MK Dons 1-3 Everton – Deulofeu inspires Toffees to victory via Royal Blue Mersey

Everton continue fine pre-season form

Everton continued their winning start to pre-season with a 3-1 victory against League One side MK Dons.

Gerard Deulofeu and Ross Barkley – scorers at Barnsley on Saturday – put Everton ahead before Giorgio Rasulo pulled one back before half-time.

Substitute Muhamed Besic secured the victory with five minutes remaining when his deflected header looped beyond goalkeeper David Martin.

It was a second victory in the space of four days for the Toffees and more importantly allowed 21 players to get a run out as the squad build up their fitness for the new season.

Ronald Koeman made eight changes to the side that won at Oakwell on Saturday including first starts for Maarten Stekelenburg and Shani Tarashaj.

Everton went ahead after just two minutes at the Stadium:mk when Deulofeu raced onto a poor backpass, rounded goalkeeper Martin and scrambled home from close range.

Deulofeu then set up Everton’s second on 19 minutes when the Spaniard surged to the byline and crossed for Barkley to volley into the corner.

Stekelenburg had been largely untroubled up to that point but was picking the ball out of his net before half time when Rasulo powered the ball into the corner from the edge of the box.

MK Dons nearly equalised before the break but Stekelenburg and then Bryan Oviedo blocked the ball on the line.

Aiden McGeady came off the bench for his first action of pre-season and had a great chance to extend Everton’s lead early in the second half but fired timidly at the ‘keeper when well placed inside the area.

The raft of substitutions soon followed, predictably disrupting the flow of the game.

Koeman’s side confirmed the victory late on when McGeady crossed for the onrushing Besic, whose header deflected off George Williams and looped into the corner.

Everton’s pre-season continues in Germany with the Dresden Cup featuring games against Dynamo Dresden on Friday and Real Betis on Saturday.

Everton meet release clause for international midfielder via Royal Blue Mersey

Everton agree £7.2m fee with Aston Villa for Idrissa Gueye

Everton have met the £7.2m release clause in the contract of Aston Villa midfielder Idrissa Gueye, reports the Daily Mail and Sky Sports.

The Senegal international only joined Villa last summer for a fee in the region of £9m but the club’s relegation to the Championship activated a release clause in his contract.

That has allowed Everton to make a move, though the Mail claims that Villa are hopeful of receiving a higher bid with several other clubs still interested.

Gueye was reportedly a target of Leicester last season before the Foxes signed N’Golo Kante.

Leicester’s former head of recruitment, Steve Walsh, is now at Goodison Park of course, perhaps giving credence to these rumours.

Villa endured a miserable season last time out, finishing bottom of the Premier League with just 19 points.

Signing someone from such a poor side will hardly inspire much excitement among the supporters, especially compared some of the other names linked with the club this summer.

However, it pays to remember that the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy and Kante were hardly household names when they moved to Leicester – players all plucked from relative obscurity by Walsh.

Plus in the hugely inflated market we are seeing this summer £7.2m is a relative bargain.

Walsh was brought to the club because he has demonstrated a keen eye for a player. I guess we just have to put our faith in him to get it right.

Everton ‘advisor’ Sir Philip Green back in the spotlight over BHS report via Royal Blue Mersey

Parliamentary report critical of businessman who has had much to do with Everton

Sir Philip Green, who has been on the periphery of the Everton board for years, finds himself back in the spotlight again this week with the release of a damning report alleging “systematic plunder” of Green and his cronies over the years leading to the collapse of department store chain British Home Stores (BHS).

The chain closed its doors last month after they failed to find another buyer for it, but Green has been implicated in the report, which states that the “tragedy” at BHS was a result of the “unacceptable face of capitalism”. Questions have been raised about Green’s complex tax avoidance schemes which could change how private companies are governed and their pension funds regulated.

Green sold BHS for £1 in March 2015 to a consortium led by Dominic Chappell, a businessman who has declared bankruptcy three times. BHS then went into administration in April with a £571m pension deficit.

