Pelle set for lucrative move to China

Everton could be set to miss out on Graziano Pelle with the striker reportedly close to a move to China.

Ronald Koeman was believed to be keen on re-signing Pelle, who he worked with both at Southampton and Feyenoord.

Reports earlier this week claimed the Toffees had opened preliminary talks with Southampton over a deal to sign the Italian international, with a fee in the region of £16m mooted.

However, Press Association journalist Simon Peach claims Pelle is set to become the latest big money import in China.

Shandong Luneng Taishan are reportedly ready to offer £13million for the 30-year-old and offer the striker significant wages.

Chinese Super League sides have an almost unlimited budget as the government seek to grow the country into a footballing force.

Even with Farhad Moshiri’s riches behind them Everton would be reluctant to enter a bidding war for a player of Pelle’s age who will have minimal sell-on value.

It looks like Pelle is a name to scratch off Everton’s summer wanted list.

Everton receive boost in Juan Mata chase via Royal Blue Mersey

Toffees’ transfer rivals pull out of race for midfielder

Everton look to be in pole position to sign Juan Mata with reports in Spain suggesting La Liga sides have pulled out of the race to sign the midfielder.

Spanish website Sport.es reports new Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, who sold Mata when he was Chelsea boss, is keen to offload the midfielder again as quickly as possible and is prepared to offer a cut price deal.

However, even with a reduced transfer fee it is claimed Mata would still be too expensive for Spanish clubs.

Valencia are keen to re-sign the 28-year-old, who spent four years at the Mestalla between 2007 and 2011, but their much publicised financial problems mean any deal is out of the question.

Sport.es say that only Spain’s big three – Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid – could afford to sign the midfielder, but none of them are interested.

Barcelona were reportedly offered the chance to sign earlier in the summer but turned it down.

That leaves Mata’s options severely limited and with Man Utd reportedly keen to sell quickly, Everton are suddenly in the driving seat.

Mata is believed to be valued at £21million, a fee Everton would have no problem in paying.

The Toffees are also in a position to offer substantial wages thanks to the backing of new owner Farhad Moshiri.

Mata reported back for pre-season training with Man United this week and has not spoken openly about his future.

But if this latest report is to be believed his future at Old Trafford looks uncertain and a move to Goodison Park now looks increasingly likely.

Witsel set to snub Everton and join Napoli via Royal Blue Mersey

Blow as Serie A side come in with new offer

Everton could be set to miss out on Axel Witsel with Italian media reporting Napoli have agreed terms with the Zenit St Petersburg midfielder.

The Toffees thought they were in pole position to sign the Belgium international given they were able to offer substantially higher wages than the Serie A club .

However, Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio claims that negotiations have hit a snag, allowing Napoli to come back in with an improved offer.

Website Football Italia now report that Napoli have agreed terms with Witsel’s representatives.

They cite Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli – a radio station affiliated with the club – as it’s source.

Though the offer is unlikely to match Everton’s Napoli can offer Champions League football, something that may turn Witsel’s head.

The news would, of course, be a blow to Ronald Koeman as he looks to re-shape his midfield for the coming season.

It does though highlight the reality that, despite Farhad Moshiri’s considerable backing, some big-name players will be reluctant to move to Goodison Park until they are competing in the Champions League.

It means we may have to be patient in the transfer market and accept some targets remain out of our reach – for now.

City Council to spend £4m on Finch Farm improvements via Royal Blue Mersey

Plans not without some opposition though

The Liverpool City Council will invest £4m on upgrading Everton’s training facility at Finch Farm. The complex is owned by the Council and rented to the Toffees.

Among the planned improvements at the Halewood site are a recuperation suite for players recovering from injuries, a new block for groundsmen and a mini-stadium as well.

Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson and the council's cabinet have agreed that it is a good investment, but have come under some criticism from the Liberal Democrat opposition, who are questioning the use of taxpayers' money.

Opposition leader Richard Kemp would like to see Everton pay for the refurbishment, saying –

"EFC now have a backer and more money – why cannot they finance it themselves?"

He also raised some questions regarding the terms and conditions which were not included in the investment report.

However, the mayor has said that the rent will increase by more than 3% to help cover the cost of the planned improvements.

"It's a fantastic deal for us and the city of Liverpool.

"It is like when you buy a house and you rent it out. If you want to put an extra room on it, you'll make sure it brings you extra revenue."

Everton appoint EITC head to new-look Board via Royal Blue Mersey

Dedicated custodian of the club joins board

Everton recently announced the appointment of Dr. Denise Barrett-Baxendale, MBE to the club’s Board of Directors. She joined the Toffees in 2010 as the Chief Executive of Everton in the Community, which is Everton’s award-winning community outreach venture.

Since Farhad Moshiri’s takeover as majority stake holder in the club, the Board of Directors has been retooled to now comprise: chairman Bill Kenwright, deputy chairman Jon Woods, chief executive Robert Elstone, director Alexander Ryazantsev and the new fifth member, Dr. Barrett-Baxendale.

Barrett-Baxendale was also club's chief operating officer since 2011, and responsible for the HR, ICT, stadium operations, and stadium safety and security teams. She will continue in her role as deputy chief executive officer of the club and will take up the new position of executive chair at Everton in the Community.

This is what she had to say after her appointment –

"I am so proud to have been invited to join the club's board and I am very grateful to Mr Kenwright and Mr Moshiri for giving me the opportunity to help achieve the owners' and directors' ambition for Everton.

"This is something I am really excited by and a responsibility I take very seriously. There is so much we want to do to take this great club forward and I am confident that through the board's ambition and the talent within our senior executive team we can make positive progress very quickly."

Chairman Bill Kenwright added –

"On behalf of all the directors and Farhad, I am pleased to welcome Denise to the board. I'm pleased for her, of course, but also pleased for every Evertonian as I know Denise will be such a dedicated custodian of our club."

The Liverpool Echo speaks in glowing terms about her abilities, saying that while her business credentials are well-proven, it's her people skills that will change the perception of the Everton board. For the fans, the Board has long been an impenetrable and unapproachable part of the club that has never deemed it necessary to make public the inner workings of Everton.

The newspaper goes on to say that the club has desperately needed ‘a visible, approachable and available figurehead’, and in Denise Barrett-Baxendale (a lifelong fan of Everton who grew up with a poster of club legend Bob Latchford on her wall), they finally have one ‘who is vibrant, charming, enthusiastic and approachable’.
