Writer Prediction League: Everton vs Stoke via Royal Blue Mersey

The Toffees host the Potters, and our writers are feeling great about it

The writers here at Royal Blue Mersey may have started the season somewhat pessimistic, but optimism is now abounding after three solid matches to start the season.

Last week, each of our writers predicted that Everton would win both of its matches (though last week's post did not reflect that due to a clerical error) — and the Toffees came through for us, beating West Bromwich Albion 2-1 and Yeovil Town 4-0.

Here's a review of last week's picks, first those against West Brom:

Writer Opener MOTM Winner Score
Adam Kevin Mirallas Ross Barkley Everton 2-1
Brian Mirallas Romelu Lukaku Everton 2-1
Calvin Lukaku Barkley Everton 2-1
Darren Lukaku Idrissa Gueye Everton 3-1
Matt Barkley Maarten Stekelenburg Everton 3-1
Mike Lukaku Lukaku Everton 2-0
Ryan Lukaku Gueye Everton 2-1
Sean Lukaku Gueye Everton 2-0
Tom Lukaku Gueye Everton 2-0
Troy Aaron Lennon Barkley Everton 2-1
Tyler Mirallas Mirallas Everton 2-0

In a mystifying display of foresight, five RBM writers (Adam, Brian, Calvin, Ryan, and Troy) chose the correct winner and scoreline from this match, chalking up four points. However, none of us had a West Brom player scoring the opening goal, nor Mason Holgate as the RBM man of the match, so there were no additional points to be awarded there.

The mid-week EFL Cup match was equally kind to us:

Writer Opener MOTM Winner Scoreline
Adam Lennon Tom Davies Everton 3-1
Brian Barkley Brendan Galloway Everton 3-0
Calvin Yannick Bolasie Bolasie Everton 4-1
Darren Arouna Kone Mason Holgate Everton 2-0
Matt Davies Holgate Everton 2-0
Mike Lennon Bolasie Everton 3-0
Ryan Bolasie Williams Everton 4-0
Sean Deulofeu Bolasie Everton 4-0
Tom Deulofeu Davies Everton 3-0
Troy Deulofeu Ashley Williams Everton 3-1
Tyler Kone Davies Everton 3-1

Again, all our writers correctly picked Everton to win, and Mike and I both correctly picked Aaron Lennon as the scorer of the match's first goal.

Arouna Kone's late second goal stole two points from Brian, Mike, and Tom, who each picked a 3-0 scoreline, instead giving those points to Ryan and Sean, who each correctly guessed that Everton would win 4-0.

We did not have a man of the match poll this week (as you had to be inside Goodison Park to see the match!), so I will award Ross Barkley the RBM man of the match award, as he was chosen as Everton's best player at the end of the EvertonFC.com radio broadcast.

Given that four of us chose players that didn't even play at all, no one probably deserved any MOTM points anyway!

After two weeks and three matches, our leaderboard looks like this:

Writer Points
Darren 8
Tyler 8
Adam 7
Tom 7
Brian 6
Calvin 6
Ryan 6
Sean 6
Troy 6
Mike 5
Matt 4

Darren and Tyler have retained their hold on the lead, but my seven-point week and Tom's second consecutive week of three or more points have put us hot on the trail of the leaders.

On the other side of the leaderboard, Matt is bringing up the rear, as he's only accrued points by virtue of picking Everton correctly to win both of its matches last week.

This week, your favorite blogging team has once again proven their undying support for the Toffees (and perhaps their less than stellar judgment) by all choosing Everton to win this weekend against Stoke City.

Writer Opener MOTM Winner Scoreline
Adam Kevin Mirallas Gareth Barry Everton 1-0
Brian Romelu Lukaku Idrissa Gana Gueye Everton 2-1
Calvin Marko Arnautovic Gueye Everton 2-1
Darren Deulofeu Ashley Williams Everton 3-1
Matt Lukaku Mirallas Everton 2-0
Mike Lukaku Lukaku Everton 3-1
Ryan Ross Barkley Williams Everton 2-1
Sean Gerard Deulofeu Lukaku Everton 2-0
Tom Lukaku Lukaku Everton 3-0
Troy Lukaku Barkley Everton 1-0
Tyler Lukaku Gueye Everton 2-0
  • Our writers are still quite confident that Romelu Lukaku is poised to finally find a goal, with six of us picking him to score Everton's opener.
  • Lukaku and Gueye are the joint-top choices as Everton's man of the match for this match, with each having three votes.
  • Calvin is the only person who is predicting that Everton will fall behind before pulling out a victory, predicting Marko Arnautovic will open the scoring for Stoke City.

