Blues chasing youth international star

Everton are said to be in talks with Sebastien Haller, who has had a sparkling season with Utrecht in the Eredivisie, being named the club’s Player of the Year. He ended up with 19 goals in 35 league games in the just concluded 2015-16 season, with 11 goals in 17 games while on loan the previous season from Auxerre, his first professional club. The 22-year-old striker has played over 45 games for Frannce’s youth international teams, scoring 21 goals in the process.

Over the last twelve months, he has turned down Norwich City and Swansea City, while the Daily Star claims that Tottenham, Sunderland, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa are all interested in the player as well.

Another British daily, The Mail, reported that Haller is looking for a move to the Toffees after rejecting a big-money switch to Beijing Guoan in the Chinese Super League, where another Everton target Graziano Pelle is rumoured to be headed.

Haller is a 6’2” striker who is reputed to be strong in the air and WhoScored have him listed as not having any significant weaknesses.

Veteran could still play a big part

Everton manager Ronald Koeman has spoken about his first signing since his appointment at the Toffees. Veteran Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg was signed by the club on a three-year contract earlier this month.

In an interview with the Liverpool Echo, this is what Koeman had to say –

"I'm very pleased, you know we had Joel (Robles) as the goalkeeper and we need competition in that position. I know Maarten very well.

"I took him to Southampton and he did a good job. He was second choice under Fraser Forster but a really good professional and I'm very happy he's one of our first signings.

"First of all he brings quality which is very important and then he's a goalkeeper with experience.

"Six summers ago he played in the final of the World Cup in South African in 2010. Goalkeepers have their best seasons from the age of 30. He's 33 and still has a good future as a goalkeeper ahead of him and that's very important."

Everton are said to be still in the market for another goalkeeper, with Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel linked to the club recently.
