Here’s what the new hire had to say –

“I’m proud and privileged to become Director of Football at such a fantastic and historic club. With a new manager and a new major shareholder, it feels very much like a new era here at Everton and that potential is what is most exciting. I know the Club well, my roots are in the north west and my brother, Mickey, was an Everton player in the Bob Latchford era and always proud of that fact. I also did my initial teacher training at Liverpool Hope University many years ago. I’m genuinely excited to be here at the Club and very much looking forward to getting down to work.”

Manager Ronald Koeman’s comments on the new Director of Football –

“It’s really good for the Club to have someone in Steve who has shown his quality in his job at a number of clubs over many years. That’s the experience and quality he will bring to us at a good time in the season. He has a great deal of knowledge about building for the long-term and the magnificent work he did at Leicester on top of the job he did at Chelsea makes us excited to have him here at Everton.”

Club Chairman Bill Kenwright said –

“It’s great news to welcome Steve to our new era at Everton Football Club. His track record, particularly at Leicester City, is already the stuff of football folklore, and both myself and Farhad, having spent time with Steve, are convinced he is exactly the right fit for our Club and our new manager, Ronald Koeman.”

Everton have completed a deal with Leicester City for scout Steve Walsh, according to the Daily Mail.

The Blues had targeted the Foxes man earlier last week and saw their initial approach for his services rejected by the Premier League champions.

However, Walsh was keen on the move and personally asked Leicester City owners the Srivaddhanaparabha family to sanction the switch.

They eventually let him talk to the Toffees and the Daily Mail report he has made the move, with the Foxes expected to demand compensation for their man.

He will take up the newly created Director of Football role at Goodison Park, with the hope being he will be the link between the board and manager Ronald Koeman.

The Dutchman has worked with a Director of Football throughout his managerial career and was keen to get a similar set up created on Merseyside.

With Walsh now appointed, he will be hoping that they can step up their pursuit of players this summer.

So far Maarten Stekelenburg is the only new face to arrive but Koeman is eager to get several new signings secured.

Everton make move to sign Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson via Royal Blue Mersey

Toffees ready to make £25m bid for Iceland midfielder

Everton are ready to make a £25m bid for Swansea and Iceland midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the Toffees are on the brink of testing Swansea’s resolve with a big money bid following Steve Walsh’s arrival as director of football.

Sigurdsson was reportedly a target of Walsh when he was at Leicester while new Everton manager Ronald Koeman was also keen on the former Tottenham man when the Dutchman was in charge of Southampton.

The 26-year-old enjoyed a successful season at Swansea, scoring 11 goals, before playing a key role in Iceland’s remarkable run to the Euro 2016 quarter-finals.

Everton have been quiet in the transfer window so far but the arrival of Walsh to complete the club’s new look management team should see things accelerate.

Swansea will be reluctant to sell Sigurdsson having already lost the midfielder to Tottenham four years ago only to buy him back two seasons later.

However, the reported fee of £25m would be tough to turn down even in this hugely inflated transfer market.

The Telegraph journalist who broke the story is their Midlands reporter John Percy, who also broke the news of Walsh’s move to Everton.

Reading between the lines it seems Percy has links with Walsh, meaning this rumour may have some legs.

It has been a frustrating summer for the supporters so far when it comes to new signings, with Maarten Stekelenberg the only new face.

However, the appointment of first Koeman and now Walsh have put some vital building blocks in place.

Finally we may see some solid transfer activity splutter into life in the next few weeks.

Apparently Everton will make a substantial offer for the Iceland international who the report claims has been a target for both Koeman and new Director of Football Steve Walsh at their former clubs.