As always, let us know what you think of our picks in the comments, and feel free to submit your own as well! We're still waiting on our first six-point week of the season — it could be yours!

Everton 1-0 Stoke via GrandOldTeam

This afternoon we took on Stoke. To save me typing, here’s the team;

Firstly, thoughts go out to the fan in the Park End who took ill and required the services of medics.

Quite a slow start to this one, but once we finally woke up, midway in the first half, Ashley Williams had a header cleared off the line.

Following this, Everton turned the pressure on Stoke, and it was pressure that was kept up until half time, at which point the game was still tied at 0-0.

The first half had Kevin Mirallas looking like a totally different player from the one that stagnated like a puddle under a week old bin bag in the back yard during our three year Martinez sentence.

Should’ve been 3-0 up at this point.

On to the second half, Everton initially appeared to keep the pressure on with Barkley going close. A couple of moments later and, shock, horror, penalty to Everton! Baines stepped up to take and put us 1-0 up although it was not the clearest cut penalty as it went in off Given but they all count. Stoke hit the bar soon after.

Everton’s first substitution comes on 68′ with Kone replacing Mirallas. A bit of action from Stoke, then Funes Mori on for Barkley. With five minutes to go, Tom Davies replaces Bolasie and Barry gets a yellow card.

Everton win the game by one goal, but I he the feeling RoKoe will want to see us seeing games off better than this. But good play for large parts from the blues.

The post Everton 1-0 Stoke appeared first on GrandOldTeam.

Shay Given’s own goal gives dominant Everton victory over Stoke via The Guardian

When history repeats itself, it can be the consequence of an inability to learn the lessons it offers. For the second consecutive week, Stoke City failed to heed the new directives about grappling in the box. For a second successive Saturday, they conceded a spot kick that helped condemn them to defeat.

Leighton Baines’s penalty went in via a combination of the goalkeeper Shay Given and the post. The greater significance lay in its award, when Phil Bardsley shoved Ashley Williams. Last week Ryan Shawcross was penalised for grabbing Manchester City’s Nicolás Otamendi and Stoke’s handiwork has meant this is their worst start for six years.

Everton struggle to finish, but manage to beat Stoke 1-0 via Royal Blue Mersey

596255134.0.jpg

An own goal proved to be the difference

Everton always seemed to be a pass away from a brilliant goal, but it never came. Nonetheless, they earned a penalty and still managed to beat Stoke City 1-0 at Goodison Park on Saturday.

The one goal came in the 51st minute. Ashley Williams earned a penalty for Everton after he was tripped in the box by Phil Bardsley during a corner kick. Leighton Baines stepped up to take it. His initial shot was saved by Shay Given onto the post, but it bounced back towards the keeper and went into the net off of his head. It was unfortunate for Stoke, but a deserved goal and win for Everton

The Toffees dominated much of the game, keeping 55 percent of possession and taking 21 shots to Stoke’s eight. But the attackers were unable to finish all day long. There were too many missed chances to name here, but two players in particular were the biggest offenders.

Ross Barkley would work himself into good positions, but then pass when he should have shot or shoot when he should have passed. Again, Barkley’s decision-making comes under fire. And when he did shoot it would inexplicably go right at the keeper or wide of the target.

Romelu Lukaku, on the other hand, pretty much exclusively kept the ball for himself and it was to his detriment. And when his teammates gave him the ball, he would squander the opportunity. Lukaku had one chance cleared off the line and an another blocked about two yards from the goal. The positive side of this is that he is getting into good places and his hold-up play was brilliant again, but he needs to start scoring. Everton should have won by multiple goals, but instead it was a nail-biter finish.

Other than the poor finishing from the attack, there was a lot to like today. Idrissa Gueye continued to look fantastic in the middle of the park. His partnership with Gareth Barry will win Everton a lot of games this year. At the back, the veteran pair of Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka is as strong as you would expect. Between the sticks, Maarten Stekelenburg is assertive and decisive. I can’t even remember how many times he rose up in the box to jump above Stoke’s strikers to end an attack with a catch or punch. Do they still need a “first-choice” keeper? And Mason Holgate continues to impress.

At the end of the day, three points are three points. Going forward, I would expect Everton to become more clinical and win a game like this 3-0 or 4-1. However, last season, this would have been a draw or possibly a loss. That is a big deal and it now has the Blues with seven points from three games. Much was made of Everton’s soft schedule to begin the year, but they are taking advantage, which is what teams with European dreams do.

The players will now all go their separate ways for the upcoming international break. In two weeks time, they will meet back up at the Stadium of Light for a match-up with old boss David Moyes and Sunderland. Another fixture that should be three points, but the Black Cats can prove to be a tough nut to crack.
