Shop Around via Everton Arent We

Witsel.jpg

Alright, I’m back from a self-imposed sabbatical, if having continuous holidays is good enough for Koeman then it’s good enough for me. Well I’m back now, here again to write some words about Everton that hopefully won’t bore your kecks off.

Lucky, lucky you.

So what’s new then? We’ve got a manager, which was a good start. Koeman was definitely a preferred candidate, so kudos to all involved with that decision. But we don’t need to go into that, there have been enough articles about it already. If I read another recycled, half arsed rallying cry about a “new Everton” I may just stop interneting all together.

What else? Darren Gibson got a new deal, bit of a weird one, that. Tim Howard has gone, which makes me happy. Leon Osman and Tony Hibbert have gone, which also makes me happy. Yes they left without fanfare, but do remember that both had testimonials. What other fanfare was there to make? Have a parade and bring out all the trophies they won with us – oh wait… Everton have lacked somewhat of a ruthless streak recently, if the ambitions are as lofty as alleged, then such a streak will be a necessity.

Outside of Everton, heads seem to be rolling and it’s absolutely fantastic. Anyone read that “Why Premier League Sides Shouldn’t Let Everton Have Axel Witsel”? Contender for catchiest article title, right there. If it’s this bad now, imagine what it’ll be like when we actually start signing players?

Well now that’s us all up to speed, let’s talk about money. This is only a short one, my pre-season if you will? Standards are changing within the Everton fanbase and rightly so, but the rise needs to be kept in check. While using my new Everton Aren’t We App, available now on all good smartphones, I noticed some comments from blues regarding a potential move for Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda. While the move never materialised, a fantastic signing for Palace by the way, it still offers some food for thought. Some were suggesting he wasn’t a good enough signing purely because he was available on a free transfer, yes this is the four time Ligue 1 Goalkeeper of the Year we are talking about.

Stekelenberg.jpg

The idea that every signing this summer needs to be bordering on a record fee is just not feasible. Just because Everton have gained a much-needed cash injection, it does not mean that the notion of ‘value for money’ has now gone out the window. We’ve already seen one clever buy in Maarten Stekelenberg, who provides decent competition for the No1 jersey, bags of experience and a player that Ronald Koeman has an excellent relationship with. While it may seem underwhelming for many Everton fans, should the club really be going out and spending £15 million on a player who will rarely see first team action? On top of that, another more expensive option may not bring as many positive qualities as Stekelenberg, player recruitment goes much further than the transfer fee.

The same can be said of another keeper that we’ve been linked with, Kasper Schmeichel is apparently available for £17 million. While this may seem like a sensible fee, it must be remembered that Everton need a major squad overhaul and the budget is not bottomless. Surely better value can be found in the shape of Asmir Begovic? The Bosnian is a year younger, consistently proven in the Premier League and allegedly costing around £9 million less. Rather than be swept up by flavours of the month and endless big names, club and fans alike need to be much more cunning this summer. As a club we have excelled at unearthing bargains for years, it is not something we should look to disregard so quickly.

Right, now that’s your expectations tapered, let’s send them into overdrive once again. Juan Mata has been linked with a move to Goodison in recent days, and although there have been no substantial and concrete reports, nobody is ruling anything out. Personally I think he would be the perfect marquee signing for the club, he is a player in his prime who is capable of playing at the highest level. Mata would provide some much needed creativity, which Everton have lacked since Steven Pienaar jibbed off his dreads. That sort of quality is difficult to find in the modern game, it’s also expensive. If Juan Mata could be one of the first names through the door this summer, which I stress is a considerably big if, it could make the subsequent recruitment of players a hell of a lot easier. For me, it’s a no brainer.

Dreaming is nice, but a healthy dash of realism will hold us in good stead for the coming window. Or Moshiri could think sod it and pay Lionel Messi in private islands. Who knows ay?

Whatever happens, it has to be better than Graeme Jones directing a corner that hasn’t been practiced.

Up The Toffees.

Where Are Everton’s Defensive Reinforcements? via Royal Blue Mersey

Transfer rumors are flying around Everton Football Club, but there is a conspicuous absence of players of a certain type.

This is an exciting summer to be a supporter of Everton Football Club.

The club has a new manager in Ronald Koeman, who has significant success in the Premier League and the near-unanimous backing of Everton supporters. Even more encouragingly, the club has a new owner in Farhad Moshiri who is clearly ready and willing to spend money to improve the level of talent in the side.

Most recently, midfielders Axel Witsel and Juan Mata have been rumored to be moving to Merseyside before the season starts. Each of these players could fill an important need for the Toffees.

Witsel is the sort of box-to-box midfielder that Everton missed for much of last season. As James McCarthy struggled and Gareth Barry aged, the Toffees completely lacked a physical force in the center of midfield that could contribute in both attack and defense. Witsel, despite Belgium's struggles at Euro 2016, can bring both the edge and skill the team frequently lacked this season.

Everton's struggles in wide areas this season were well documented, and Mata could certainly help to sort out that problem. The Spaniard also has the ability to play as a No. 10 and put a little added pressure on Ross Barkley.

The Toffees have also already added Maarten Stekelenburg to fill in the obvious gap left in goal by the departure of Tim Howard and continued average-at-best play of Joel Robles.

