Holgate’s polished Man of the Match performance via Royal Blue Mersey
Results from the Player Grades Poll
Immediately after the game, we had asked you to vote on who you thought your Man of the Match was by grading all the Everton player performances. Here are the results from
Saturday’s poll with 434 people voting.
Youngster Mason Holgate had a stellar outing to pick up the RBM readers’ Man of the Match award. The defender had played well against Tottenham last weekend, but really stood out on Saturday, playing more of a conventional right back than the right sided central defender in a back three. He also topped off his afternoon with an assist on the winning goal.
On a day that there were plenty of very good Everton performances all over the pitch, it was Holgate who was the best with a 4.40 score. While still too soon, the comparisons with another Barnsley defender that Everton had plucked and then developed are becoming more and more apparent. That other player is known as John Stones and Everton converted the £3 million initial outlay on him to£47.5 million with add-ons in a sale to Manchester City.
Coming in second in the poll was ageless midfielder Gareth Barry, who also scored the winner with 4.19 points. Third was Kevin Mirallas, just off Barry, with 4.18
It’s no coincidence that both players are runners-up and scored too, with the goals just reward for their efforts. Barry was masterful as always, running the midfield and providing the link-up play that was often missing last season. Mirallas had an outstanding game in terms of effort expended. The Belgian winger was everywhere, charging up and down the field, closing in on defenders and then tracking back to support the defence in a way that Blues have not see in a while.
New signing Idrissa Gueye, who was an outstanding man of the match last weekend, wasn’t too far behind this week either, with another solid defensive performance. Playing with Gueye seems to have freed Barry up and the two seem to complement each other really well so far.
