in the tournament and there is talk about having the Copa on American soil more in the future.

But tonight is all about Argentina and Chile. Lionel Messi has had a phenomenal run of form despite dealing with some injuries at the start of the Copa. His free kick against the US earlier in the week is still unbelievable.

As far as Everton is concerned, Ramiro Funes Mori has been omnipresent in Argentina’s back line and has looked impressive while doing so. Maybe tonight he can get on the scoresheet?

Onto the game…

Euro 2016: Round of 16 start times, TV schedule and live stream for Monday via Royal Blue Mersey

539566904.0.jpg

Spain vs Italy first, then England vs Iceland

The most interesting thing in the world football took place in New Jersey last night as Lionel Messi choked in a penalty shootout, allowing Chile to repeat as Copa America champs. It is the third straight summer in which Argentina has made the final of a major tournament only to be knocked off at the end. Following the loss, Messi called it quits for Argentina. Who knows if the “retirement” will last, but it happened.

As for the competition at hand, here is where Euro 2016 stands as the teams head into the final day of the Round of 16:

On the Everton front, Romelu Lukaku played 75 minutes for the Belgians yesterday as they crushed Hungary 4-0. The striker didn’t score any goals but looks to remain as the squad’s first choice up top.

Seamus Coleman, James McCarthy and Aiden McGeady are all headed home after a tough 2-1 lost to hosts France yesterday. The Irish led 1-0 for more than half the game before Antoine Griezmann scored a brace in rapid succession to advance Les Bleus.

Today, two more Evertonians MAY get on the field, but probably not. John Stones and Ross Barkley are the only two non-goalkeepers on England’s team to not get on the field at any point thus far in the tournament. So, odds are they won’t start and it would seem highly unlikely that they appear off the bench. Ah well, here’s to hoping we get a few camera shots of them warming up at various points!

To the football…

Everton involved in chase to sign Axel Witsel via Royal Blue Mersey

543168468.0.jpg

Face competition from Chelsea for the midfielder

According to reports Everton are involved alongside Chelsea and other Premier League teams to sign Belgium international Axel Witsel from Zenit St Petersburg in the Russian Premier Liga. The player is currently involved with Belgium in the Euro 2016 competition and has attracted several teams for his strong central midfield play.

Witsel plays a central midfield role, but is known to slot as an attacking midfielder as well as a defensive midfielder. Everton will be looking to shore up the midfield position behind Ross Barkley with Leon Osman and Steven Pienaar departing and Gareth Barry getting another season older. Darron Gibson and James McCarthy also provide additional depth at the position.

He is 27 years old and his value is estimated at about £27 million currently, but as with many players his value will likely be inflated with a solid Euro 2016 tournament. This adds to the list of potential midfielders nearing the age of 30 linked with Everton this off season. It’s curious if this is the direction that Ronald Koeman and Farhad Moshiri are intending to go or just where the tabloids are finding the easiest links to make with our new money.

Blues should be glad Hodgson ignored Barkley & Stones via Royal Blue Mersey

539422348.0.jpg

Commentary on the failings of the Three Lions

England exited the Euro 2016 tournament at the first knockout round stage last night. While that in itself is not the most necessarily dishonorable, it is the manner of their departure that has made the nation the laughing stock of the footballing world.

A 2-1 loss to minnows Iceland despite leading just three minutes into the game is the kind of story that goes down in sporting folklore, with the Three Lions set to be the butt of many jokes for years to come. Not since the 1-0 loss to the USA in the 1950 World Cup has England so spectacularly crashed and burned.

Roy Hodgson’s hasty exit stage left seemed pre-rehearsed and convenient. There are plenty of fingers to be pointed and questions to be asked of his management, and the man not accountable any more. His questionable squad selection, obstinate tactical decisions and overall defensive demeanor all culminated in making a mockery of the Premier League, where all 23 players in his squad ply their trade, and a League that tries to sell itself as the best in the world.

From an Everton perspective, four players have been involved in the national setup leading up to this season. Leighton Baines had an underwhelming 2015-16 season, blighted by injury and loss of form led to his being dropped from the England setup, and understandably so. Club captain Phil Jagielka not being selected to the team made much less sense. Despite the Blues’ abysmal defensive record during the last two seasons, Jags for the most part kept his reputation intact, trying to stem a tidal wave on his own like an English Moses.

