Manchester City have changed their mind, they will meet Everton’s £50 million asking price for John Stones via Royal Blue Mersey

Shareholder Farhad Moshiri is proving to be a shrewd negotiator

Manchester City have changed their tune as it appears they are now willing to meet, and possibly exceed, Everton’s £50 million asking price for young defender John Stones, according to the Mirror.

This would be a cash only deal. Earlier in the week, there was talk of Pep Guardiola and company willing to pony up about £20 million and a player in order to lure Stones to Manchester. But it seems that the Toffees decision makers were unimpressed with the offer.

It had also previously been reported that City did not wish to go past the £40 million that Chelsea is rumored to have offered last summer, but there has been some sort of development within the last two days. The article says that Everton’s new shareholder Farhad Moshiri was steadfast in his determination to get what he perceives Stones to be worth and the Citizens have given in.

The most City has ever paid for a player was the £54.5 million they spent on Belgian midfielder Kevin De Bruyne when they bought him from Wolfsburg last year. If this story is to be believed, it seems quite possible that Stones will surpass that amount or at least come very close.

Everton are scheduled to play a friendly with Barnsley, Stones’ former club, on Saturday, but the centerback won’t take part. However, that is not because of an impending deal, but rather because Stones has some sort of minor injury that he is nursing.

As we mentioned a few days ago, Everton and new gaffer Ronald Koeman do not wish to draw out Stones’ transfer process. If the player wants to go and the team can get sufficient funds in return, then he will go. It appears that things are falling into place here and it’s likely that Stones is sold sometime in the next week. And with Everton now having the new Director of Football Steve Walsh appointed, one would hope the moves come thick and fast now for the boys in blue. We shall see.

Ross Barkley praised as Ronald Koeman era begins with a win via Royal Blue Mersey

New boss a happy man after pre-season victory

Everton manager Ronald Koeman declared himself satisfied after his new side eased to a 3-0 pre-season friendly win against Barnsley.

Goals from Kevin Mirallas, Gerard Deulofeu and Ross Barkley ensured Everton gave Koeman the perfect start in his first official friendly in charge.

The team was cheered on by 2,100 travelling Evertonians, desperate to catch a glimpse of the start of a new era.

The win capped a promising week for the Toffees, who also beat FK Jablonec 1-0 in a behind-closed-doors training game in Austria last Saturday.

Speaking after the match Koeman said:

"We created a lot of opportunities and we scored three goals and that's good. That's what you like to see.

"We can do some things better. We can communicate more than we did today but okay you have to understand it is only the third week of the pre-season and every game we need to improve individually and as a team.

"In the second half we controlled the game totally and that was good. I liked that.

"Defensively we had no problems in the second half.

"The clean sheet is not the most important thing but it gives confidence to everybody, especially defending set plays.

"We had some more tall people playing today, but maybe we were a bit lucky not to concede a goal at times but it was a good workout with some good football."

Koeman also singled out Barkley for praise after the England man powered home a spectacular third goal in the second half.

"It was a great goal and it's a great quality if you can shoot with your right and then shoot like that with your left, too.

"I remember him scoring a goal like that last season, I think it was in midweek in a home match. I remember it because Erwin was watching and he scored like this.

"He did well, but it's the first 45 minutes for him."

"What I want to see is that he moves in the midfield, takes good positions between the lines and of course, with his last pass, give good balls.

"He gave a good pass through for Gerard to score.

"And it was hard working from Lennon who won the ball and that is what you need, because the pace Gerard has up top makes it difficult for defenders."

Koeman was also pleased with how the players coped on a hot, humid day in south Yorkshire.

"It's always difficult to press and be mentally sharp in heat like this but we spoke about it.

"We want to press from the front and sometimes it is difficult for the strikers because they are not that type of players who like to press always, but they need to do it.

"It's good. it's training and we need that kind of exercise."

The Ronald Koeman era begins to take shape at Everton via Royal Blue Mersey

Barkley among scorers as Toffees win at Barnsley

Yes it is only a friendly. And yes, results don’t count for much in pre-season. But the excitement and anticipation among Everton supporters ahead of the new season was ratcheted up still further as the Ronald Koeman era began in earnest with a 3-0 victory against Barnsley at Oakwell.

If you count last week’s training game against FK Jablonec in Austria, Everton have picked up two wins from two so far in pre-season. Though more importantly it afforded the players vital game time to work on their fitness ahead of the new season.

It was also the first opportunity for the fans to see the team play under new manager Koeman, with 2,100 eager supporters making the trip to Yorkshire and giving the Dutchman a rapturous reception when he emerged from the tunnel before kick-off.

The highlight of a comfortable victory was a stunning goal from Ross Barkley, the midfielder rolling his defender before blasting a left-footed effort beyond Adam Davies and into the corner.

Barkley’s natural ability is not in question, but he still has the tendency to exasperate as much as excite. It will be fascinating to see how Koeman handles Barkley this season.

Another player who has often struggled to live up to his talent in Kevin Mirallas. His frosty relationship with Roberto Martinez undoubtedly played in part in his loss of form so he stands to benefit from Koeman’s arrival more than most.

The Belgian reminded us what he is capable of with a wonderful free-kick opener in the first half to set Everton on their way at Oakwell.

With Romelu Lukaku still on holiday and Oumar Niasee and Arouna Kone not in the squad, Gerard Deulofeu was pushed up front.

It wasn’t a total success, but it wasn’t a complete failure either and was certainly worth experimenting with.

The Spaniard latched onto a fine throughball from Barkley to score Everton’s second early in the second half.

Plenty of substitutions meant 20 players got a run out, including a first appearance for Shani Tarashaj.

The Swiss striker joined from Grasshoppers in January but stayed at his former club on loan before joining up with his new teammates this summer.

Seamus Coleman, Aiden McGeady, Bryan Oviedo and Ramiro Funes Mori also got a run out after they returned to training earlier this week following Euro 2016/Copa America.

It wasn’t all positive. Joel Robles looked uncertain at times in goal, prompting a shake of the head from his new manager on more than one occasion.

Everton have been linked with a number of goalkeepers this summer and it seems unlikely that Robles will be first choice when the transfer window closes at the end of next month.

All in all though it was a thoroughly satisfying afternoon, offering us a tantalising glimpse of what to expect from the team this season.

Next up for the Toffees is a first ever trip to stadium:mk to play MK Dons on Tuesday as preparations for the new campaign begin to gather pace.