Each of these players would/will fill an obvious need, but it seems pretty clear that Everton's greatest need for most of last season was in the defense corps, not in front of or behind it.

Skipper Phil Jagielka deserves to keep his place in the lineup, as the team gave up half a goal less per game with him in the lineup. Past him though, it would be easy to argue for the removal of any other regular on the back line from last season.

John Stones may be on his way out the door. Seamus Coleman was oft-injured and contributed very little to the team's attack. Leighton Baines found his form to an extent near the end of the season, but also found himself on the bench when healthy at times. Ramiro Funes Mori has shown poor judgment and decision-making on a regular basis.

Of course, I'm not arguing that all of these players should be benched at the start of the season — but the fact that a reasonable argument could be made for just about all of them is a clear indication that the team needs to invest some of its new-found money in one or two new defenders.

As of right now, no serious rumors have surfaced connecting the Toffees and a defender, with the lone notable exception being Bruno Martins Indi, who Everton has bid 10 million euros on, according to a single Portuguese newspaper. Given the single source reporting the inquiry and the unreliable nature of summer football reporting, such a move is certainly far from a sure thing.

Any new player wouldn't have to be of an elite caliber, particularly at full-back where Baines and Coleman probably deserve another chance to prove their worth this season, but a proven record of success in a major league is a must.

Ideally, the Toffees should add a center-back who can play alongside Jagielka, compete with Funes Mori, and fill in for the club captain on occasion, who will be 34 by the time the season starts. Another full-back, particularly one who can play on the right, is equally important given the departure of Tony Hibbert.

In January 2016, Roberto Martinez ignored his team's obvious defensive struggles, refused to bring in another defender, and instead wasted the team's cash on a forward he barely used. Koeman's potential additions obviously seem to be a significant improvement over what Martinez did in January, but if he doesn't prioritize his defense, he may face the same failures as his Spanish predecessor.

Romelu Lukaku set for Everton stay after transfer turnaround via Royal Blue Mersey

Belgian striker could stay after all

According to the Mirror, Romelu Lukaku is set to sign a new contract with Everton this summer.

The striker has been heavily linked with a move away from Goodison Park after hitting 25 goals in all competitions last season.

Indeed, he and his father have been vocal about a move to a Champions League club while his agent has also been touting him around Europe.

However, it now appears that he has had a change of heart and the Mirror are reporting that he is ready to stay at Everton and commit his future to the club.

According to the newspaper, he is prepared to drop his demands as he has been convinced that the arrival of majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri can take them into the Champions League.

As a reward for his turnaround, the club are likely to offer him improved terms that will include a hefty pay rise for the striker.

The latest development will come as good news to Everton, who it appears are no longer a club that must rely on selling their star men as they did in the past.

Everton willing to smash wage structure with £120,000-per-week Witsel offer via Royal Blue Mersey

The Belgian midfielder would become Everton's highest earner.

According to the Mirror, Everton will smash their wage structure to secure Axel Witsel’s move to Goodison Park.

The Blues are keen on the Belgian midfielder, who wants to leave Zenit St Petersburg this summer.

They have made a £28.5 million offer to the Russian giants for their star man, and are willing to offer him big wages to ensure he makes the move to Merseyside.

According to the Mirror, they will offer him a rise on his current £100,000-per-week wages and have offered him £120,00-per-week.

That would see him surpass the current highest earner at the club and see him take home around £6.24 million a year.

Their offer has blown rivals Napoli out of the race for his signature, although Roma remain keen on a deal.

However, the 27-year-old is happy to join Everton and has been impressed by the ambition shown by both Ronald Koeman and majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri.

The news certainly fits with previous reports from the club, which had suggested that Moshiri was determined to offer stars big wages this summer in what is looking like the dawn of a new era at Goodison Park.

Everton reported to have held preliminary talks over Graziano Pelle via Royal Blue Mersey

468587866.0.jpg

Koeman wants his striker

Reports say that Ronald Koeman wants Graziano Pelle. How far he will go to get his man is something we are about to find out in the coming days.

Local paper the Liverpool Echo reported late yesterday that Everton have opened preliminary discussions with a view to signing the Italian forward. He has one more year on his contract with Southampton, but unconfirmed reports say that £16m is the magic number required to snatch the player away.

The striker, who turns 30 in just over a week, has previously played for Koeman at Feyenoord in the Eredivisie, and last season with the Saints in the Premier League. Pelle also has 17 senior caps with the Italian side, scoring seven goals in the process.

With reports yesterday saying that Romelu Lukaku is set to stay, it’ll be interesting to see how Koeman plans to utilize the two strikers, who both play a strong, physical game.

Also to be seen is how that plays out with squad players Arouna Kone and Oumar Niasse, neither of whom have impressed in spot duty.

There is additional interest in Pelle after an excellent Euro 2016 campaign in which an under-strength Italy side over-achieved in a remarkable manner, in no shortage due to the strong shifts put in by Pelle and his compatriots. As an advanced forward charged with putting pressure on the opponents trying to play out of defence, Pelle’s workrate was on display in the 2-0 win against Spain as he time and again closed down Sergio Busquets and choked off any moves from the back.

The player is currently on holiday after the Italians’ exit from the tournament, and he will make his choice of the European and Chinese clubs chasing him when he returns next week.