Hodgson’s persistence with Chris Smalling and Gary Cahill smacked of the stubbornness that has characterized his tenure, despite the utter inability of either to play a pass longer than ten feet ahead of them. Quite how the English management watched Leonardo Bonucci play without spontaneously bursting into flames we will never know. If only England had someone like that they could turn to.

But, soft! What light through yonder window breaks? John Stones, you don’t say! The youngster has made striding forward with composure and distributing the ball efficiently his calling card, and would have been the perfect choice to link the defence and a midfield that had no identity of its own.

Which is where the fourth Blue would have made a difference. Ross Barkley and Stones were the only two outfield players in the Three Lions squad to not get a single minute of play in the competition.

The fanciful fantasy of Hodgson using Wayne Rooney as a deep-lying playmaker aside, the squad badly needed a player that would run at the defence, creating gaps that would allow players to run into. Instead we were treated to scenes of Roberto Martinez-esque football where the ball got pingponged around the middle of the park until out of sheer boredom someone finally lunked it forward for someone else to chase. Might as well as gone Route A and hoofed it forward from the backline, bypassing a mostly ineffective midfield.

There is no doubting that there are plenty of talented English players. But it’s been decades since the sum of the parts have been greater than a whole for England. The key missing element has been a lack of teamwork, or a manager that could coax the best out of the players selected to wear the national team’s colours.

One of Hodgson’s favourite excuses has been that as a national team coach he doesn’t have enough time to train with this players. Then you watch managers like Antonio Conte mercilessly drill his severely limited squad to perform intricate actions repeatedly until they make the right turns in their sleep, and you realize that Hodgson’s biggest weakness has been his lack of spine to hold his prima donnas accountable.

We should all be grateful that none of the Everton players in the England setup will be daubed with the shameful paintbrush that Hodgson wielded so clumsily at the Euro 2016.

Scouting rumored transfer targets: Mata, Aboubakar, Sneijder via Royal Blue Mersey

528881404.0.jpg

Delving deeper into the transfer market rumors

With a new manager and new investment, it's no surprise that there have already been plenty of Everton-related transfer rumors flying around the internet this month. While more often than not these rumors turn out to be nothing, it's still interesting and potentially worthwhile to consider how rumored targets might fit in and what they could contribute if signed. For the first of what could be a summer-long series, we'll take a look at Manchester United attacker Juan Mata, FC Porto striker Vincent Aboubakar, and Galatasaray midfielder Wesley Sneijder.

Juan Mata

Despite being Chelsea's player of the year in 2012-13, José Mourinho did not take a liking to the Spanish midfielder and eventually sold him to Manchester United in January of 2014 for £37,000,000. With Mourinho now the manager of United, it is unclear if they will be able to work together and according to SkyBet, Everton are currently favorites to sign him.

Mata has been an elite playmaker for some time now and his name will undoubtedly cause a stir for that reason. However, his offensive production has for the most part been dropping steadily since that wonderful 2012/13 campaign:

160621%20Mata.png
Data from whoscored.com

Last season his numbers were quite similar to those of Ross Barkley but with fewer shots, though one needs to keep in mind that he was playing in a very restrictive system under Louis van Gaal. Mata has never been known for his defensive work, though his interception/tackle numbers are still respectable for his position and are also comparable to Barkley.

The Spaniard remains a top talent and his inclusion would certainly improve Everton’s midfield. Another plus is his versatility, as he could play centrally, on the left, or on the right depending on the situation. However, his market value is a very steep £34,000,000 according to Transfermarkt.com, and he is 28 years old.

If his production is similar to that of Barkley but with an extra 6 years of age, one wonders if the price is worth it. This is no slight on Mata himself—he is still an excellent talent and a likable person—but generally speaking, spending that amount of money on a player the wrong side of the aging curve is a poor idea, especially when there are other options, some of which internal.

Vincent Aboubakar

Aboubakar’s name has cropped up recently as a potential replacement for Romelu Lukaku, whose future is very much still up in the air. He is a 24-year-old striker for FC Porto and the Cameroon national team.

