Zlatan Ibrahimovic dovetails with United captain in Rooney testimonial via The Guardian

• Manchester United 0-0 Everton
• José Mourinho refuses to speak about protracted pursuit of Pogba
It was Wayne Rooney’s night and so José Mourinho took a back seat for his first home game as Manchester United manager – arriving without fanfare, leaving without a press conference – but the other big name arrival at Old Trafford this summer made his presence felt on an otherwise tame testimonial against Everton. “I think every big player can work with other big players,” said Zlatan Ibrahimovic before kick-off. First impressions at Old Trafford suggest that was not simply another tribute to the United captain.

An immediate rapport between Ibrahimovic and Rooney was the most promising aspect of a United performance that showed the rigidity of the Louis Van Gaal era will not disappear at a stroke. The pair may have a combined age of 64 but their touch, quality and understanding was evident in United’s final outing before Sunday’s Community Shield against Leicester City. “I see no problems, only success,” Ibrahimovic had added. “I said many years ago the perfect partner for a striker is Wayne Rooney. He works not only for himself but for the striker and the whole team. I’m absolutely happy to be one of the guys beside him.”

Everton and Man United in Old Trafford stalemate

Everton and Manchester United played out a dour 0-0 draw in Wayne Rooney’s testimonial at Old Trafford.

Like all of Everton’s pre-season games this summer there were aspects of the display that will please Ronald Koeman, particularly defensively.

However, the squad still looks short of quality meaning new recruitments are essential before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

Koeman set out his side playing a 3-5-2 formation with Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines the wing-backs and young Mason Holgate joining John Stones and Ramiro Funes Mori in the centre.

After a quiet start it was Manchester United who had the first chance of the game but Maarten Stekelenberg was equal to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s shot

Romelu Lukaku’s blocked shot then fell to Ross Barkley in the area but his first-time side-footed effort was well pushed away by David De Gea.

Barkley then attempted to lead a three-man counter-attack but the England midfielder hesitated at the crucial moment and ended up slipping over as he tried to play in Gerard Deulofeu.

Luke Shaw, continuing his comeback from a broken leg, came close to opening the scoring when his long-range drive was deflected just wide.

Ibrahimovic then had a great opportunity to put United ahead when he broke free at the far post but his shot from a tight angle was smothered by Stekelenberg.

The best opportunity of the half fell to Lukaku moments before the break. Coleman’s dangerous cross from the right found Lukaku unmarked but his header flashed just wide with De Gea unmoved.

Kevin Mirallas came on at the start of the second half and had an early opportunity, blasting into the side netting from Lukaku’s knockdown.

At this point he was blissfully unaware of Roberto Martinez’s shock appointment as Belgium national team manager. I wonder who broke it to him.

Moments later the man-of-the-moment Rooney received a warm reception as he was replaced by Marcus Rashford.

Both sides made a host of substitutions on 65 minutes and the game predictably fragmented after that.

One of those subs, Bryan Oviedo, did well to prevent Marouane Fellaini from getting his head onto Memphis’ left wing cross.

There was a blow for Everton in the closing stages when Muhamed Besic pulled up with what looked like a knee injury and had to be replaced by Tom Davies.

Fellaini’s then had a header straight at Joel while at the other end Funes Mori couldn’t direct his header on target from Mirallas’ free kick.

The game then slowed still further to culminate in a timid finish, with the draw a fair result given the performances of the two sides.

Everton now have just one more pre-season game left ahead of the new campaign against Espanyol at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Former Everton boss Roberto Martinez is named manager of the Belgium National Team via Royal Blue Mersey

He takes control of Lukaku and Mirallas’ team.

Roberto Martinez has been named as the new head man of the Belgium national team, according to the team’s Twitter account. Martinez had formerly been in charge at Everton from May 23, 2013 until May 18, 2016.