The MPs’ report tears Green’s business reputation to shreds, who went on to state that there is “little to support the reputation for retail business acumen for which he received his knighthood”, and the magnate finds himself in a situation where he will have to compensate the pension shortfall from his own coffers or find himself stripped of the knighthood.

The relationship Green has with Everton Football Club is even murkier than his decision to register his shell companies in offshore locations like the Jersey and British Virgin Islands for their “strong regulatory regimes.”

Green is an old friend and ‘advisor’ of club chairman Bill Kenwright, even though he is a Tottenham Hotspur supporter. He arranged for another business associate Robert Earl (who owns the Planet Hollywood chain) to purchase 24% stake in the club from former director Paul Gregg during a struggle for control of Everton in 2004. Gregg had reportedly stated that the payment for the shares had come from Green, not Earl.

Earl’s shares were held by a British Virgin Islands registered company (BCR Sports), the formation of which was based on the same complex financial structures that Green used to con the British Exchequer of hundreds of millions of pounds through shady tax avoidance schemes. That same 24% stake was part of the deal that brought new majority owner Farhad Moshiri to Everton, and he now controls 49.9% of the club.

In 2008, the Everton chief executive at the time Keith Wyness resigned, supposedly over the Kirkby Project affair and the huge influence that Sir Philip Green exerted over the club. The BBC reported

"Although Green, one of the richest men in the country, is not formally connected to Everton, he has been involved in much of the Toffees' recent activity."

"It is our understanding the manager David Moyes has had to go to Green on his plans to buy and sell players, and also finalise his contract."

In a telephone interview with the BBC, Green attempted to clarify his involvement –

"Everybody knows I'm a friend of Bill Kenwright, and I helped him get Everton.

"It is his club and his ball. He asked me for advice – If people ring me up and on a confidential basis ask me to help, what is wrong with that?”

With the latest troubles set to befall the Green empire, it will once again cast unfortunate light upon his involvement in Everton’s dealings over the years, especially with the “lines of credit” he has been known to offer the Toffees to secure signings and even proposed takeover attempts, as was the case by the Fortress Sports Fund (FSF), a Brunei based investment fund fronted by Christopher Samuelson, who was later involved in the demise of Reading Football Club.

Since Moshiri’s takeover of the club, there has been an attempt to clean out some of the skeletons in the Blues’ closet, with the Iranian billionaire appointing his ‘money guy’ Sasha Ryazantsev to the Board. As fans we can only hope that our dealings going forward will be above board (pun unintended) and not fraught with the sinister dealings the past two decades have seen.

Football transfer rumours: Blaise Matuidi to Manchester United and Jesé to Arsenal? via The Guardian

Today’s rumours are gathering pace

In this year of great uncertainty and unpredictability it is refreshing that we can still rely on one thing to remain the same: Arsenal players sustaining long-term injuries. The news that Per Mertesacker has suffered a serious knee injury in a friendly against Lens last Friday and is likely to be ruled out for five months is no surprise considering the squad’s record.

Everton are reportedly leading the race for the Portugal star

According to the Mirror, Everton face competition from Chelsea for midfielder William Carvalho.

The Blues are expected to be busy this summer, and it appears that a central midfielder is the top of Ronald Koeman’s wish list.

He has so far been frustrated in his search though, with a move Axel Witsel stalling on several occasions and him looking likely to end up elsewhere.

One man they have ben linked to is Portugal star Carvalho, who was one of the key players in their Euro 2016 success this summer.

According to the Mirror, the Blues are leading the race for his signature but are now facing competition from Chelsea for his signature.

Antonio Conte is determined to add another central midfielder to his squad despite securing N’Golo Kante from Leicester City.

He had been targeting Radja Nainggolan from Roma, but with a move for him proving difficult he has now decided to rival Everton for Carvalho.

Who he chooses remains to be seen, with both able to provide big wages but held back by not having Champions League football to offer.