On the plus side, Aboubakar has been scoring fairly consistently for the last three seasons (I threw in some other names for context; keep in mind that it’s more difficult to score in the Premier League than it is in the Primeira Liga or in Ligue 1):

Screen%20Shot%202016-06-23%20at%204.09.55%20PM.png

NPG = non-penalty goals

On the minus side, his creation and defensive numbers don’t measure up quite as well. But he is definitely physically powerful and has both Champions League and international experience.

In 2014, Ted Knutson called him “pretty average outside of of the scoring,” and for the most part I think that’s still true. You might say, “hey, he’s a striker, it’s his job to score,” and you wouldn’t be wrong, but when scouting forwards in their mid-20s from lesser leagues I think you generally want to see more than just goals. Top forwards in the Premier League are asked to quite a bit of non-scoring work, and you want to know before splashing the cash that a transfer target has a reasonable chance of adapting. With Aboubakar I’m not sure.

Wesley Sneijder

The Dutch attacking midfielder is the latest high profile player to be linked to the Blues, with some reports suggesting that Everton have already agreed to trigger his release clause.

Sneijder comes with two fairly immediate red flags: his age (32), and his current league of play (Turkey). The age is probably the bigger concern—despite the relative weakness of the Turkish League, Sneijder does have plenty of Serie A, Champions League, and International football under his belt.

At their peaks, Mata and Sneijder both put in seasons of 3.0+ KP/90 and 0.6+ SC/90 ( where SC = scoring contribution = non-penalty goals + assists). Those are really good numbers for attacking midfielders (3-4+ KP is Özil/Eriksen/Silva range), but the worry from an Everton perspective is that neither player has been quite that good within the last two seasons. Sneijder’s last season at Galatasary was close but the overall trend is downwards.

Speaking of Mata, a quick side by side of him and Sneijder is interesting. Let’s throw in Barkley again as well as he is currently Everton’s best attacking midfielder:

Screen%20Shot%202016-06-23%20at%204.10.28%20PM.png
Data from whoscored.com

While Sneijder and Mata have produced very similar assists and goal numbers, two stylistic differences stick out: (1) Sneijder loves to shoot, Mata not so much, and (2) Sneijder tends to play many more through balls. (1) generally reflects poorly on the Dutchman (given the same goal output) and (2) generally reflects well but the utility and interpretation of both have a lot to do with the style of play in which each player has been employed, as well as the style of play Everton will look to deploy under Koeman. Sneijder’s numbers reflect a more open and direct style of play (see also his lower pass%), whereas Mata’s reflect a slower possesion-based style, though without watching too much Galatasaray over the last few seasons it’s really hard to say too much more in that regard. In any case, it’s worth considering when imagining either in the Everton XI.

On a side note, check out Barkley’s dribbling numbers—as the game film bears out as well, he is a much more mobile attacker than either of the above. Of course this comes with its downsides: more dispossessions and a greater chance of being caught out of shape.

As always, so much of this hinges on Sneijder’s transfer fee and wages. At £5,800,000, Everton have seemed to have nailed the former (his Transfermarkt.com value is £10,300,000), but the latter remains a concern. It seems likely that Sneijder would command heavy wages. Everton can probably handle them with their new budget but my main concern would be (1) the effect of an unequal wage structure in the dressing room and (2) the fact that Sneijder has failed to play 75%+ of league minutes during any of the last 6 seasons.

I’ve always liked Sneijder, but this is one where expectations need to be managed. If he does sign, he will not play every game, and he probably won’t do a lot of running or defensive work. That being said, if the money is right, he remains a classy playmaker who can unlock a defense with a key pass here and there.

Everton and Palace in duel over French international goalie via Royal Blue Mersey

134944352.0.jpg

Marseille player out of contract currently

Everton have offered Steve Mandanda a three-year contract in the battle to get the goalkeeper’s signature. The player’s contract at Olympique Marseille expired at the end of the 2015-16 season and he has indicated that he would like to move abroad next.