Martinez joins the Red Devils after nearly three months out of work. In that time, he covered the Euros for ESPN and was linked with a return to the Premier League as the manager at Hull City. Instead, it appears he has decided to move onto the international stage.

Following a playing career as a defensive midfielder that saw him spend time with eight teams in 16 years, Martinez began his coaching career as the manager of Swansea City as a 34-year-old.

From there, he brought the Swans up from League One to the Championship before heading to Wigan Athletic for a few years. During his time there, he guided Wigan to an improbable FA Cup win over Manchester City, but also suffered relegation from the Premier League. Following that relegation season, he made the move to Everton.

With the Toffees, Martinez experienced great early success. On the backs of big loan moves for Romelu Lukaku, Gerard Deulofeu and Gareth Barry, Everton reached fifth place in England’s top flight in 2013/14 and a spot in the next season’s Europa League. That would prove to be the pinnacle of his time on Merseyside.

Despite some admirable Cup runs over the next two seasons, Martinez ultimately failed to bring Everton the trophies and type of success that seemed possible during his opening campaign. Both the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons ended with 11th-place finishes by teams that seemed unable to defend a lead and unwilling to make adjustments.

What resulted was a disgruntled fan base that demanded Martinez’s exit for half a season and a locker room full of players that seemed uninterested in playing for the Spanish coach any longer. His employment was terminated prior to Everton’s final home game of last season.

Martinez now takes over a Belgian team that has been somewhat of a disappointment in recent years. They are in the midst of what may be the most talented pool of players in their history, including the likes of Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois and others.

They are so good, in fact, that FIFA currently rates them as the second-best national team in the world behind only Lionel Messi’s Argentina. Despite this, they have reached only the quarterfinals of the most recent Euros and World Cup. The new manager will be expected to do better than that with the type of talent available to him.

Among that talented crop of players are current Everton men Lukaku and winger Kevin Mirallas as well as Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini, who Martinez sold to David Moyes in his first summer with the Blues.

Lukaku and Martinez owe much of one another’s success so far in their careers to each other. It was Martinez who originally brought the striker to Everton on loan and later made the move a permanent one. And it was Lukaku who scored a boatload of goals for his side in the three years Bobby was in control and it would be a good bet to say he is a big reason why Martinez has been given this job.

Mirallas, on the other hand, seemed to have a strained relationship with the coach. At times, Martinez preferred to go with more central players, such as Tom Cleverley or Arouna Kone, on the wing instead of the Belgian. This loss of playing time likely lead to Mirallas being left off the Belgian team for Euro 2016. It may be tough for him to make it back now.

It is a surprising move, to say the least. Martinez, at 43 years old, is still relatively young for a manager. His specialty seems to be offense, which Belgium don’t have a problem with, but their defense has struggled against what many would consider inferior competition.

However, few could argue that Belgium has a much more talented squad of players than any other team he has ever taken control of. Perhaps that will make a world of difference.

Unwanted striker has plenty of suitors on the continent via Royal Blue Mersey

Everton looking to offload Niasse onto some unsuspecting teams

Oumar Niasse has had a particularly undistinguished Everton career, and manager Ronald Koeman is looking to put the striker out of his misery with just 152 minutes of football under his belt.

The third most expensive player in Everton's history was signed for £13.5m in January from Lokomotiv Moscow but failed to make an impact on the side in the subsequent months.

Everton have been shopping the player quite openly, and the Senegal international has not been assigned a squad number for the upcoming season.

Now Sky Sports are claiming that up to four European teams are lining up for the player, which is to the Toffees’ benefit as they look to recoup as much of the money spent as possible.

German side Hamburg, Portuguese team Sporting Lisbon and a pair of Turkish clubs Besiktas and Fenerbahce have all expressed interest in Niasse who has been largely ignored by Koeman during Everton’s preseason. The forward played one half in a closed-doors friendly and hasn’t featured in any games since.

More to come as we hear it, but it’s looking like Niasse is very close to being gone.