A long-time backup to Hugo Lloris in the France setup, Mandanda is currently involved in the Euro 2016 championship where the home side is heavily favored to win. He started 36 games for Marseille in a disappointing season for the former French giants, finishing in 13th place. The Kinshasa-born goalie has made over 400 appearances for Marseille since signing from Le Havre in 2007, with 22 senior international caps since 2008.

At 31-years-old, Mandanda is not considered to be a long-term solution as Everton look to replace Tim Howard who was at the club for ten years, but more of a stop-gap solution. Known for his shot-stopping and reflexes, he is expected to challenge current starter Joel Robles for the first team position. The Blues had been mentioned as a possible destination for the player during the January transfer window as well.

Fellow Premier League team Crystal Palace have also been involved in negotiations for the player, and were rumored to be close to signing the goalkeeper. Chelsea have also been linked to Mandanda as a backup for their starter Thibaut Courtois, but it is expected that the OM goalie is going to choose a club that he can start at. The Stamford Bridge side have a vacancy for their backup as Asmir Begovic is out of contract this summer too, and has also been linked with the Goodison Park job.

Everton fans relieved, former United winger heading to La Liga via Royal Blue Mersey

130746653.0.jpg

Not quite the marquee signing we’re waiting to see

Turkish club Fenerbahce have confirmed that they will be selling Nani to Valencia in Spain. The former Manchester United player had been linked with Everton after decent performances during the ongoing Euro 2016 tournament where Portugal play Poland in the quarterfinals tomorrow. Valencia have not confirmed the deal as yet, but will pay €8.5million to bring Nani to the Mestalla.

Inter Milan and Liverpool were two other clubs linked to the winger along with the Blues and the La Liga club. The 29-year-old featured in a total of 47 games this season in Turkey, scoring 12 goals and 13 assists in all competitions.

The winger picture remains unclear at Everton beyond Kevin Mirallas, Aaron Lennon and Gerard Deulofeu. Aiden McGeady is still an Everton player after spending the second half of last season at Sheffield Wednesday where he was eventually dropped from the side after a string of poor performances.

New manager Ronald Koeman is yet to make a senior team signing since his appointment at Finch Farm, and fans are waiting with bated breath to see what his first move will be.

Euro 2016 quarterfinals: Poland vs Portugal start time, TV schedule and live stream for Thursday via Royal Blue Mersey

542141056.0.jpg

Lewandowski or Ronaldo; who will prevail?

Only eight teams remain at the 2016 Euros. Today, two of the teams whose big stars have seen their struggles throughout this tournament, face-off for the first spot in the semi-finals.

Poland’s main man, Robert Lewandowski, has appeared in all of the team’s games, but is yet to come up on the scoresheet. If they could get him going, the deep Polish squad may be too much for Portugal to handle.

It will be Cristiano Ronaldo who has the last say there, however. The superstar does have two goals and two assists to his name so far in Euro 2016, and was instrumental to the goal that put Portugal past Croatia in the Round of 16. But he has seemed like a one-man show this tourney; without him at his best they may struggle to break down the Polish backline.

Goalie will be Koeman’s first signing for Everton via Royal Blue Mersey

503340236.0.jpg

Another goalie will be signed as well

Reliable sources in the media reported late on Thursday that Ronald Koeman was ready to make his first signing for Everton. Goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg will be signed from Fulham, with the manager looking to add another goalie to beef up the ranks at Goodison Park.

Fulham goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg signs for Everton. Ronald Koeman will sign another keeper as well.

— paul joyce (@pjoyceexpress) June 30, 2016

The Dutch keeper is a product of the famed Ajax Amsterdam youth system, and went on to play there for nine seasons before moving on to AS Roma, Fulham, AS Monaco and Southampton. The goalie also has 54 international caps for the Netherlands between 2004-2012, with the highlight of his career being a World Cup silver medal in 2010.

Koeman’s familiarity with Stekelenburg goes back fifteen years to 2002 when he signed the young goalie in just his second season as manager at Ajax. He then took the player on loan last season from Fulham, with Stekelenburg starting 25 games in all competitions while first choice Fraser Forster recovered from injury.

Stekelenburg is currently 33 and is expected to fill the backup role at Everton after the departure of Tim Howard.
